@@jennifermountain9876 I was wondering. It is mentioned in some songs in French ("La chanson des restaurants du coeur", www.paroles.net/jean-jacques-goldman/paroles-les-restos-du-coeur), and a quick search on the net indicates that it is still a tradition in Poland (culture.pl/en/article/why-do-poles-leave-one-chair-empty-on-christmas-eve). I wonder if it could have been a (religious?) tradition in (some parts of) England at some point, and if the episode made a reference to that?

It’s not just that, it also calls back to the line about ‘what’s the point in being happy now, if they’re going to be sad later?’ Which is also applicable to the doctor himself and outliving his companions. Yet he returns to them at the end, because later sadness shouldn’t stop us from being happy now.

It also makes it more realistic. They’ve aged and become more mature. He’s now there son in law too. It’s odd that they never explored Amy having abandonment issues though. The doctor left her as a child, left her again for two years in the first episode, then again when Amy was left behind for around 40 years in an alternate time stream, now again here. Then again throughout season 7.

People always complain to try sound sophisticated like they explore ideas of fine arts or to try be the special snowflake who’s different. They’re the people who are part of the “new doctor hate bandwagon” where they whine about every post-regeneration doctor because the prior doctor was “better”. It happened with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi and look at them now, they’re the most beloved Doctors.

@@GamerXPERhonestly, 12 and Clara have been the closest I’ve ever seen a companion, like true familial platonic love, its so heartwarming. Because idk its a lovely idea that you can become so deeply attached and connected with someone that they become your family, not by blood or circumstance, but by the relationship formed between them. They have such a wonderful relationship, not becuz its perfect, but because the Doctor goes too far and makes mistakes out of that unconditional love, and its mutual.

Well, again, anyway. There was his original family, back on Gallifrey, then his daughter Jenny, he did technically marry Marilyn Monroe AND Queen Elizabeth. God, The Doctors family tree is really bloody confusing. Only people with a complicated family tree close to it are Snow White and Regina from Once Upon a Time, Regina being Snow's stepmother but also the stepmother of Snow's grandson, making her grandson her stepbrother, which would make her own daughter her mother by proxy and.... Okay, no. My head hurts now. Once Upon a Time's Snow White has a WAY more complicated and confusing family tree than The Doctor.

@@RecordGuyJ You are an idi0t. I watched and supported Dr Who since Jon Pertwee's time, right up to Peter Capaldi's time. Yes the show has been mildly progressive before and that's ok but now the Woke gender sh1t is just too much and it's doing great harm - not only to society but to a franchise where it has no purpose being in the first place. If you want that in your programmes, put it in Eastenders where it's relevent to what's happening in realtime. DON'T put it in a sci-fi entertainment show where it ISN'T and cram it down the throats of people who don't want it in their escapism. This is why Dr Who ratings are TANKING and the franchise is DYING, not that I expect you to give a sh1t about that, sounds like you only care about pushing some agenda from your multi-colured soapbox.

The whole ‘always having a seat ready for him’ reminds me of when 11 finds out Brig died in the Nursing Home. The Brigadier always insisted that a glass be ready for the Doctor, in case he ever decided to pop by for a visit. ❤️ The Doctor has plenty of people who would welcome him with open arms if he ever felt the need to stop by. I’m happy Amy and Rory showed him that.

No, it doesn't make this scene better. In this Xmas special The Doctor doesn't understood happy crying, because he doesn't have a family. At the end the episode he realized he has a family and finally happy tears came from him. This the scene The Doctor realized how important The Ponds meant for him. Because of this scene Amy and Rory's departure was so hard for The Doctor. Your theory is cool, but it's better to think this scene was happened before series 7.

In that episode we found out that The Doctor never really had a "family" and was made to sleep in the shed, because they thought he "would never be a Time Lord." @@andrewlocke9674 I really like Jodie's Doctor, but the largest flaw is the writing and the lack of huge, coherent overarching story. From day 1 of Matt we were wondering what the crack in the wall was, with 9th we had Bad Wolf (though that came later), etc, etc. I feel like a cool thing to play with for Jodie is that she's a free Doctor. She knows she didn't kill gallifrey, but since she's free, she doesn't know what to do. In the setup for tea at Yaz', she looks lonely and sad because she has nothing to do. She's free, but also bored.

@@otakushutin Jodie is only terrible because she is forced to carry out the propaganda and political views of BBC. With good scripts, some character development and logical build up the series can be saved. BBC can still bring in propaganda and political views, but as undertones and not as main focus.
