The popular vocal siblings of Carnatic music Shanmukhapriya and Haripriya had their novitiate from their father Sri V. V. Subbharam who is a post graduate in music. They have also had the benefit of advanced training under the tutelage of the musical siblings of the previous era Kalaimamanis Radha and Jayalakshmi. They are now under the scholarly guidance of Sangita Kala Acharya Professor T. R. Subramaniam. Blessed with facile fluent voices, their synchronized singing with performances planned on a sound structure from the foundation to the ceiling, total involvement and absolute laya and shruthi control have elevated them to the top rungs in the sphere of South Indian music. Their repertoire in the genre of devotional music that includes many divine composers like Bhadrachala Ramadas, Annamacharya, and the Haridasas of Karnataka is remarkable and their musical expression has splendid bhakthi consciousness that has catapulted their popularity quotient to the maximum level. They have toured extensively all over India and abroad and are the recipients of many awards and titles among which ‘Isai Peroli’, ‘Nada Bhooshanam’, ‘Sangeetha sarada’ and the ‘Yugadi Puraskar’ are but a few. They have the honour of being the Asthana Vidhooshis of Sri Sringeri Sarada Peetam, Sringeri. They have released several cassettes and CDs that have found immediate appreciative response from music lovers and connoisseurs of the precious art form of Carnatic music.

The word Suprabhatham itself means Auspicious Morning and Raga Bowli -a Bakthi Rasa pradhana raga is chosen for tuning most of the Suprabathams. Listening to Raga Bowli in the dawn transforms the morning mood to be one of serenity and sacredness. Bowli calms the turbulent mind and promotes relaxation and prevents the effects of chronic stress, promotes emotional well being and maintains positive mental health to begin the day. Bowli has the following Arohana and Avarohana. Arohana: S R1 G3 P D1 S Avarohana: S N3 D1 P G3 R1 S (Shadjam, Shuddha Rishabham, Anthara Gandharam, Panchamam, Shuddha Dhaivatham, Kakali Nishadam). Note that the Arohanam of Bowli does not have the Nishadha (N) which is left out making it a nishaada-varjaya in the arohana scaling. Jiva/Amsa Swara : R , D (The note which reveals the melodic entity or the Swaroopa of the Raga; (Soul of the raga). To show the Swaroopa of the Raga in an Alapana or sangathi, this note is sung repeatedly, very often. This can be considered as the Main swara of the raga. There can be one or more Hamsa swaras in a raga.) Prayogas/Sancharas : GRGDP - PGPDSND - GPDSRS - PDSNDPGPDS-SRGRSND-PDRSNDP-GPDSNDP-GG PP GG DD- SSND-PDSNDPG-GPDPGRS. Prayogams of the type of “Janta”(dual swaras like GGPPDD) and “Datu”(skipping of a swara in between like GDPD DRSR ) lend great enchantment to the raga and make it very captivating. Bowli, a morning raga finds a natural place at the beginning of concerts. If I associate Raga Shanmukhapriya to Lord Subramanya, I will connect Raga Bowli to Lord Narayana. Raga Bowli immediately makes one think of Guruvayoour Suprabhatham by Smt.P.Leela and Sriman Narayan sung by M.S.Amma.

Ekkadi Manusha Janmam Ragam Bowli 15th Mela Janya Adi Talam Annamayya Krithi Understand that This song was written by Sri Annamacharya's son According to Prince Rama Varma disciple of BMK , Pedda Tirumalacharya But There are Contradictions This is one of those keerthanas, which is more a self-appraisal of life by Annamayya. The desolating tone set in this piece urges one to ponder on the purpose of human life. It is believed in Hinduism that the soul takes up "Human" life only after serving animal life forms. Animals do not have the discirmination of good/bad/choice etc. They go by instincts, and are only serving to satisfy one of the prominent desires attached to the soul. Human life is intended to work towards salvation/liberation (moksha) and the purposes are given by the four "purusharthas" : dharma-artha-kama-moksha. This keerthana has more dept to it than just the meaning it puts forth and a little complicated for me to explain it here. In this keerthana, the dejected Annamayya rhetorically asks as to what use is the Human life if one doesnot work towards the path of salvation and still is attached to the worldly illusions. The ragam is Revagupti which resembles Bhupalam and Bowli. Revagupti is a janya of Mayamalavagoula. He enumerates a number of mundane activities of people who forget the spiritual and eternal values. He wonders why people are in such a delusion (maya). P yekkaDi mAnusha janmam bettina phala mEmunnadi nikkamu ninnE nammiti nee chittam bikanu What is the use of this human birth? I truly believe in you only. It is left to your free will. I do not cling to the path of liberation. I would not even think of it. Oh Sri Venkatesa, you are seen as my inner self. You rule me smilingly. Why then, for me too this delusion? Bowli, a janya of 15th mela Mayamalavagowla, is a morning / purvodaya raga with a calm,pious and deep meditative quality. I think this is the main reason for choosing this particular raga for Suprabhathams. The word Suprabhatham itself means Auspicious Morning and Raga Bowli -a Bakthi Rasa pradhana raga is chosen for tuning most of the Suprabathams. Listening to Raga Bowli in the dawn transforms the morning mood to be one of serenity and sacredness. Bowli calms the turbulent mind and promotes relaxation and prevents the effects of chronic stress, promotes emotional well being and maintains positive mental health to begin the day. Bowli has the following Arohana and Avarohana. Arohana: S R1 G3 P D1 S Avarohana: S N3 D1 P G3 R1 S (Shadjam, Shuddha Rishabham, Anthara Gandharam, Panchamam, Shuddha Dhaivatham, Kakali Nishadam). Note that the Arohanam of Bowli does not have the Nishadha (N) which is left out making it a nishaada-varjaya in the arohana scaling. Jiva/Amsa Swara : R , D (The note which reveals the melodic entity or the Swaroopa of the Raga; (Soul of the raga). To show the Swaroopa of the Raga in an Alapana or sangathi, this note is sung repeatedly, very often. This can be considered as the Main swara of the raga. There can be one or more Hamsa swaras in a raga.) Prayogas/Sancharas : GRGDP - PGPDSND - GPDSRS - PDSNDPGPDS-SRGRSND-PDRSNDP-GPDSNDP-GG PP GG DD- SSND-PDSNDPG-GPDPGRS. Prayogams of the type of “Janta”(dual swaras like GGPPDD) and “Datu”(skipping of a swara in between like GDPD DRSR ) lend great enchantment to the raga and make it very captivating. Bowli, a morning raga finds a natural place at the beginning of concerts. If I associate Raga Shanmukhapriya to Lord Subramanya, I will connect Raga Bowli to Lord Narayana. Raga Bowli immediately makes one think of Guruvayoour Suprabhatham by Smt.P.Leela and Sriman Narayan sung by M.S.Amma.
