I once had a very scary experience with Amtrak. At Norfolk Virginia I had to ride the North East Regional.the train ended up being like 3.45 hours late due to vandal damage and they had to get an ex conrail dash 9 for power and what would’ve been a 4 hour wait for the capitol limited ended up being no wait at all because we got there when they were boarding...but on the bright side we made it to Chicago all well and went to IRM and got a cab ride in 1630:). Great video mike!!

For anyone wondering, at 7:46 the lead locomotive on that Downeaster Consist is the decades old EMD F40PH used on mainly both long and short distance trains back in the 70's - 90's.

An interesting point about the halfway point that is where I am at, the Erie Railroad that was completed in 1851 and was at the time the longest railroad in the world, ended a few foot from what later became the half way point of the New York Central NY to Chicago Main Line

As a european this was very interesting to see. American trains look quite different from ours and have allot of character. The Talgo cars look just like the ones used on the spanish highspeed train Talgo. I didn´t know Siemens also made diesel locomotives.

Very enjoyable video of the various Amtrak corridors. I travel the Pacific Surfliner route between San Diego, Los Angeles & Oxnard when I’m home in the San Diego area. I alternate my visits between Los Angeles & Oxnard. I have no regrets at all about riding the Pacific Surfliners at all, it beats driving on what is becoming the I-5 parking lot in the San Diego North County & between the Los Angeles-Orange County Line & the I-605 San Gabriel Freeway is being rebuilt. It also beat driving the 101 parking lot as well.

I feel like the Keystone Corridor is Amtrak’s Miscellaneous Showcase route W/ Steam Engines. My reasoning behind that is because there is literally a clip of an Amtrak train with amfleet I and II cars and an ACS-64 was pulling some Superliner cars.

@kyotokid4
@kyotokid4 4 жыл бұрын
...the Hiawatha Line also was to employ Talgo units and be extended from Milwaukee to Madison ( the first leg of what would be an HSR line between Chicago and Minneapolis . Sadly the short sighted governor Wisconsin turned down the funding for the Milwaukee - Madison leg using flawed data for operating costs as the basis for nixing the project. Trains on the line were to operate at between 120 and 125 MPH and would likely have been pulled by Siemens Chargers. The current speed for Hiawatha service between Milwaukee and Chicago is the Amtrak "default" of 79 MPH. The line is also unique in that there is a station at the west end of KMKE airport free shuttle service to the airport terminal (there is also a reader board in the air terminal that displays train times). After the project was cancelled, Talgo closed it's assembly and maintnence shop (where two additional train sets for the Cascades line were built as well) and sued the state of Wisconsin for the cost of two trains that were already completed for the Hiawatha line. That equipment was later moved to Illinois and currently is in storage. Currently one train, the long distance Empire Builder (which operates between Chicago and Seattle/Portland) , provides the only service beyond Milwaukee to the Twin Cities.

I work in the railways in the UK I actually think, as a basic buisness plan, Amtrak are on the right sort of tack by focusing on local and intercity services. The ideal Amtrak set up would probably be Limited Long distance services, subsidised by federal government. With more frequent medium distance intercity trains that can out-compete airtravel regarding speed and convenience. Ideally you'd have heavy commuter services into large cities to boost your profits, but in the states those seem to be the bastion of local transit authorities.
