My wife and I did this but we went from DC to San Francisco and it was life changing. Sleeper Car is a must. We brought a laptop filled with movies & tv shows, I brought my switch and ps4 with portable screen. That’s all we needed. Scenery was amazing, California was awesome, we spent a week and returned home. We will do this again. It’s expensive, but stress free unlike flying. Just bring your patience and enjoy.

@Keneshia Allah If you want to go to Oklahoma, you can book through the Amtrak website but you will have to switch onto a bus at some point on the final leg of the journey, because (as far as I know) Amtrak doesn’t offer rail service within Oklahoma atm. I took a trip to Oklahoma City from NYC years ago and if I remember correctly the train went as far Kansas, then we moved on to a bus for the final leg to Oklahoma City. Either way, I highly recommend it. Happy travels, Keneshia!

When I graduated nursing school, I celebrated by going across the country to Seattle via Amtrak. I was dirt poor at the time, so I went by coach, and all I had to eat was a loaf of bread and peanut butter. By the time I got to Seattle, it had been over 3 days since I had laid down, had a shower, or a hot meal. Sinking into the bed after arriving at the hotel was the most heavenly feeling in the world. I'll never do a trip that long in coach again, but I definitely don't regret doing it. The most beautiful scenery is in Glacier National Park (MT), New River Gorge (WV), and Colorado. The mountains in Northern California were gorgeous too. To quote Mulder from X-Files, "You haven't seen this country until you've seen it from a train."

Rail travel in the US isn't the greatest because 90% of the railroad network is privately owned by the freight train companies, and they give freight trains priority. So if you're on a tight schedule, maybe look at other options. But if you're on a vacation, then who cares, the slower the better, that's the best way to see the country, and you can see things that you either won't or can't see in a car/bus/plane
@spazzle

Casey Limbert Freight companies are required to give passenger trains priority under us law but they start their trains in front of them and they are slower so they get help up.
@caseylimbert266
@caseylimbert266 4 жыл бұрын
Which is how they "reverse engineer" (figure of speech) giving freight the priority... by screwing up passenger service, and making people want to seek alternate means of transportation, thus defunding AMTRAK... see what they did there? Because I guarentee there are a TON more freight trains than passenger, and they know where the passenger trains are and when they move, so they run the freight trains accordingly

In 1979 I was 13 and me and my family move from central California to Dubois Pennsylvania. We rode by Bus. It took us six days and seven nights. I remember stopping at all of the great cities along the way and a lot of beautiful scenery to take in. I remember this one dear sweet lady who was deaf and read lips. We communicated back and forth the whole trip! I remember both of us crying when we had to part ways. Then their was this strange lady who had a colored sponge setting on top of her head and changed it to a different color each time we entered a different state. Don't know what that was all about! Seeing things like big Skyscrapers in the big cities and the big Arch in St. Louis was amazing! One of the highlights was passing by Lake Michigan. I thought it was the ocean which I had never seen before! It was an experience I'll never forget!

yes but in America most people barely get one or two weeks vacation because they do not stand up to the big corporations who give all the money to stockholders and CEO! In Europe some people get 6-8 weeks vacation a year which is how it should be. Traveling by train is relaxing but you would have to come home the minute you get to Cali because of the limited vacation time.

Some things to consider: 1) When you book in advance, the times of departure and arrival may change. Always recheck within a couple of weeks of your trip. 2) Crews change at different points in the trip. This can result in the dining car closing. 3) It is not uncommon for dining cars to run out of some food and drink. Plan ahead by bringing some energy bars and water. 4) The trains sometimes run out of toilet paper. Bring sanitary wipes with you. 5) The door locks on roomettes are sometimes broken. Don’t leave valuables (wallet, phone, laptop, etc.) in your compartment as they can grow legs of their own. Locking your door is not a guarantee that your things can be left unattended. Don’t leave your passport there either. Carry your medications with you.

