I use the Hamilton Beach to make bread with 3 cups of four all the time. To make it work I use 2 cups of flour to thoroughly mix the dough into a very wet dough and slowly add the remaining dough at 1/4 cup at a time until it pulls from the sides of the bowl. It makes a really smooth ball of dough. She added all the flour too fast and built the gluten which bogged it down and started stripping the cheap nylon worm gears.

Thanks for the video! I've never had a stand mixer before, so I ended up buying the Hamilton Beach stand mixer. I really want a KitchenAid - and can afford it - but I figured I'd buy a basic, cheap model to start out. Also, I got mine at Walmart today on Black Friday for $60. If I don't end up using it in a few months, that's a lot less wasted than $250+ on the more expensive stand mixers.

+veriria Congratulations on the great price! I think for basic mixing you will do fine with it. I wouldn't overload it but for a starter mixer, it is a good choice for the price! Please let me know what you've made in it and how you are liking it so far.

Stop waisting money... save for the better mixer... just wait. Good things come to those who wait... bet that thing is a piece of junk. Look for used ones that are certified fixed for 1/2 the price... please live don’t waist money. Always by the best and just wait the time out. Trust me! Even the older ones that are rebuilt... are excellent. Buy the better brand.

Time Warp Makeup really... bread? My cousin killed it. 7 th loaf. I gave her my mums old first kitchen aid. Keeping it in the family! Haha. I bet she will pass it to her daughter. I replaced the cord... that it! I was 3 when my mum purchased her first kitchen aid. I’m 43. Wow... haha... take a licking! I have had it serviced. And the cord replaced. But nothing ever failed or was replaced but the cord. I just got to the bread... hahaha seriously my poor cousin, she killed it. Or it failed her. Hahaha. Yup that thing is good for thin batters... huge fail on dough!

Wow I was shocked that the sunbeam did not preform the simple task of making cookies, I have been using my grandmothers sunbeam hand mixer that she got for wedding gift in the late 50's, and that mixer works like a charm!

Zachary Stefanich Thanks for commenting. I believe we got one of the 10%-20% that have a manufacturing defect. I'm sure, based on previous experience, that it will perform well. It's just "Caveat emptor", let the buyer beware (and use it within 30 days. Machines from the 40's and 50's are built way different than the ones today. I hope yours runs forever and that you can pass it down to your children.

That’s a shame. My 70’s Stainless Mixmaster, has handled everything I’ve thrown in it, without issue. Made 4 dozen toll house the other day, The Stainless bowls are better too. No water in the bottom section. I bought it about 8 years ago at a goodwill for $15. Added a Milkglass Bowl, and Juicer assembly w/porcelain reamer. Best citrus juicer I’ve ever used.

Actually, the Bosch Universal is THE best mixer regardless of price…you can buy a Bosch Universal Plus for $42.00 a month. The average mixing/beating life of the Bosch Mixer is between 18 and 24 years. What is the point of paying less if you have to buy a new one every few years? Most people don’t know that Kitchen Aid was bought out by Whirlpool in, I believe, the 60’s and when that happened the manufacture of the Kitchenaid was outsourced to a foreign country AND the gearing was changed from metal to plastic, which will burn out if you are trying to knead whole grain dough. I collect vintage stand mixers and have Sunbeam, Hamilton Beach AND Kitchenaid mixers made in the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s that all work fine but none of any of thos brands that were made in the 1980’s or 1990’s are still working……except a 1974 Bosch Universal that I bought my daughter that is still okay and my 1996 Bosch Universal That is still going strong after all of those years of hard use. I just this week got a new Bosch Universal Plus mainly because I am a mixer junkie. I have been wanting one for several years. It has the stainless bowl and the black base. I finally decided to buy one because I found out that all of the attachments that I have will fit this new Bosch…and trust me that except for a couple of attachments, I have every Bosch attachment made since 1980…. there are a couple of new ones made in the last few years like the Spiralizer that I don’t have yet but my attachments fitting was the deciding factor. If you want my honest opinion, almost ANY vintage appliance, that was made before the advent of “planned obsolescence” for appliances, is going to be better made than any brand made in the last 20 years. I vote, in general, for a Bosch every time.

