Great ride, i'll be coming over to New York State in July to sample what Amtrak has to offer, this route will be on my list along with Albany to Chicago. I think this railway is ripe for infrastructure upgrade, we have diesel trains here in the UK that are doing 125mph, improve track geometry and switches on this route and release the potential benefits to the area served.

In some senses it is the only Amtrak intercity route and if those slow custom clearance border crossing issues, could be speeded really would be. After all it mainly transverses the old NYC main along the Hudson River route of the20C limited.The most famous train and in the last days of the NYC in 1965-6 the Central was no longer a passenger railway ( it's rival the Pennsylvania still was then at least for show and at unbelievable expense still was with its 125 Metroliners and still all sleeper luxury expresses like the Broadway limited ). Hower the NYC management did say the NY Buffalo and Chicago Detroit were the only viable non corridor routes in 1966 for passengers

I determined the speed will be around 120 or 140 kph in US, just like intercity through train in Hong Kong. But i love the average speed than enjoying the high speed train once i realised the original pre high speed train can be enjoying a trip view for a longer time. High Speed Train are somehow shortcut the enjoyable time there.

Nice to see it top 100 mph after Schenectady, but really dismaying to see how much it lumbers from the I-87 overpass (near SUNY Albany campus) to Albany - Renssellaer station. That's about 7.5 miles covered in 15 minutes, for a 30 mph average. That's where you hope they could really put some investment in to speed up that seciton. I know the Livingston Avenue Bridge is slated for replacement at some point. Hopefully they'll come up with an option that will raise speeds through there.

Amtrak doesn't own the track on this corridor. Thus does not maintain it... Freight railroads are happy with 45 MPH speed, and don't mind a bumpy ride...
@StevenJam8 жыл бұрын
Just wondering how do you record a video for so long? Space and Battery life are the main things, and do amfleets have outlets on the windows because I plan on recording my trip on the Chicago to Milwaukee trip soon.
@FanRailer8 жыл бұрын
Yes, all amtrak cars have outlets at each seat. Space is managed by the fact that I have a 64 gb iPhone 6, but when I do run out, I just shunt recordings onto my computer and delete them off the phone, all while continuing to record with the phone. Multi-tasking at its finest XD.

I saw your link to "full ride on train 64" and I was like "oh that probably means an edited version with the highlights - there's no way anyone would actually film and upload the full 10+ hour ride". But no, you really did mean a full 10-hour ride from Toronto to New York. Wow. Did you happen to note the speed between Toronto and Aldershot? The speed limit is 95 mph, but all the times I've taken Amtrak along that stretch it has only gotten up to 80 mph. Meanwhile VIA and GO do get up to the speed limit.
@FanRailer8 жыл бұрын
Well, the train is crewed by VIA rail while in Canadian territory, so idk what the deal is then haha. And yea lol, I don't label something as a "full ride" unless a vast majority of the trip is recorded. In this case, I did need to take a few breaks to eat and take a short nap, but that only cuts the time by about 3 hours.

How long was the wait at Niagara Falls, NY? And why the engine change at Rensselaer? Are the DMs unable to run past there for some reason? Cool fireworks :)
@FanRailer8 жыл бұрын
Niagara is usually between 60 - 90 min. Engine change at Rensselaer because most DMs only run between Albany and NYC. DMs can run anywhere the straight diesels can, but since the fleet is so small, they usually stay within that territory. They will run up to Niagara on the handful of Empire Corridor trains that make it up there, and on RARE occasion, they can and will run all the way to/from Toronto.
