Former sign fabricator here. We used ACM (Dibond is a brand of ACM) in the signage industry. It came usually with a protective film to guard it from scuffs. Once the plastic film was removed then it revealed either a raw aluminum outer layer or a pre-primed aluminum outer layer. For oil painters (when the ACM is pre-primed) you remove the shipping film and then sand the ACM lightly (I use 180 grit) and paint directly on it. It is best, as Amy notes, not to sand away the factory primer, but not necessary for possible corrosion or degradation of the aluminum. It’s best for a consistency of paint application. I’ve found that when applying oils if the pre-primed layer is lightly sanded without exposing the aluminum underneath I avoid that sunken in look. I’m now using ACM with muslin glued to it and then coated with a couple coats of gesso. Excellent for making light weight panels to go out and do plein air. ACM can also be prepared with other traditional primers such as oil ground or acrylic gesso.

It's very much possible that the lens that Amy was using is a wider angle lens. Most Fujifilm cameras are cropped sensor, so a lens that is 50mm on a full-frame will look like a telephoto on these. Whereas a wider focal length will appear more like a 50mm. Human vision is often compared to a ~50mm lens in terms of the central field of view and perspective, but considering peripheral vision, it’s more like a wide-angle lens, closer to 20mm. My experience is that when taking candid photos by shooting from the hip without people noticing, it's better to use a wide-angle lens to capture everything. This way, even without composing the shot, you're more likely to keep the subject within the field of view. Distortion really only becomes an issue when you shoot the subject at very close quarters.

Those are good points. I guess with the hi res cameras we have today you could get away with a 20mm and crop in post.

The fact that they have plastic over the aluminum, you could just buff the aluminum and apply gesso you would think. Curious as to why this wouldn't be the case.

I felt this way too. However it actually helped me a lot. I can get defensive about technical things when really I need to say “Look I get it that some people adore technical details” and then own directly that this is not what my work or life is a is about -ie screw ups on my website!!! Lord. We are sort of amazing trying to twirl so many batons- honest work, technique l, lead sane and healthy lives… But I felt Jeff that you were honestly curious and ultimately reverential. And Amy was honest-like her work-not pretending. Kudos to both of you for artistic expression AND technique( including doing this insanely demanding podcast). And especially willing to be vulnerable and true. The world needs this mucho.