My vintage Bread Maker's Bread Machine makes all the breads I need, so my vintage Oster Kitchen Center does the job I need for everything else. My 18 yr old Bravetti Multi-Purpose handheld mixer (18 yrs old), does an excellent job for all of the smaller matters. Used my Bravetti handheld to make 2 doz. sugar cookies for a tea treat a few night ago. Though I would have loved to own a Kitchen Aid, the reality is I do not do a lot of baking, so my Oster satisfies many of my kitchen needs--mixing, blender, slicer, ice cream maker, ice crusher and meat grinder..

I have the Dash mixer it's a great little mixer but the one thing the man didn't do is, it does have a slide to move the bowl from right to left. When you're mixing you need to move the slide over to the right and it works fine. Also makes it easy to put in the extra ingredients because it leaves the space over to the right If you're going to review do it fairly.I also have a KitchenAid mini which I love but this little machine works great for making small batches of cookies or cakes and I use it a lot.

Finally, a raw and real comparison of stand mixers! Thank you Amy and Eric for all the effort and hard work in making this video. I think you guys are the first to ever compare stand mixers of different brands to a very personal and believable level. I hope you guys will also compare hand mixers, hand + stand mixer combos and stand mixers that have the planetary mixing action but are way cheaper than the legendary Kitchenaid (along the price range of the Hamilton Beach perhaps?). I do have many brands to recommend for your consideration. Is it better for me to e-mail you personally on the brands or should I just list it in the comments here?

At the time we made the mixer showdown video, Amazon had around 23% bad (1 or 2 stars) for the Sunbeam Mixmaster models with many DoA complaints. +mmtorres26 The HB would be good for basic baking. The test was fun because there was a lot of things that came up that I hadn't considered before using them. I think the big thing for me was the attachment has a lip that catches ingredients...as well as the power issues for heavy doughs and bread. It would probably be a good beginner machine to get you started and at least you would know the limitations. Black Friday is coming up so you probably can get a good deal on it.

I have been greatly enjoying your video's. I thank-you for this particular video series. After watching this I will never regret what it cost me when I purchased the KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Mixer that has the lift bowl. I purchased mine many years ago, but have just recently been using it to learn how to do bread. I spent most of my life hating to cook, it is only because of the high end Mixer and Food Processor, that I have finally found some of that "Joy of Cooking". I so look forward to your next video.

Diane Koenig Thanks for watching and commenting. Which "Joy of Cooking" do you have? The old one where they actually commented on things in an entertaining way, or the new one that stripped out all that good info? I hate cooking too, but am learning due to how bad some food out there is (who really wants to go out and pay for someone to deep fry froze food for you, rather than make it fresh for you (think CHILI'S!!!) Now I can see why Olive Garden is hurting.) I'm glad you are dealing with cooking and watching our videos. That's nice to hear. When Amy upgraded from her Sunbeam to a classic KA 4 or 4.5 quart?, I thought she did it to be a snob like Martha Stewart. The Sunbeam had the basic attachments, and it was good enough for my mom. We didn't need the more expensive attachments. The KA just mixed so much better, so now I see why she did that. But fast forward 20 years and it is amazing how badly made these "cheaper" stand mixers really are. We'll see if we kill the Hamilton Beach in the Finals!

Thank-you Eric for your nice reply. I don't have the book of "Joy of Cooking", sorry I was just using that as a phrase because of how much I hated to cook and how the nice appliances and the cool kitchen gadgets have helped me to finally find some joy in cooking. I also enjoyed seeing Amy's cookbook collection, I collect the old Betty Crocker cookbooks and a few others that are really old. Like you, my hubby questioned why all the new things for the kitchen. However, he has so enjoyed the great improvement with my cooking and my wanting to now try many different new dishes that I would'nt cook before that he now no longer asks "Why do we need that?". I haven't bought high end pots and pans, although I greatly appreciate Amy explaining all about iron clad and it's benefits. Again thank-you for your video's, they have been a huge help for people with their cooking and the many ways to go about it.

Diane Koenig You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that you are having some success with your cooking and it's making your husband happy. Cookware has improved so much over the last decade, that there is no need to buy the high end things. Heck, Amy's able to get some decent Caphlon pans for free at Macy's by doing some surveys and getting gift cards. The William Sonoma pans are pretty. But unless you know how to cook, it is overkill. But Amy likes things that are shiny, so I try not to ask about it too much. I'm glad you like to watch our videos, and I hope you continue to watch and expand your interest in cooking. We're learning as well too.

