It's almost hard to believe that the F59's are all gone now. Seems like it was only yesterday that they were replacing the F40s on the San Diegans. Very enjoyable time capsule of a video that you will be able to look back at fondly years from now and remember a different point in time.

Actually, Amtrak only ever owned 21 F59PHI locomotives. 15 of them (450-464) were assigned to the Pacific Surfliner, while the other 6 (465-470) were assigned to the Cascades. 83 is the total number of F59PHIs that were produced; some of the ones which were not Amtrak-owned are still in the west.

They for sure made us proud! Farewell F59s *Thank you for your high speed services over the past 20 years!* We will really miss those F59s as they get transported to Metra, Chicago, IL. But I heard that the chargers are a good replacement because they are faster and have non-fouled K5LAs. I also heard that some parts of the Surfline will be increased from 90mph to 100 or 110mph. So the Chargers are just as good too. One last message for these F59s, "Hopefully you will be really powerful and able to handle the snowy metra railway!" Edit: 15:24 my favorite shot.

Obviously these locomotives I believe are getting not only to old, but some of them are being badly pollution. I seen some of these locomotives blowing black smoke at the top of their roofs, so with that that's never a good sign, and they would try to get more maintenance to fix them up. So they won't cause any more pollution ever again. So I think four years and years they've been trying to look for a company, that could build brand new passenger-only locomotives. That could have less maintenance to work on, and to be very clean without causing any pollution. I guess that's why all of these locomotives are finally going to be retired
@AVeryRandomPerson3 жыл бұрын
The black smoke is because of broken fuel injection systems. A mixture of fuel and air is supposed to be sent into the prime mover, but it can fail, and send only fuel, creating black smoke. They're not retired, they were just sent to Metra.

Unpopular opinion, I didn't like these and I think the chargers are an improvement.
@AmtrakandAWVRFan5 жыл бұрын
Thatguyontheinternet The chargers aren’t actually any better. The crews don’t like them because the cab is lower, the controls are more spread out, the windows are too big, the lavatories are small, the also break down, and the radio quality is very horrible just to name a few. While they do accelerate faster, quieter, and have strobe lights, there are more important factors that out-way the goods. If you like them, then I respect your opinion.
@thomaspalmer10195 жыл бұрын
@@AmtrakandAWVRFan I respect your opinion, but as far as I am concerned, these issues that you specified are the sort that you can expect with any new technology these days. I'm sure the crews (and railfans) will eventually get used to the Chargers.
@AVeryRandomPerson3 жыл бұрын
@@AmtrakandAWVRFan Now, they break down less, but still have the issues like a low cab.
