AMX-30B2 MBT-Operation Desert Storm

The French participation in the Gulf War, codenamed Opération Daguet, saw the deployment of the 6e Division Légère Blindée ("6th Light Armored Division"), referred to for the duration of the conflict as the Division Daguet. Most of its armored component was provided by the AMX-10RCs of the cavalry reconnaissance regiments, but a heavy armored unit, the 4e Régiment de Dragons ("4th Dragoon Regiment") was also sent to the region with a complement of 44 AMX-30B2s. Experimentally, a new regimental organisational structure was used, with three squadrons of thirteen tanks, a command tank and six reserve vehicles, instead of the then normal strength of 52 units. Also six older AMX-30Bs were deployed, fitted with Soviet mine rollers provided by Germany from East German stocks, and named AMX 30 Demin. The vehicles were all manned by professional crews, without conscripts. The Daguet Division was positioned to the West of Coalition forces, to protect the right flank of the U.S. XVIII Airborne Corps. This disposition gave the French commander greater autonomy, and also lessened the likelihood of encountering Iraqi T-72s, which were superior both to the AMX-10RCs and the AMX-30B2s. With the beginning of the ground offensive of 24 February 1991, French forces moved to attack its first target, "Objective Rochambeau", that was defended by a brigade from the Iraqi 45th Infantry Division. A raid by Gazelle helicopters paved the way for an attack by the 4e Régiment de Dragons. Demoralized by heavy coalition bombardments, the Iraqi defenders rapidly surrendered. The following day, the 4e Dragons moved on to their next objective, "Chambord", where they reported destroying ten tanks, three BMPs, fifteen trucks and five mortars with the assistance of USAF A-10s, and capturing numerous prisoners. The final objective was the As-Salman air base ("Objective White"), that was reported captured by 18:15, after a multi-pronged attack, with the 4e Dragons attacking from the South. In all, the AMX-30s fired 270 main gun rounds in anger.

An experimental round was developed for the AMX-30. It featured a HESH round comprised of Semi-Edible Brioche dough that was a very efficient explosive. Just 2 grams was enough to destroy the frontal armour of a T-72.

However it stillo had very good firepower and firing control system that applied firing corrections automatically once the target had been lazed and tracked for a second, it also feature a good thermal imaging system. It fared extremely against modernized Irakis T55's and T62's.

J'ai servi quelques années sur AMX 30B... sa manoeuvrabilité était trés bonne mais il a été conçu pour combattre en Centre-europe contre les chars russes dans les années 60... en 1991, il était dépassé mais pas tant que cela, avec les derniers AMX 30B2 Brennus équipés de surblindage, d'une nouvelle motorisation et surtout de la toute dernière COSTAC... je rappelle que les M60 servaient encore dans plusieurs armées, il était encore plus vieux, plus dépassé, moins manoeuvrable, un canon moins efficace et pourtant du même calibre et surtout bien trop haut... La COSTAC a a été un plus permettant d'avoir une précieuse expérience pour le Leclerc... Enfin, les Russes avaient encore des T54 et des T55 bien moins performants et en plus grands nombre que les T72 et T80 (d'ailleurs, ce dernier était un échec, nécessitant de revaloriser des T72 en T90). c'est un peu comme critiquer les MS406 en 1940 : ils étaient pourris mais ils ont infligé plus de défaites au BF 109 que l'inverse (en l'air car une grande partie de l'armée de l'air a été détruite au sol)... Le pilote français de 1940 était trés bon et trés courageux mais se battant à un contre 5 voire 6, il ont fait ce qu'ils ont pu. Le D520 était trés bon, mais sorti en trop petit nombre comme le MB152. Le matériel ne fait pas tout, l'entrainement, les qualités de ceux qui l'utilisent ont toujours une importance. les T72 irakiens de même que leurs T64 étaient bien supérieurs sur le papier, mais ils étaient servis par des équipages non entraînés et plus ou moins démoralisés. Le F22 raptor, sur le papier, c'est bien supérieur au rafale, mais à red flag, c'est match nul 5 fois et une victoire pour le rafale...