+MrHeavymetalmania I agree. We had one 20 years ago that ran fine. In fact, I liked the thing, but it doesn't have the same capabilities as the Kitchen Aids for attachments. Being that I had never owned or used a KA before that, I was completely satisfied. We used to go to the factory outlet store and pick them up pretty cheap (for Xmas gifts). Then we got a KA a few years later and never looked back. I have no doubt the Sunbeam can handle cookie dough. Glad your pizza dough turned out well. It was funny how some of these tried to handle bread dough.

Eric: re the Sunbeam mixer, why are you using a high speed to mix cookie dough? High speeds are for making whipped cream and meringue where you beat air into the ingredient. You caused the motor to overheat (that explains the odor you smelled) and the mixer responded by shutting off which is better than having it catch fire. You were able to restart the mixer after a very brief cooling-off period and then you ran it even FASTER, it overheated again and shut down. The shutting down is a good safety feature so the overheated motor doesn't catch fire. The mixer didn't have much of a chance to cool off and you didn't even feel the mixer with your hand to see if it was hot. Had you let it cool off for 10 - 15 minutes, feeling it with your hand to check the temperature, and resumed mixing your cookie dough on speed 1 I'll bet you would have gotten through the mixing task without interruption.
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 8 жыл бұрын
+chris319 Thanks for watching the video and commenting. I'm going to disagree with you on the overheating. The motor shut off and would come back by simply turning the speed to off and then turning it back on immediately. The motor overload is temperature sensitive and takes a certain amount of time to 'reset'. I didn't wait and the motor would come back on, albeit, for a limited time. A regular overload will cause the circuit to open until that magic time is up. I was an electrician in the Navy and am fully aware of how motors work, as I have fixed plenty of them. I commented on here in the past that several people had similar issues with this model. I believe I got a bad one. There are good ones and bad ones. As for "overheating", that thing never ran long enough to overheat. Even if it did, it should have come back to life at some point and never did.

Interesting and entertaining review. Had to adjust the volume several times because Amy tends to shout at times. I have the Hamilton Beach mixer I bought in February 2016. It looked capable of mixing batter, eggs, and creams. I don't really need it to mix dough because I use the dough cycle of one of my two bread machines. But after seeing this review I'm now tempted to just try out making some dough. I've made shortbread and butter cookies and cheesecake in this mixer without any problems. I don't mind having to scrape the sides of the bowl occasionally, because I like to check the feel of the dough and not rely only on my eyesight. Also, I normally tilt the head to add additional ingredients. Otherwise I use a funnel. I love the suction cup feet to hold the mixer in place as it is always used in a specific place. But I have a small kitchen, so at times need to move it out of the way to the dining room and have had no problems moving it because of the suction or weight. I bake all my baked goods, sometimes several times a week, so it does get used often and regularly. Mixing creams and batter from scratch are the primary uses. If I didn't have my bread machines, I doubt I'd consider making a lot of dough in a mixer under $100 regularly. I make focaccia frequently by hand and I'm thinking of assigning that task to this machine as it is a small amount. I discovered that my Oster blender makes better whipped cream faster, so it's a plus if this mixer can make some dough occasionally. This mixer won't do all the things a high-end mixer will do, but I think it is easier to use for many tasks than a hand mixer. Therefore, it is a basic mixer, and as such will meet my needs until I decide if I really want to spend more on one that is heavy duty.

So you know, the disc that is at the top of the beater is to prevent mixes from walking up the shaft. It is designed to deflect the mix back into the bowl. You only add ingredients after tipping the mixer back.
@AmyLearnsToCook
@AmyLearnsToCook 8 жыл бұрын
I can understand having the disc at the top for the dough hook but for the paddle...batter shouldn't ride up the paddle. I think the problem is that the bowl is too narrow at the top and the mixer head is too wide. They should include a pouring shield or something because many times you are alternating between wet and dry ingredients and it is a pain to constantly have to lift the tilt head.

Amanda Burns Amazon shows between 11%-22% "1 star" rating for various Sunbeam Heritage Series models for performance reasons, mostly due to DOA to "1 speed works out of 12", etc. So, not entirely surprising, unless you read up on it first before buying. Thanks for watching. Amy has another Hamilton Beach stand mixer, but I think it's bigger than 4 quarts.

I think it's the model 63390 which is probably 4 quarts. We are planning on reviewing it.

Argh I missed this video. How frustrating! I laughed at Eric when the mixer stopped and started and smelt like it was burning, he cracks me up. That was a great experiment and I would much prefer my kitchenaid over all of them I think. Fantastic video Amy and Eric thank you.

