One thing that will make the night better is bringing a pillow from home, as the ones provided by Amtrak are rather small and thin. A small blanket might also be good in the winter or if you get cold easily. The cars can get to 60° or so at night. If your trip is longer than one night, I would seriously consider upgrading to a roomette. One night in coach can be fine, but any more could be a bit much. Besides a bed to lay down in, you would also get all your meals paid for in the dining car.

@jacquelineshelagh No its not difficult to sleep on Amtrak. You're actually pretty comfortable especially if you get a room. It's an awesome experience.

I guess it depends on how easily you can sleep sitting up. Seats in coach are pretty roomy (much more leg room than in an airplane), but they don't recline very far and if you're in an aisle seat, there's no real good place to rest your head. If you travel during the off-peak periods, though, you can often get a row of two seats to yourself, and in such a case you can find a way to stretch your legs on both seats and rest your head on the window. That can be pretty pleasant. Continued...

I am planning to ride the Empire Builder soon, I am a little concerned about the way you say "most passengers are ATTEMPTING to sleep" is it difficult to sleep on the Amtrak?