The OFL 105 F1 fired by the AMX 30 could virtually penetrate Iraquis T72 and T62 up to 5000 meters on the hull as well as turret for the T62. T72 turret was more resilient but could still be penetrated within 1500 meters by the OFL 105 F1

Despite the fact the french AMX 30B2 was outdated in the 90's, it faced some T72 and destroyed them. The capacity of the tank is a thing, but it doesn't replace the experience and the training of a the crew. French crew were very efficient, trained far more regularly than irakish one. Also, the french 105 mm gun was one of the best (if not the best) of its category. German have always regretted to not finish the "common tank" with french for a a single reason : the french cannon and its ammunitions were far far better than the other NATO 105 mm. The french gun was far more efficient at long range. That explained he was able to destroy some AMX 72. The weakness of the AMX30 serie has always been the too thin armour, not the gun nor the crew.

Totally right, the french AMX30B2 faced some T72, more modern and reputed stronger... Despite that, they destroyed them. The crew experience and their acess to great training camp can make and do the difference. The french 105 mm gun was one of the best of this calibre, very efficient at long range too. The last version of the 105 mm "obus flèche" was terrific against so(called far superior tank.

@@LeSoleilRoyalXIV I don't think so, the T72 gunnery was more than on par with the french AMX 30... The russian cannon was bigger caliber and longer, and was able to fire AT missile too. Then the range was not an imporant element. The french gun may have been better for other reasons (the french ammunition faster and performing better maybe). The difficulty of the T72 is the space inside, they are very "unconfortable", you're not in good position when inside. There were few T72 destroyed by the French compared to the other allies, not because they did avoid the fight with T72 but because of the strategy and the position of the french light armoured divsion which was at the extreme area of the allies line wh=ith the mission to outflank the irakish troops to finish in a vast encirclement and close the gap to the border in the north. French division did the longest distance and faster. The AMX 30 is clearly not an heavy tank in the mind of the ones who knows about tanks; but a medium one with a very good gunnery (105mm + 20 mm coaxial machin cannon). It was a true fast tanks which jobs was not to make a strong point of fight with heavy russian tanks but breakthrough, move fast, outflank and fire fast then move... not doing a muddy batte armour against armour. The thin armour of the AMX 30 was his weakness (one hit and dead) and his strength (lighter then faster and not easy to hit then).

They are also still in service in a handfull of countries, and were only retired from french service completely in the mid 2010s. Theres nothing inherrently wrong with them. They're just old.

l'opération Daguet n'a opposée que des vieux T-54 (années 50) Irakiens aux Français, la réalité c'est que l'AMX30B2 (années 70) était obsolète contre les T-72 (années 80) et que l'OTAN n'a pas voulu faire courir de risque inutile aux Français, l'opération était concentré sur la partie la moins bien protégée du dispositif Irakien. LA plupart des T-72 possédaient un glassis réactif qui diminuait l'éfficaité a longue portée du canon F1, l'AMX ne disposait lui d'aucun blindage antichar. Il faut rappeler qu'a l'époque le Leclerc était sensé déjà être en service (prévu pour 1991 premier livré en 1993)

C'était des T55 and T62 "modernisés" restrospectivement, l'OTAN a fait tout un foin de la soi-disante surpuissante armée de Saddam mais en réalité, elle était surtout faite de bric et de broc. les AMX 30B2 Français auraient très bien pu faire face aux T72 irakiens, qui n'avaient tout simplement pas de système d'imagerie thermique ni de conduite de tir numérisée (aucun M1A1 n'a été touché par un T72, certains équipages d'abrams se demandaient même si les chars étaient occupés car très peu ont réagi, il s'est avéré que quasimment tous étaient en ordre de combat mais complètement aveugle en réalisté)L'obus utilisé par l'AMX 30 B2 lors de Daguet était l'OFL 105 F1, il pouvait percer le blindage d'un T72 à 3000 mètres de distance.