There was no direct train to that destination. I boarded an AMTRAK bus from Las Vegas to Bakersfield. Then an AMTRAK train from Bakersfield to Stockton, CA. Then another AMTRAK bus from Stockton to Elk Grove. It was more than 12 hours, but it was quite an experience and comfortable ride instead of driving. Booked the one-way economy ticket 4 months in advance and it was only around US$120. I will ride that train again if given another chance, perhaps after this worldwide health crisis of COVID-19.

Taking the train is one of the best ways to understand just how large the USA is. Planes don't count; you're strapped into a seat for a few hours and everything is the same distance from everything else. I hope that it's safe to travel next August, when I have plans to take the train from Emeryville (San Francisco) to Washington DC. It will be my fourth long-distance trip, as I've gone to Montreal, Detroit, and Chicago on previous trips. (The first two required transfers at Chicago, as do nearly all long-distance Amtrak trains.)

This brings back happy memories of me crisscrossing the USA with Amtrak in 2016. Your comment about the trains being late is correct. I had to spend a day in Kansas City due to a late train and a missed connection. Then I missed the connection in Albany for a local train to the town of Hudson. The guard on the train was so kind, he called the driver and then told me to stay on the train. That train was going through Hudson on its way to New York City and they made a special stop for me to get off. It was much to the amusement of the small number of people waiting at the station as they opened one of the doors, put out the small set of yellow steps and a tourist stepped off the train. Thank you Amtrak.

It's so so nice ... just sit back and take it all in. I've been fortunate enough to have traveled all the long distance routes across Amtrak's map. Compared to air travel, traveling by train is an entirely different experience. Both get you A-to-B, however train travel allows so much more enrichment to enter the picture. To begin with the relaxation one can experience on board a long distance train is unlike anything else. The motion of the train induces a wonderful baseline that all else is presented upon. Enjoying the scenery pass by in 360° while sitting in the lounge car is truly one of the most enjoyable and relaxing things in the world. Meeting fellow travelers is always a treat. When boarding and beginning a long distance route, it's fascinating slowly encountering the others on board because essentially you're all together for the next two to three days. Sleeping on the train is extraordinary, ... nothing like it. On board dining is interesting. Obviously it's not remotely a high end restaurant, but they do well in the modest kitchen from which they have to work. It’s not about the quality of the food, hell it's just cool that you've even got a dining option on board. Don't worry if the train is running somewhat late, it's quite common. On rails there's only one way thru, they'll get you there just don't sweat the delays. It's just wonderful, ... no hectic airport lines, no matter what, you're going to arrive at your destination and all you have to do is take it all in.

If you have the time, I would strongly recommend people do this at least once in their life. Maybe not all the across the US, as I think that may be a 3 day trip (although if you have the time and money, why not). But it certainly is a different experience. I would say though, if you are going to be on the train for overnight, it might be worth paying for the rommette. I took one train from Chicago to NYC and that was about 20 hours (left Chicago around 930pm CT) and arrived around 6pm the next day, and wish I had gotten a roomette instead of being cheap and paying $100 for a coach seat (I was traveling with someone else, and a roomette would have been $600 for both of us, each way). What really made the coach seat undesireable I guess was that the person behind us was on the phone pretty much throughout the night. If it wasn't for that person, the coach seat would have been tolerable but I wanted to sleep and maybe got 4 hours of sleep during the entire 20 hour ride. Yes you can fly, and if you're in a rush, and more concerned about getting there than the journey, then fly, but if you have time, and want to see parts of the country, this is a good way to do it. You can walk around versus a bus (which may be cheaper, but you can't really walk around). My only gripe is that out of the 5 last Amtrak train rides I can recall over the past few years, 4 of them were late by at least 30 minutes if not more (one was about an hour late getting back to Chicago from St. Louis).

