I view MLP as a simple, down to earth show. In season 1, we had a ton of great relatable slice of life episodes, that (regardless of how bad they were from an analysis standpoint) would always make me smile. And even after the sudden realization of bronies, MLP still has that charm that had it back back in season 1. Whenever I sit down to watch a new episode, I don't think about anything. If I notice a plothole of the first watch, I simply ignore it. If I find a character unlikable, I shrug it off. Of course, the analytical points always come up on the second watch, but on the first one, I just sit down and watch the show for what it is. A cute, charming, funny, well animated show about pastel colored horses. However, there is one thing I love about MLP that I will always see this show as. An escape from real life. Whenever I watch an episode, no matter how bad I find it, I will always leave with a happy thought. I believe its the fact that in the world of Equestria, no one really cares who or what you are, they accept you. The same goes for the brony fandom. It shows that no matter how many jerks there are in the world, there will always be people like the ponies in Equestria. And I think, in the end, that is what I view this show as. An escape from real life, an example of what life would be like if everyone could be just have a little more love and tolerance.

Perplexing talk you guys. I think that being an analyst us both a good and thing in the perspective viewing of a show, and heres how....... Good: analysis allows us to get a good lock at what goes into a show, and what small tidbits go into the writing, drawing, humor, execution, etc., and allow us to appreciate all the fun things and ideas that are incorporated into each episode. Its also good to give praise into what they really do well and to give good, upstanding, morally DECENT crticism on what they could've done better. Bad: Analyzing can take the fun out of watching a show, we may also go into a tangent on what was done horribly, what didnt make sense, which characters were either not in character or just "flanderized", what scenes didnt make sense, etc., and our criticism may discourage others from either reviewing that show, or watching ot altogether. Either way, we should all just take the good and bad of analyzing things in stride, and roll with them. Hope that helps Dr.Wolf and Aeon, and nice Fluttershy pic in the background Dr.Wolf, it totally caught my attention!!!!

i love analyzing MLP, (if you can call what i am doing analysis), because i when watch it a second time , it's with a completely different mind-set. i can watch an episode completely serious and nit-picky while taking notes, and immediately watch another one purely for entertainment. i treat analysis as sort of a mind-puzzle, to spot and connect the different hidden points, and i keep analysis apart from normal viewing. that way, it is very easy to enjoy the show for a second time while being in a analytic mind-set, even immediately after watching it for pure entertainment.
@DoodleDabble10 жыл бұрын
For me, if I never got into analysis, I wouldn't be a brony today. It opened up a whole new world to me and deepened my appreciation of the show. However, after a while, especially when the ones I watched got so overly critical, I became critical as well. I noticed after a while of watching critique videos, MLP or not cuz I was watching non MLP reviews before, I became much more critical in my mindset. I think as long as we keep looking at the good alongside the bad rather than just the bad, we will be able to appreciate the objective and enjoyment quality of the show. My biggest example is Canterlot Wedding- yeah the writers brought it out of left field, but wasn't it just beautiful? Notice when something is wrong, as finding what people do wrong can improve how you produce art, but also enjoy what is enjoyable. Also, reviewing is fun ^_^
@Th30neiromancer10 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I am not dissing the analysis community, I am very happy I became an analyst. Though if it means anything I was merely entertaining the idea rather than experiencing it. In the video I brought up the idea of "it's real" vs "It's not real but still fun" (not that real and fun don't mix, but you get that), another idea to play with is that there are times where you may have logic based problems with something but still love it emotionally.
@DoodleDabble10 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on that. Literature is just as emotional as it is logical, and both must be taken into account in analysis. And we can love something whether it's great or sucks lol

I believe it goes both ways. When somebody points out an aspect of an episode you didn't realize at first, it can either enhance (if it was good) or destroy (if it was bad) your enjoyment of the episode the second time around.

I tend to analyze myself, and I do it rather passionately. The reason why I do that is because I get to find some hidden messages and meanings, as well as seeing a bigger picture. Sometimes things do end up bad, but other times, I see a gold mine. It doesn't worsen my opinion on Friendship is Magic, as it actually raises it.
@QuickenFixen10 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Very interesting. I've been wondering about this for a while myself now. I've seen a few brony analysts that seem to, over time, not only lose interest in the show, but even become more cynical in their complaints or criticisms. It seems like after spending so much time looking deeply into things, they lose the ability to enjoy the show for what it is: a cartoon. Personally, I've don't actively think much while watching cartoons, or even most TV. I'm usually just absorbed in the world crafted by the animation and storytelling. Honestly, I haven't even come across an episode that I've disliked. And I've certainly never thought to myself while watching an episode "Man. This really isn't fun to watch." But it seems like some analysts do think that kind of thing. Anyway, it's nice to know you still enjoy MLP, Dr. Wolf, and that your analysis helps you to find more things to appreciate. Gives me hope, and it's one of the reasons your analysis videos are still fun to watch. Because, really, when someone is constantly harping on a bunch of things that made them really hate an episode, it kind of puts you in a sour mood if you enjoyed that episode, you know?

MLP Analysis is simply the detailed examination of aspects of an MLP media. It all depends on personal preference, somebrony are happier just watching the show on the surface & pass off any deeper meanings, while others are happier to find such things in the episodes. In other words, if it deepens your enjoyment, I say go for it. It's true by analyzing, we will find hidden flaws as well as gems in each episode, but personally, my astonishment at finding those gems far surpass my shock at finding flaws, So I do it. If you're afraid your enjoyment will disappear if you analyze, think carefully before you decide to do or not to do it. Truth is, the MLP Analysis community is a big reason on why I enjoy being a brony so much. If my UN didn't clue you in, I'm someone who likes to think deep & far A LOT. So finding a great cartoon series with an expansive analysis community really makes me happy & glad to be a part of it.

