What drives me mad is that the design looks way different than the original concept posted by Alstom: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn2kqWmmg6lkmsk I mean take Siemens on the other hand. The aerodynamic profile of this Alstom train, in the shape of a duckbill, allows the train not to fly away at high speed, like a spoiler on a racing car. This duckbill shape is found on the Shinkanzen (bullet train in Japan). The TGVs in France do not have this duckbill profile, perhaps because they are old trains. It seems to me that each barrel of water represents a person of approximately 154 lbs (70kg) (I do not know the standards of the tests in the US).
@amtrak7064 жыл бұрын
The duck bill is for “aesthetics” not for downforce. These trains are extremely heavy and do not need additional aerodynamic down force, as any lift generated by the carbody is orders of magnitude lower than required to pose a problem. So TGVs being “older” (even though there are brand new ones out there with the same nose) has nothing to do with the design difference of the nose shape. That being said, whoever designed the “aesthetics” of the Avelia power cars was on some serious drugs because these things look ridiculous.

This might give up a better idea of how the related Horizon Trainsets will look. The Liberty is essentially the American version of aforementioned TGV successor
@PGHammer21A3 жыл бұрын
Because it is; the ONLY differences between the Horizon trainsets - which includes this one - are due to local regulation. In fact, due to Covid-19, Liberty will be the first Horizon trainset to launch - and this summer. (Like the others, it will be a staggered launch; Liberty and current Acela Express will overlap for at least a year due to phase-in/phase-out timetables - the same will be true for the other Horizon trainsets.) As far as this particular trainset goes; I suspect it will head to a museum - also this year - NOT revenue service. (The same applies to the first trainset - still at TTCI Pueblo for testing.)

@banksrail4 жыл бұрын
atom starfire productions There’s a difference between power cars and locomotives. Power cars are considered EMUs since they are connected as one train set. Locomotives can be swapped out and changed. There really isn’t much of a performance difference between Power cars and locomotives. Trains with motors on each bogie tend to have better acceleration.

Banks Rail yeah that was what I meant

Pendolino-family tilting trains? Noooo! I used to do Zurich-Geneva on SBB trains frequently, and I tried to avoid the tilting trains as they caused a lot of nausea. I was not the only one that avoided them. There is some research and experiments on how to better synchronize the tilting motion with the track curvature (mostly, start tilting the train *just before* the track starts curving by using GPS or track transponders instead of accelerometers), but as far as I understand, Alstom still did not incorporate that into Pendolino systems.
@thechickenstew37163 жыл бұрын
the NEC is pretty straight, so the train sets should not tilt that much. also at points where the NEC is curvy, the trains can’t go that quickly and will not need to tilt.
