That was great. Is there a way to have an idea about what color is inside geodes?
@meMiner6 жыл бұрын
I am not an expert on these geodes, but suspect the inside depends upon the mine from which they are found. There was another booth at the rock show with much more expenive geodes and their samples were blue-ish.
@R.M.MacFru6 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Certain areas are more likely to have specific types of crystals depending on the local geology. The Mexican geodes I have are generally either clear quartz, smokey quartz, or citrine. Generally. A very small percentage are amethyst. This has to do with the local elements that also seep into the formation. Celestine needs limestone and sulfur. If those elements are found in that location, then there's a chance to find Celestine. Knowing the local geology helps narrow down what you could possibly get.

Use the saw! And dont ever slice straight through as you could cut a single smokey quartz crystal in half. Slowly rotate and cut a line all the way around and slowly into the geode crust and you will have two ready to be polished slices

That sounds like a much better way to open one up. They guy that sold it said to smash it, but that was probably advice for people without access to a saw...

That's one of the nicest madagascar geodes I've seen so far, good job on the opening, they can break really badly and look like nothing special. Full of crystal and very clean too, Amy the one you picked up first, if you clean the outer end it will let some more light through, it's almost there now, a good scrub and maybe an acid dip will do the job.
@meMiner6 жыл бұрын

meMiner Nope, laurel and hardy old black and white films I watched with my mother, she loved them, reminded her of her childhood when she had to see all those at the movies. Oliver hardy,( the serious one ) said to Stanley laurel ( the thin idiot ) when I nod my head you hit it, referring to a large tent peg, so he nods and Stan hits him on the head whit the huge mallet.

Hey Rookie. That is a good age to start them off. I took Amy for gold when she was younger. She was interested for a short while, but we ended up taking a fishing rod too. I would pan or swim the creek for nuggets while she caught trout. She did find a little bit of gold, but fishing was more exciting. Now, she can prospect all day....or until she gets hungry.

I found a few naturally tumbled pieces of that here in Kitchener. Really nice pale blue color. Along with Madagascar, this part of the world is known for celestine, in fact the largest geode of any mineral is a walk-in geode of celestine, on South Bass Island, Lake Erie.
@meMiner6 жыл бұрын
I will look that up. I had no idea about Lake Erie having geodes. Your piece from Kitchener, do you think it was glacial?
@creaturetreedriftwoodart20666 жыл бұрын
Most likely is glacial, there is no evidence to my knowledge of celestine deposits around here, possibly near Cambridge and the the old do-lime quarry. Speaking of glacial deposits, there are huge glacial grooves with some interesting deposits on Kelleys Island, just to the right of South Bass Island.
@meMiner6 жыл бұрын
My brother has a large farm up Guelph Line and there is lots of exposed bedrock. I have never found a single crystal there or anywhere nearby. My Dad had a farm west of HWY 6, close to Cambridge, and there was exposed rock there too and I never found anything interesting. Getting into a quarry near Cambridge would be interesting, as it would have rock exposed that is deeper. Only nearby place I have been was Flamboro Quarry, on a club trip, and that was excellent. It was the first place that I found galena in vugs plus many other interesting crystals in the limestone.

Apparently the best spots to collect are in deserts. In Canada, geodes are found in either old volcanic ash beds or old sea beds which are now limestone. Sometimes, they erode out and can be in nearby on hillsides, or in lakes or streams. I have not found any good spots near me (yet), but it would be fun.

I use one in another video. There are a few methods to open a geode. The reason some people don't like a saw (other than they don't have one) is the break/cut is obviously manmade and they want something more natural.

@@ausy4839 Understood. They cost more here because somebody has to find them, ship them and sell them. I wouldn't buy one here either, if I could find similar here. Perhaps, you could have a business to collect these kind of rocks rocks and sell to stores in North America or online (eg. eBay)?
