But in the book, Jo never regretted her decision to not marry Laurie. She never wrote him a letter right before he and Amy got married. Jo already loved Frederick Baer. I don’t like that this movie changed that key part of the story.

When Amy said that she feels like she is always second to Jo is kind of painful. And yet, by the end, Amy is the one who got the chance to go to Europe with their auntie, Jo didnt said anything and just swallowed the bullet like a trooper. Then, the same thing happened when Jo found out that Laurie and Amy is engaged, she is in pain but she never said anything to Amy because she loves her more than anything. Jo made so much sacrifices for her family, she's always the one who endures the pain. If anything? I think it is Jo who feel like she is always second to Amy. She got everything that is supposed to be for Jo, but Jo never complained. But also, for the record, Jo doesnt actually love Laurie, she doesnt even want to marry. So, I think Amy does deserve Laurie. I dont know about Laurie though, if he actually loves Amy.. Anyways, I think both of them are fascinating characters, and I really cant give my bias since Jo is the one who is telling the story. We dont really know what Amy had been through on the other hand. But also, I havent read the book/s so I dont really know what Im talking about 😂

To me, the trip to Europe is the perfect example of why Amy has always come second. People see her going to Europe after Jo's years of putting up with Aunt March and they think she got it unfairly, but what was the trip really? When Amy mentions her art, Aunt March is so clearly uninterested and it's clear the trip isn't to see Europe, it's to set Amy up with a wealthy husband. And that's the thing Jo never has to worry about. She gets to follow her dream of writing without worrying about marriage or money, but Amy faces so much pressure to marry to support her family. I think knowing that the boy she always put first treats her as the second option, her family treating her as their backup when Meg marries poor and the realisation that she has to put everything that could make her stand out second, just for people who treat her as the second option, just pushed the emotions over the edge. And that's why Amy seemed so vain as a little girl. She put herself first because no one else would.

@@freyablack4979 Yeah, I can see that too. That is so interesting. Amy has always been in the shadows since day one. But, I guess I can see the pain of Jo more since she is the kind of girl who wants to persist from the system, from the norm that women cant make an image of their own, which everyone thinks of otherwise. Even Meg mentioned that someday, Jo will get married and have kids, despite of Jo constantly saying that she does not have any plans of marrying. This just shows that no one really takes her seriously when it comes to this, this point of view of hers. You can really feel her pain especially when she preached about women is not only fit for love, there is more so much of them. But also, she feels lonely. It is a constant paradox of feels, that by the end, she kind of lost her main purpose? I mean, she decided to just go for it and just maybe try to get back with Laurie and marry him even if she doesnt love him, and it's because that is what everyone expected in the first place. Even by the end of her book, she published an ending in which herself got married, even though she preached in the whole book about how much she doesnt want to marry, just to fit for the standards of selling the book. Kind of losing the sense of writing the book in the first place (Except about telling her and her sisters' story ofcourse). I think Amy got her true happy ending, and Jo kinda didnt? I dont know, I hope Im making sense ^-^'

Actually laurie time spent with Amy made him grow to love her at least in the book, I dont believe he was choosing her just because he didnt get jo. Yes he wanted jo first but later he fell for amy. I dont know in the book they talked alot.

very unpopular opinion; i think Elle Fanning should have played Amy, she looks young enough to play a believable 12 year old, and old enough to play an 18 year old; she also has that snow maiden that Amy represents, which unfortunately, as phenomenal as Florence is, she doesn't have

I agree with you! Amy (despite her obsession with her “flat” nose in the book), was a golden-haired snow maiden, as you said. She was striking and got a lot of attention. Florence Pugh is not the Amy I have pictured all my life from reading the book as a child. Also she is way too loud and forceful for that era and comes off harsh.

Joy Phillips, in the books they grow into true love. They come back home newly married, deliriously happy, and increasingly mature, with the decision to use Laurie's family money to try to do some good in the world. In fact, the next book, Little Men, is about a school for poor boys that Joe and Friedrich are able to open because A&L keep it funded. Supporting each other as they watch over their only child, a physically fragile little girl who will not live long, they finally grow into the compassion that each so lacked in their selfish young days.
