Here is a collection of Super 8mm sound movie clips I had taken at various places of AMTRAK E8's and E9's in action between 1976 and 1978. At the end, I added a couple of clips of some rebuilt Amtrak FL9's. Those where taken on VHS in 1996
. Thanks for watching, and hope you enjoyed it.

Michael Ventura it was definitely an awesome time to see a lot of power for those who got to see it in person but it was a rough time for the railroads, guess that’s why there was so many mergers happening at this time like, Chessie System, Family Lines, N&W and UP merger talks (which obviously fell through) N&W joining Chessie System Holdings (again obviously didn’t happen) and the Burlington Northern mergers

I remember back in the late 1970s(ca.1979)at stockyards(cincy.ohio) there was a WM SD40 dirty and faded . then they put it in the wash rack and brought it out. wow! for about 5 minutes when the engine was totally wet, the thing looked like it did when it was brand new, the paint was awesome! then the water evaporated, slowly,,,,,,, when dry, it didnt look much better, but those 5 minutes, I snapped several photos. It was a red/black SD40.

The Penn Central paint scheme looked good on those E8s. Amtrak put all the Es through a reconditioning program when they took over, but they're looking pretty worn, at this juncture. Read in Trains Magazine, long back, that Amtrak approached EMD about building more of the E units, but the carbody blueprint had been thrown away, which made costs for such a locomotive - an E10, so to speak - prohibitive.

For people who Don’t know, here is how to tell the difference between an EMD E unit, and an EMD F unit: First, look at the Number board. If the number board is squashed into the nose of the locomotive and has more rounded ends, then it’s an E unit. If the Number Boards are sticking out and have a more rectangular shape, then it’s an F unit. Second, look at the Number of wheels per Bogie and locomotive wheel arrangement. If it has a C-C (Co-Co) wheel arrangement, meaning 3 powers axels (6 powered wheels) per Bogie, and 6 powered axels (12 powered wheels) in total, then it’s an E unit, but if it’s a B-B (Bo-Bo) wheel arrangement, with only 2 Powerd Axels (4 powered wheels) per bogie, and 4 powered axels (8 powered wheels) in total, then it’s an F unit. Third, and Finally, look at the length of the locomotive. If it’s longer, it’s an E unit, if it’s shorter, it’s an F unit. PS, Don’t try to deduce E or F units by number of Nose lights, cause it can vary between one and two for both E and F units. And that, my friends, is how you Identify the difference between an E or F unit. And if you Already know this, then You’re welcome anyways.

trains 30-31, "national limited" transitioned to SDP40-Fs in the 1970s. Then PC/CR got a burr up the @SS regarding the dash(-2)trucks, which SDP40-Fs ran on. so, amtrak went back to E8-9s almost till the end when some F40-PHs showed up. remember, CR ordered SD40-2s with the older SD40 truck assemblies.

It’s a shame those beautiful locos were allowed to get so filthy. I wish they kept them cleaner.

The engineers don't wave from trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954.

@AmtrakGuy365 - I have a question. Where did streamliners like the ones at 1:05 fit in? Where those legitimate engines for people? And what did Amtrak do with them?

What was Penn Central doing with Amtrak?
@jad_n4454
@jad_n4454 4 жыл бұрын
Before amtrak got their own coaches and lockmotives, they mixed equipment from the railroads they absorbed. That's why you see Penn central equipment.