Dylan, I did the L.A. to NYC roundtrip in 2017 with the Southwest Chief and Lakeshore Limited. The scenery alone is fabulous and worth the money, watching as it evolves from the magnificent desert Southwest to lushly forested upstate New York. But I did not sleep well at all in the roomette, with so much random jolting and jostling and noise from train motion. That got miserable! In between those train rides I did a pair of transatlantic sailings aboard Queen Mary 2, including one through a major storm with lots of ship motion, and on QM2 I slept very soundly. Go figure! This overall adventure took me from the central coast of California to Florence in Italy using only trains and a ship, no airplanes, just like my ancestors did in 1928.

Amtrak has been subsidized by the government forever. I'm sure there probably was a time it was sovereign and profitable, but hasn't been for quite a while. Pricing itself to be profitable is next to impossible with cheaper, faster, more reliable, more available air travel available. European countries are in the sweet spot for rail travel where the US is probably always going to be better served by air travel (until they price themselves out of the market in the way of fees and add on costs that drive up the actual cost you pay). Having said that, I've take the southwest chief no fewer than 20 times in my lifetime (and the Zephyr 2 or 3 times) and I've learned to enjoy it for what it is. When they finally added outlets to every seat (far too late, imho, but glad for it now), it gave us more options for things to do with our downtime. When I was much younger, your only options were the books you brought, or the few hours you laptop would give you before needing charged (by sharing an outlet in the club car). Now you can easily charge your phones and other handheld entertainment devices and be powered up for the entire trip. You can't blame the staff too much for what generally feels like tired ambivalence to outright abrupt rudeness, it's got to be a hard gig and travelers can be quite rude too. But I have found that if you go out of your way to be nice, courteous, and respectful, you can get it back to the staff you interact with. You will likely never get to where you are going on time, it's never happened once that I can recall in all the trips I've taken. But, if time isn't of the essence, it's a great way to see the US, without having to do the driving. Most cities don't let the rails pass through the nice neighborhoods or they passed through the city centers when those cities were newer, now, most of the time, you see the neglect of the areas around the old rail lines and it's a little sad. The reward is the beauty of all the varying geographies of the central US (in the case of the Southwest Chief). I think every person who enjoys travel even a little bit, should try the train at least twice... I can guarantee that it will not be luxurious, or easy, but it will be memorable.

Always loved trains. Took one long Amtrak trip six years ago, starting in Memphis (I flew there) on the City of New Orleans (just had to ride that train!), going to Chicago. Rather than taking the Southwest Chief, I decided to take the Empire Builder to Portland, Oregon, and the Coast Starlight back to Los Angeles (my home). What fun! The roomettes are tiny, but the beds are comfortable even for a 6' 3" fellow like me. Food was far better than I expected too. Do heed Dylan's warning, however. You will most likely not arrive at your destination on time. For me, I had planned a 3-hour layover in Portland - maybe get a massage while I waited. No way! By the time we made it to Spokane the train was more than 3 hours later already! Not to worry, Amtrak took eight of us passengers by bus down to Klamath Falls where we caught the Coast Starlight. By the way, the Coast Starlight still had its "parlor car" back then. What a shame it is no longer included on the route.

Then treat myself walking around exploring Chicago before the last haul to Buffalo. Amtrak knows it's stuff, they will get you to your destination (tho no guarantee on time), despite any acts of god. Met so many people while we enjoying the scenery. This gets me in the mood to do it again.

Several years ago my wife & I took our 10 year old son on a round trip from San Jose to Hartford and back on Amtrak. We traveled by Coach with 2 days on the train and then a couple of days in a hotel, and then back on the train. I will never do it again. Next time I will do the Roomette.

Thank you for showing your trip in the Amtrak Train. One thing I have always noticed when my Mother would always travel to L.A., she always had First Class ticket. She made sure that she had the shower in her room! She would always ask the Customer Service Agent to make sure that she would have that privacy in her First Class Sleeper Compartment for a shower. I have just always flown to the West Coast in Business Class. I have paid for First Class flying those long haul trips but Business Class is cool.

