Its possible to admire Amy Winehouse and appreciate Katie Melua. Very differently singing styles with beautiful voices. The original was sung by black baritone William Gillespie in the 1840's movie Blues in the night. His is accapella and a beautiful mournful version.

I had no idea. Katie Medula was the first women other than the old time Amercian classics I heard singing this song. It's been awhile, but i remember her (Katie's) rendition as being a bit softer and possibly more melodic.. What ever I was totally impressed with her. J Katie Medula. Jas any one heard how she's doing ..think I heard she had an accident or something. She so pretty and talented. Found her on U tube when checking out. Lies in the night So this isn't Amy Winehouse. That's the conclusions. Will be checking Katie Medula out again first opportunity I have. I was originally researching it a while back. Because I Wanted to sing it. Loved it as a little girl. Then rediscovered it. But my "singing career" came to abrupt end. Lost voice shortly after I almost had one still love the song. That's for the info on the artist

i just listened to Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Ella, sing this. I love the oldies. Think they are the best. So I'm really surprised, even maybe a bit shocked, to find I prefer this to them all. I think Amy is the best. Does the best job. Has the spirit of the song better than the others. Her music is different, too, the backing. That piano. Arrangement can change a singer's song beyond recognition almost - turn a great singer's rendition into something merely tolerable. That applies to all. Gotta admit that. So give credit where it's due. This arrangement and these musicians are good. I like them better than Calloway's on this and so on.. I love that piano. Fits the story - which I see as the musings of a disappointed lover leaving town on a train... the piano steps along the track like the wind instruments can't do... After all these years, sold on Amy. wow.... Aaaaahhhh....... I just saw the comments down there... this is NOT Amy Whitehouse !!?? This is Kate Malua ? I have never even heard of her.
