Clarification & update: note "vs family stories". My shock is due to feeling like I was made to miss out since no one EVER mentioned it. I don't even know one word. Grew up in the US with some ppl saying "you look somali" & paid it no mind. But now I can say "good guess. I actually found out I am!" Did some research & found out my maternal grandfather is from Gursum, Ethiopia (known for going back & forth as somali & oromo region). He died when I was born and so did knowledge of his roots since everyone was raised in Addis Ababa. But my maternal grandmother (with the Indian blood) is very close to me - stuck out because of how she looked - and told me stories for her father's family since I was very young (no need for shock/old news).

Magalee teenya: remember that: 1) Oromos & Somalis branched-out from the same ancestral tree that also included neighbouring 'Cushitic tribes' such as Afar, Sidama, Beja [Eritrea/Sudan/southern Egypt], and, 2) African political boundaries that separate say people in the Somali Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, etc, are all artificial. There is no such a thing as "an Ethiopian phenotype" or "Somali phenotype" as, for example, there are huge number of Somalis who ended-up in what became of Ethiopia & Kenya .. as there have been large number of Oromos who ended-up becoming part of Somalia [eg: Juba river valley Oromos in Southern Somalia], Kenya, etc. SONG/S: by a young & upcoming singer named Sakina [Borana/Gabra - Oromo, northern Kenya]. Your realizing that the borders on maps are "just drawn" is about the most important conclusion you can reach from these reports. Like you, so many people at first protest the ethnicities/countries listed in their genetic breakdowns - "I know I'm not German because my mother said we all came from Spain!" - but those countries are pretty recent and people moved around a lot over the centuries, with ethnolinguistic groups and regions being more significant for understanding our ancestry than the arbitrarily drawn countries that we have today.

The difference between Cushitic and Semitic groups isn't even that significance. If you want to go down the road of admixture all Horner's are technically admixed and have western Eurasian ancestry. Even Europeans, Asian, etc. are all mixed. It does not necessarily mean that they are mixed. It just means that the foundation of their ancestry were build that way. Skin color is not a good indicator at all. The Native Americans came from Asia so you may have ancestor from Asia that you and Native Americans share a common ancestor with so don't discount this. Broadly Northeast Africa will most likely be Egypt because I'm sure many Ethiopians would have been mingling in Egypt when it ruled as next door neighbors region wise and similar people. As for the Middle East, Cush (Ethiopia) did control parts of the Middle East according to the Torah or Bible and that would explain any ancient Middle East genes that are found in your DNA if not more recent Middle East genes from modern day Arabs.

Sis, you got a high amount of Somali dna, because the region of Harar, was dominated by Harla, and So,ali tribes before oromo migration after the adal sultanate wars of Ahmed gurey, so the region had harla and somalis who were close Muslim allies, intermixing, then oromos in the 1600s, expanded into the area and assimilated a lot of the ancient harla, and ancient somali tribes who lived in that area, look up the sultanate of ifat, adal kingdom, and adal sultanate..it shows fro, the 9th century till the 16th century, there were no oromos in the harar region and all of Eastern Ethiopia, the area was controlled by Somalis, and their very close allies, the Harla

Somali, Ethiopia, etc. is a nationality. It's not a race. There are no Ethiopian genes. These genetic test are arbitrarily labeling this or that DNA as Somali or Ethiopian based on frequency. That doesn't mean those genes are not all over the place. It just means that it's represented the *most* within this or that arbitrary border... _according to their particular "anecdotal" database._ If I remapped East African and changed the borders of Eritrea, Ethiopia, etc. then the labels might change to reflect that. That's why you have updates in the first place. One day they have my highest frequency in the Benin samples. But they get more Nigerian samples and realize X is more prevalent in Nigeria. Then My DNA changes from one arbitrary label to another. Utterly meaningless when you think about it. The only thing that is trustworthy is the fact that I'm majority West African. Pinpointing exact countries doesn't really mean much. Even with all the people they may have tested, that number is still less than 0.01% of the entire sub-Saharan population.