FitAnge S Thanks for watching. Yeah, you usually catch these pretty quick. Thought something happened to you. Well, hopefully you'll enjoy the battle of the KA vs the Bosch Universal. The Bosch has a newer one out that fixes some of it's issues, but we won't get it until next year. I'd like to get the KA commercial 8 quart and put it up against the new bosch. That should be fun. Then we can actually make 6 (or more) loaves each. woo-hoo!Hope all is well with you.

Eric Learns to Cook I've been away in business but I just noticed your new video at work and am still having to watch it, that's how I picked up in your last video, I'm sorry I missed it. I loved the video and I'll be sharing both videos on Facebook cause you guys put so much effort into going into detail about them all. Also cause you guys are so nice and all your videos are fantastic. I'll watch your latest one when I get home 😊

FitAnge S I forgot to mention that we were thrown off a bit on our schedule because of the nature of this video (aka, the length). Poor Amy spent a considerable amount of time to cut it down to something manageable. It's long by even our standards, so that's why no double cookie recipe on the second video. Not like we're gonna burn up either of those bigger guys anyways, right? One might walk itself off the table, but that's a different story.

You received a defective sunbeam. I’ve had mine for 9 years and it’s never shut off or had any issues at all.

It’s what happens when you review a machine and don’t read the manual. The Dash Mini has a slide lever to avoid the sticking of the mass to the side. They didn’t even see the slide lever below the bowl sticking out in front.

The moral of this story?... Don't go near a cheap mixer, spend the extra. These are no better than a hand whisk.

It's too bad the sunbeam died because it's a good machine when it works. Unfortunately quality control is nonexistent today for some reason. I attempted to get an artisan stand mixer and it arrived with a dented bowl the lever that holds the head down wouldn't go all the way over the spring and washer that holds the attachments was missing then we turned it on speed by speed and listened and it increased speed crazy high on its own then slowed down again and back up. My husband said that's no good. The reviews on Amazon are not good on these. One or two people had to pack them up and return them three times before they got a good one. I'm too old for that so I gave up and all the issues they are having with Gray stuff in people's batter has been going on for years now and kitchenaids does nothing. I tried to post my review on their website and they wouldn't print it. Makes me wonder if only good reviews are posted on there makes me not trust the company and the longevity of these mixers for the price. Another woman on there said she went through three in like three years and she won't get another one. Too bad they don't consider they are putting their names on these products and have some pride in that

@@MzClementine oh yes big time, it seems to be the norm any more, they are not made like they use to be but then nothing is really. They have even taken the spring off that holds the attachments and that makes them clunk around now. I dont understand it but when whirlpool bought them out from hobart, thats when it all started going down hill. If you watch some of Amys other reviews with kitchenaids, she has had some problems too and had to take them back. Theres been a problem with the stainless steel bowls and people wash them but still get dough thats gray streaked from the bowl. Oil dripping down into the batter. a number of issues. its really too bad and sad.

I think you shorted the Hamilton Beach just a little bit. It seems to be a solid unit that stays in place. As for the dough hook goes I hand wash that piece so it is not an issue. Also, you got that HB for $50, that was a steal. Nice video.

The HB was my pick as the winner. It works the best out of the ones that I tested. Yeah...$50 was a bargain! Thanks for watching!

I agree, these are parts you use constantly, especially when you have more difficult recipes, wash by hand and will be fine, and as easy. My debate now Is to take this HB model or with the 63227 model. Didn’t see reviews for this one aside the one from the company itself.

I think the bowl on the dash and go has an adjustment to bring it close to the side of the bowl which would help mix better
@AmyLearnsToCook

+Jerry M We tried it both ways. We ended up using the setting that was recommended in the manual. It seemed to have a lot of power but I think there is just a problem with the whole design of the mixing action, especially with the dough hooks. They were really bad and didn't mix but rather ripped the dough into shreds. They need to redesign the shape of the dough hooks. The issue of the flour being sucked into the motor is a big one as well. A mixer with the planetary action...like the Hamilton Beach, is the way to go. There are several models out there with this type of mixing action that are around the $100 price range. I am probably going to test some of them out in the near future....the first one being the Oster.

There is a small black slide handle at the base of the mixer that moves the bowl over, if you don't move it , it will stay centered. I have a larger sunbeam that has this . Not to fond of it either.
Can this CHEAP stand mixer beat my KitchenAid?
