Wow...I hardly even recognize this spot as being Halethorpe except for the Francis Ave. bridge. Back in the 1960s and '70s when I would go train watching at Knecht Ave. crossing and Halethorpe, the only commuter train that I'd see in the afternoon was a Washington to Baltimore train made up of old, red PRR MP54 m.u. cars. They had a neat sounding hum to the motors when they started off on their way into Balto. The train would stop at a little waiting shelter at Halethorpe...that's all there was in the way of a station stop. There was also a lumber dealer where the commuter parking is located on the southwest corner of Francis and the NEC. I still have photos of GG1 powered trains, Metroliners, and that old lumber yard with boxcars spotted at their loading dock at Halethorpe. Thought there would never be an end of GG1s, E44s, Alcos, etc. back then. I could kick myself now for never having a camera with me to photograph the MP54 cars pulling into Halethorpe. :(

When my family first moved to Yale Heights in 1964 and I started exploring nearby rail lines, the Goodwill building was still a Western Auto distribution warehouse and received merchandise in boxcars. The switcher accessed their siding using the same switch off the main that serves Filbert's plant. It was kind of a switchback move heading south from Filbert's siding to the trailing switch for Western Auto. Always thought it would make an interesting model RR industrial arrangement. You're right, there used to be a lot industrial customers on both sides of the tracks in that area. Is there any freight traffic at all, other than the few local customers like Filbert's, on the NEC in the Balto. area? I haven't been up there since my folks passed away in the 1990s. They just happen to be buried at Loudon Park near the mainline and old Catonsville Branch ROW.

yep, i know that area well! i remember the opposite side had solo cup. i played down there when i was a kid - at that time, filberts was in use, but the track along the goodwill building was all overgrown. i never knew it had been a western auto warehouse! ive been back there only a few times in recent times. i think this is the last time i was down in that area. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3mbpGOMeNOVjdE i do have one from this year at knect ave, but its not very good, since there is a fence there now.

Thanks for the memory refresher! I remembered a cup company off of Coolidge Ave. but couldn't remember whether it was Solo or Maryland Cup. A friend of mine lived in Violetville and sometimes I'd catch a night switcher working Solo Cup on my way home from his house going the back way down Coolidge. That was in the early 1970s after I bought a car. Western Auto just received an occasional boxcar...never saw two at a time on their siding. I did see a gondola once spotted at Washington Aluminum on Parker Rd...only time I ever saw their siding used. I remember it was a Wabash gon. Solo Cup received a lot of Kansas City Southern boxcars. Sometimes there were too many for their siding and the extra cars would be spotted on the east siding just south of Knecht Ave. Thank you for the video link, and for posting so many train videos of the Baltimore area...really brings back train watching memories for me.
