The rhyme is being used ironically. The journal is old (a memory from a distant time that hasn't happened yet), new (because it was at that moment recreated from literally nothing by her memories), borrowed (from her daughter, spoilers), and blue (obvious).

Two different moments- each incredible in their own way. IMNSHO, however, the latter scene was the better storytelling and the more moving. We see- without being told- just how deeply troubled van Gogh the character was; even after the incredible, improbable, indisputable affirmation of his life and his work, the man still died by his own hand...