Alors déjà le standard B2 date de 1982 pour, puis de toute manière l'AMX 30B2 à un électronique surpassant de très loin n'importe quelle char Irakien auquel il aurait pu faire face, donc en résumé il peut facilement repairer de bien plus loin un char irakien que lui le peut, admettons qu'un char irakien et repairer un AMX 30, le temps qu'il estime la distance l'AMX 30 aura déjà le canon pointé sur lui avec la hausse du canon déjà réglé du fait de sa conduite de tire COTAC qui permet de calculer automatiquement un solution de tire à l'arrêt en prenant en compte diverse paramètre, Alors qu'un T72 irakien lui ne peut que télémètrer laser et ensuite réglé la hausse manuellement en plus de ne pas avoir de caméra thermique , et un T55 ou T62 estime la distance avec une courbe présente sur le viseur, donc rien de bien précis, et admettons que ce sois des version modernisé avec un télémètre laser bas ça serait au niveau tu T72.

Pour en parler il faudrait avoir vu les chars soviétiques de l'époque...dont les cannons n'ont jamais eu la précision suffisante à allonge identique. Et je ne parle pas de la conduite de tir ni du système de chargement "automatique" catastrophique du T80 ( qui obligeait e chef de char à charger les charges manuellement pour avoir un temps de chargement "décent"...vu sur ceux des Ukrainiens). Bref, équipages entrainés ou pas, les chars "soviétiques" eux n'auraient pas fait long feux.

@@Sewertheonlyone Aucun Leclerc n'a été détruit au Yemen. Tu racontes vraiment n'importe quoi. Un seul a été touché par un 9M113 juste au dessous de l'episcope du conducteur la ou le blindage est plus fin le tuant sur le coup et arrachant au passage une jambe au chef de char. Le char n'a subi aucun dommage majeur et repartait au combat le lendemain. Et pour ce qui est de de la présence de T34 à certains endroits du globe, compare simplement le nombres d'unités produites pour chaque modèle ainsi que le nombre d'utilisateur... Concernant le commentaire initialement posté, les Soviétiques étaient effectivement en retard sur l'occident concernant les systèmes de conduites de tir pendant les années 80. Ils ont maintenant largement rattrapés leur retard.

L'histoire du chargement automatique me fait bien rire... En dehors des défauts de jeunesse, ils ont toujours été tres fiables et remarquablement constants. Ceux des T-64 et 80 etant plus rapide que ceux des T-72. Un exemple concret : interview de tankiste syrien récemment, ou ils parlent de l’excellente robustesse et fiabilité du T-72 (pour info des T-72M de base vieux de 30ans au moins), malgré une atmosphere saturée de poussiere, et des combats intense, il parlait de 300 obus déja tiré,

Ses munitions, perçant grand max 400mm ne peuvent rien contre un T-72M1,A,B ni meme contre un T-64B, encore moins contre les T-80. Un T-55AM ou T-62M avec surblindages est presque invulnérable de face. Un obus APCBC-HE basique du canon D-10 de T-55 le met en piece, sans parler des HVAP, HEAT et APFDSDS développés durant les années 60 à 80. Evidemment le 115mm 2A20 et les 125mm 2A46 le réduisent en miettes.

l'obus HEAT de 85mm pour T-34/85 developpé dans les années 1970 (350mm penetration) suffirait a cuire l'AMX-30. Et pour continuer, 2 AMX-30 arabes ont été perdus durant la guerre, et les AMX-30 français n'ont rencontré aucune vraie résistance, comme je l'ai dit, aucun T-72 (en plus des "T-72" completements dégradés et sous équipés), mais que des T-54/55 et leurs copies chinoises, le tout avec des équipages lamentables. Donc, rien d'étonnant quant au résultat.

sans incident, et presque sans maintenance. Alors comme ça on a vu des T-80 "catastrophiques" dans l'armée ukrainienne ? haha. L'armée ukrainienne n'a aucun T-80 actif. Ses T-80UD ont presques tous été vendus (pakistan entre autres), et quelques uns ont été modifiés en T-84 (equivalent "supérieur" au T-90A), mais leur char principal est le T-64B, la plupart tres vieux et mal entretenus. Donc, un T-64B mal entretenu, oui c'est possible que le chargeur auto soit en piteux état.

pour sure d'ailleur c'est pourquoi le leclerc la remplacer rapidement et meme une version special du leclerc existe proto a un canon de 140 mm (leclerc terminateur)