Seeing pen station and the swamp/marshy areas like in 2:50 is really surreal to me. Ive seen those areas most of my life so seeing them in a travel video hits close to home. This trip seems very relaxing and the views seem nice

Going by train = travelling Going by plane = getting from A to B Whatever camera or settings you were using on this trip Dylan were great, has a lovely sharp real life quality to it which looked different to some of your other videos? Sadly hitting cars is a far too common occurrence for trains in USA as the tracks are often sandwiched into urban areas with unacceptable levels of safety barriers / separation from the roads, or else the rail crossings are just not visible or secure to the level they should be (and are in most if Europe and RoW). I mean having such flimsey barriers to protect against the massive train and engines used in the USA - what could possibly go wrong! I would personally NEVER go cross country in coach, as it is just too painful after a while. I did the north east corridors from New York to Niagara and Vermont, Boston and Rhode Island - at one day travel they are all much shorter distances than X country, but even they left me in slight discomfort I have to say, and I am good physical condition. Pay the extra, get the benefit of a bed and shower if at all possible.

I agree! I'm using a GoPro Hero 7 Black in this video as i do with my others. It probably looks a bit better than the others as my lens cover was a lot less scratched up then (as this was recorded back in September) but I've ordered a new lens cover for after lockdown.

Some car drivers try to outrun the trains, i have seen a lot because our hospital is near the train tracks, they ignore the danger.

A few years ago I travelled from San Francisco to Vancouver BC using Amtrak trains. 3 days it took via Portland and Seattle. It cost me $178 coach class and to this day I think I got a bargain. Truly the best way to see the beauty of the USA. I've been to 38 States so far and once life gets back to some kinda normal, I hope to do many more train journeys. Thanks for your video.

The lateness is incredible. Not only did the Lake Shore Limited arrive in Chicago 3 hours late on my last trip, but I then had a 50-minute wait before the checked baggage came through to the baggage room. My connecting train had already begun loading when I finally got my bag! In future, I will plan any such trip with an overnight stop in Chicago. More costly, but a LOT less stressful!

Long time ago when I was 17 years old my mother and I traveled from Atlanta to New York on Amtrak in coach. The lights kept going out we were in the dark for about half the trip. But what made up for it is I met John Madden in the club car playing cards I happen to have a deck myself and I asked him to sign the Ace of Spades and he did. I would definitely take Amtrak again

I have problems with my ears so flying can be quite painful at times. I took the Southwest Chief from Fullerton, CA to Raton, New Mexico and then a bus from Raton to Denver, Colorado for my nephew’s wedding. I chose a Roomette both directions. The trip there was fabulous. The train was on time, the food was incredible and I had a great time talking with the Amtrak employee in charge of our car. The trip home was nothing like the trip out. Coming back they never checked my ticket or ID when I boarded or anytime during the trip. I could have been a terrorist or just a coach passenger who took advantage of an open roomette. We did not seem to have an employee attending to our car. Calls went unanswered and I missed dinner because I was never told which seating to go to. We had a medical emergency the first night and had to stop so a passenger could be taken by air to the nearest hospital. Then we missed our time slot so we had to wait for a freight to go through. After we got started again, we broke down and had to wait for the train to be fixed. I woke up a couple times in the middle of the night and we were in the same location. Third time I woke up, I discovered we had moved because of new scenery out the window but we were stopped again because we had missed our time slot again and had to wait for the freight train which had derailed. Once we got going again we then had to stop and wait for the train crew driving from Union Station in LA to us in Arizona because the current crew had worked their maximum allotted hours. When the new crew arrived and we were on our way, we didn’t have any further problems. I arrived back in Fullerton over 8 hours late. I wrote a letter to Amtrak about the disappointing experience. Not having my ticket or ID checked when boarding was my biggest concern. I never received a response.

Excellent video; and NO monotonous commentary, prattling on! LOVE it! A personal note: in my Amtrak travels whenever exceeding late schedules occur I fully recommend a WRITTEN letter to Amtrak CEO, PLUS letters to the freight companies (Union Pacific, and/or BNSF) telling of any displeasure at their (freight companies) expense.