I have noticed this among the other analysts of this show, that they are starting to lose interest in it. I think that is a danger when you devote so much energy to analyzing a single franchise/story. A sort of combination of "the thing I thought was good but it's not anymore" and "familiarity breeds contempt". That and I personally see the show's standing as "a unique one" is not helping in the matter. It is good to see the other analysts have started looking at other things, whether to fill in the gap until next season or who have happily moved on from the show.
@Th30neiromancer10 жыл бұрын
Indeed, I have seen it in some other analysts, but luckily they are appear to be in a small minority based on my experiences in the Rift Cafe. I am personally not getting bored with the show but it was those few people that inspired me to think of this subject.

***** Indeed, it is a interesting thing to reflect on, especially when looking at fandoms that experience a "calm down" (usually occurs during the wait of the next installment or when the series ends). Though I do think the backlash that these "losing-interest/negative" analysts have been given by the rest is a bit excessive and mean spirited, especially with the Season 4 finale (not helped when the defenders of the analysts became equally nasty). It actually got so bad, from my perspective at least, that I felt like turning my back on the fandom; I was so disgusted by the behavior. Fortunately it died down and things have more or less return to normal . . . I hope . . . hmm, this post is very much a downer. Better lighten the mood. *explosion of butterflies from nowhere*

I wonder this myself. Is thinking over everything in this show ruining my enjoyment of it? When I was younger I didn't care about the controversial topics, or didn't even know analyzing a show was a thing, so I don't have as many bad memories of a show as much as I do watching one today.

Well, everybody is different. To some analyzing the show gives them a deeper understanding of the characters and their interactions, thereby more enjoyment. To others it detracts because it picks apart the painting so to say. Here's an example. I show you the Mona Lisa. You might see a beautiful painting made with passion and an eye for detail. On the other hand, you could also look so deeply at the painting that you begin to study the chemical makeup of the paint and canvas itself and thereby miss out on the beauty of the painting as a whole. I don't mean that this is a bad thing though. If you like seeing how the different paints were made and thereby how they interacted, you work up a deeper understanding about how the painting was conceived. Another example is in literature. You could read a satire and enjoy it for what it is, or you could research about the era that it was written and make connections with the events in the book opposed to real life. In this way you have a deeper understanding of what the author is trying to say. However, if you take it too far and over-analyze the plot, you could loose the enjoyment of the characters' interactions. Simply put, everybody is different. To each their own. If you enjoy the show for what it is, by all means, please feel free! If you enjoy looking for the subtle contexts, please help yourself! :)

I've been a fan of friendship is magic since episode 1 aired. I've seen dozens of fan projects, and I've seen the analysis community within the fandom grow since its conception. That said, just because I enjoy something doesn't mean I can't look at it critically. Every show has problems, whether in a social sense or in a bad-writing sense. The only time I ever stop enjoying a show is if it begins being so problematic that I end up dropping the whole thing. Or the flaws start becoming way too big to "just ignore". It's why I stopped watching Legend of Korra sometime during Book 2.
@primroan535410 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised you even got that far. I stopped after season 1 aired. They really dropped the ball on that series. I just can't stand Korra as a main character.

I don't know if this would help, but sometimes when I'm stuck on a story, I will put it aside and I will either write a new one or work on another, just to clear my thoughts a bit from it and then go back to addressing the issue in the story with a relatively fresh mind to it. Or is there a more specific issue within your work that your dealing with?

I see the Brony Analysis as fans with opinions and what they think. Every time I watch a video on yours or anyone of the analysis, I usually like to hear others opinions on an episode, a headcannon theory or the show itself. Their may be some opinions I agree or disagree, but that's what they think and I'm not one to judge.

DR. WOLF! PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME! I'm facing a really big problem... Okay, maybe it's not that bad but in a way it is. So recently I found a really amazing artist known as Kilala97 on devaintart. I was so inspired that I decided to draw one of her characters and she ended up putting MY drawing on HER home page! I was blown away as I look up to her as an artist and want to be as good as her. So I was obviously very excited but then people started coming to my page and began praising it as well. I was so happy but then I began to worry. I almost felt self conscious of my other works as more and more people were observing them. So this is where my problem comes into play. Now, I look at my art in a new light and I am now in a constant fear that my art may not add up to other works I've done. I think you may have struggled with this same problem doctor so please. What do I do? (Sorry if some of this sounded like me bragging for that was not my intention)

I disagree with the point that to analyse, you have to view the show with a dispassionate or superinquisitive mindset. I got used to thinking about why I like the things I like, and that's the opposite of watching as someone who's not passionate. Because I want to find out what makes the show entertaining, I can _only_ do it by being passionate. The dispassionate PoV is actually used for finding plotholes and nitpicks. Like Nostalgia Critic explains in his video about nitpicking (youtube it, it's awesome), entertainment is an illusion, and a viewer who's engaged should not notice or not care about plotholes and minor problems. So if you try and watch something from a dispassionate PoV, you _will_ find plotholes people usually miss, but I don't consider that analysis. Because pointing out plotholes by itself is not evaluating something, it's skipping over what entertainment is and easily misrepresenting the product. MrEnter's video on Twilight's Kingdom also complements NC's, by saying succintly how to handle that in analysis: "if you've asked why to something that an episode presents, you have to ask why does it matter." Although regardless of being passionate or dispassionate, it's true that thinking more about the show will inevitably make you see problems you didn't see before. But for me, that often gives me a perspective on how small these problems are when compared to the good stuff, or the things writers struggle with. Writers don't do perfect jobs, so if you're going to find the imperfections, it can be educational to also think about why they're there, or at least how it impacts enjoyment. At least that's how I stop myself from dwelling on negatives.
