I've gotten some insane steals with the Northeast Regional before. Some include $28 to Washington, DC and points in VA as well as Boston from New York, $17 to Philly, and others (this is from my student discount stacked with the lowest saver fare). Also this is great timing as I'm heading to DC on the SB Carolinian (basically a regional that travels to North Carolina and makes less stops) on Monday and I like hearing other perspectives on my favorite and most-used Amtrak service.

That they are! The third track from DC to Baltimore was upgraded to 125mph, so your higher speeds for longer durations was a direct byproduct of the infrastructure upgrades.

I'm gonna be moving down to Hampton Virginia for a new job soon, and I've been thinking about taking the train home to North Jersey for the hollidays instead of driving or flying. What would you guys recommend? Is it a better idea to take the Northeast Regional all the way from Newport News, VA to Newark Penn (~8 hr by train)? Or is it a better idea to drive to DC and take the Acela to Newark Penn instead (~3-4 hr driving, ~ 3 hr by train)?

advise against driving to or past Fredericksburg, as the I-95 backups between there and Woodbridge are guaranteed (outside of graveyard hours, ofc) if you can't make the 2 daily departure times from NPN, even taking a bus to Richmond, then Uber/Lyft to Staples Mill Rd (RVR) for the higher departure frequencies... would be much a better choice

It's the best way to travel in the Northeast US, but certainly not in the world. 200 mph would be incredible, but that would take some serious work before we could get there.

This is Amtrak. Absolutely nothing compared to the maglev super trains of Japan and china that travels at speeds of up to 375 pluss miles per hour. If they installed maglev super train technology in the northeast corridor, we're talking about boarding in Washington DC and being in your office in new york city in an hour or less. Try that in your beloved cars or on the slow and lethargic trains called Amtrak. You wanna talk about real trains? Highspeed bullet trains or better yet, maglev super train technology. But the mighty United States of America is so busy throwing money out into the universe. For exsample, America spent 200 billion dollars on the space shuttle program. Where's the shuttle now? Lets say the United States of America has that 200 billion dollars now. The maglev super train outfit can be purchased from Japan at 65 billion dollars for the northeast corridor. The line would begin in Washington DC and end in Boston stopping in Baltimore Philadelphia and New York city. Japan even offered to contribute 5 billion dollars towards the maglev project. When completed this maglev super train would travel at speeds of up to 375 pluss miles per hour. Again, board in Washington DC and be in your office in new york city in an hour or less. Now if the mighty United States of America was serious about fixing infrastructure, this would be more than well worth the investment. The system would serve everyone for decades to come but America wants to go to space where only a small few can benefit while everyone else still struggles to get around. America, what in the hell are you waiting for? Highspeed bullet trains !! Maglev super train technology, the new american dream..

Maglev is a gimmick, just like monorail. It requires its own dedicated track that can't be retrofitted to the existing rail system. High-speed rail on the other hand can integrate seamlessly into the existing US rail system. In fact, the northeast corridor already has a high speed rail system, the Acela. Not anywhere as fast as maglev, but a lot more versatile and therefore practical.
