Amtrak P42DC #81's K5LA - Quill vs Blast

How the difference of half tone vs full sounds on the horn...In this case with P42DC #81 it is night and day. I got a few roll-bys of it in recent months with some engineers using the full blast and some using the quill.
This particular horn has a wide range of sound. It's a nice sounding narrow font K5LA with all bells playing on the full blast... however not so pleasant sounding when only quilled.

Looks like the Southwest Chief is the last Amtrak long distance train to have the Genesis as their main power as the others have since been replaced by the ALC-42’s.

Unfortunately a few days ago #81 struck a boulder and got damaged to the piont where the couldn't lead the rest of the way to chicgo and amtrak has announced that any p42s that crash will be retired from.now on so i don't think 81 will.return to service

Nice set of catches of Amtrak 81. I caught 81 about 2 years ago on the Sunset Limited (Both E & WB) has a great K5LA.
