A very thoughtful summary of Neil Postman's fascinating and still timely book.

i didn't read the book but needed a summary and i'm glad i watched this video. it really helped me think about my daily activities and self reflect on the effects of me reducing social media consumption lately which resonate very well with ur words. Thank u and keep doing what u r doing. the views might be less but ur content quality is faboulous

ummm… any information about content of Postman’s Amusing ourselves to death? (beyond brief mention of its contrasting the attitudes to books/reading in 1984 and Brave New World)?

There is a massive contradiction in this video, now don't getting more wrong the problem identified in this video I believe to be genuine. However him trying to sell his method on solution really hurts his credibility in my mind

The way he referred to his courses looks like advertising. It somehow ruins the spirit of the book.

Why is there so much about social media in a summery about a book published in 1985??? something tells me Neil Postman didn't mention tiktok
@lkedves11 ай бұрын
He did not have to, just like Alan Kay did not need to have a tablet to invent it... in *1972.* Postman explained that building a business around being shallow and making money / power with it is dangerous because it starts a vicious cycle. Tiktok is just one round in that and he died earlier so did not have to see it. If you are somewhat interested, give a shot to Idiocracy first. Then you can learn from Postman why it did not take 500 years. 🙃

@@lkedves First, this video is called a summery not an analysis, so it's perfectly valid to ask why the first several minutes are discussing something that is not in the book at all. Arguably a topic that shouldn't be in the video, but at least not the first points used to explain the arguments in the book. Second, I've seen Idiocracy, it's argument is eugenics which is morally disgusting. And insinuating that we're already there doesn't actually engage with any modern sociology. We currently have the most educated population, book sales are up, people are using platforms like TikTok to share their knowledge, debate important issues, and learn from people different than them. Just because our modern world doesn't look like the past doesn't mean people are stupid.
