Or are we dependent on love, hope, optimism, positive outlook, experience, intelligence, to rise above our fears of the wasteland and its wastrels, just round the corner (geographically, and/or timewise)? Claustrophobic, intimate; pours out the fragility of urban lostness, precarious love teetering on the edge of booming tear-up. Oh please see this. I owe so much to you. Your music has had such a deep connection to me since I was 8. My Stepmum gave me your album as a gift the first time she met me. She said, ‘when your mum gives you into trouble play this song’. She was talking about ‘Just a Little Girl’ ...little did I know I had to use that album as a coping mechanism to actually deal with my Stepmum. She essentially gave me the antibiotic to her venom. When I was literally locked in a room, or felt deeply depressed or alone, I would pick up my dolls, and pretend they were acting out your songs. When I was getting bullied, I would imagine myself standing up to my bully at school and singing ‘Just one more look you’re gonna cross the line, I mean over the edge, you’re on thin black ice’. You gave me this alternate reality in your music and it was such a release. I could be this bold misfit in my head with confidence and courage. I’m 24 now, and I struggle with my sleep, so to come here and have you sing the anthem to part of my life just baffles me after all these years! When I was young I thought you were American because I didn’t have the internet haha. I’m Scottish so to find out you were From England was amazing. I can’t believe I used to get so upset thinking you were so far away in America and you were the only person who understood me lol. To find out after all this time you were British and closer than I thought makes my younger, inner self relieved for some reason. I don’t have social media so sorry I’m writing this to you here. Hopefully you see it and feel the admiration and love I have for you and your music! ❤️
