When the worlds at stake is an absolutely phenomenal song. Like… Jeff blim really wrote a song about a mother’s inner conflict about how she never wanted to have a kid in the first place and the struggles of being a teen mom and how now all she wants is for her daughter to have a better life than she can giver her and in the same musical he wrote a song about a disease that causes violent diarrhea

When The World’s At Stake made me cry the first time I heard it. While I wasn’t a teen mom, I was just barely in my 20s, and my oldest kiddo was NOT planned. I luckily only had to do the single mom thing for a few months before I met the awesome man I ended up marrying, but I vividly remember the terror I felt the entire pregnancy, right up until she was born and I found that crazy mom strength. Idk how in the hell Jeff Blim managed to capture that, but he did it perfectly.

The whole "I played Tony in Independence Community Theeatre's production of West Side Story" bit was completely improvised by Joey. Each show, he says something different during that part, which is why you can see Jamie and Jeff trying to hold back their laughter at that part. If you scour KZbin you can find some outtakes from different nights where he says different things (there's also a very funny outtake from the song Independence where Joey forgets the words and just repeats "ho ho ho" for like 10 seconds that I highly recommend watching)

Mark Swiderski and Meredith Stepien with What If and Together, but also Ouch My Butt and Duck Is Lord. Nick Gage with Holy Musical B@man and Dark, Sad, Lonely Knight, but also Dynamic Duet and Robin Sucks. And finally, we have Clark Baxtresser and Pierce Siebers who wrote When I Was and Long Ago and Far Away, but also Get In My Mouth and Not So Bad (technically not StarKid, but I'll let it slide).

OK I watched it now. Just to give some background info, this show is based on an educational video from the 80s/90s called The Oregon Trail. In it you would pick a name for your family members, a profession (farmer/banker/carpenter, which would give you various advantages or disadvantages in the game), and then set off on the trail from Missouri to Oregon. There would be a bunch of obstacles throughout, like rivers, etc., and you had to hunt for food and replenish supplies, etc. The game could also randomly kill off your oxen or a family member due to disease, and the most well-remembered is dysentery, which is why it's so prominent in the show. If you've played the game before, the show is *full* of game references. They also added the audience participation as a reference to the games, though in-game you don't get to pick which family member dies. Hope that helps! Great reactions! Rachel's solo in this is my favorite Starkid song *ever.*

I like how I at first thought “Amy has never played Oregon Trails/The Trail to Oregon? How? Didn’t she get to play it in schoo- Oh.” And actually just had a moment to realize. The Oregon Trail is a game based on the actual Oregon Trail, an event in *American* history. Of course, Amy isn’t going to know what it is! That would be the equivalent of us knowing and playing a video game based on the founding of the United Kingdoms. I don’t know, I just thought that was a really interesting minor detail. I love seeing differences in culture, especially as one of those quirky Americans with all sorts of different things so I wanted to share my thoughts here.
@missmossie20104 жыл бұрын
It's true, Amy wouldn't know about The Oregon Trail game because it's an American thing. But I do have to correct your analogy. There ARE video games (and board games, actually) based around the conquering of Britain (and other places) that Americans play. For example: Crusader Kings (II), Risk, the Civilization series. Those are the ones I can think of and there are probably many others. They may not be based on the "founding" of it specifically, but they definitely follow history and allow you to basically do what the conquering nations (Britain, France, Spain, etc) did **shrug**
@taylorh18724 жыл бұрын
+preparedfordementors1123 That’s fair, I haven’t played those games but I’ve heard of some of them (I actually didn’t know Risk was a game based on Europe’s history; that’s pretty neat.) Thank you for your thoughts/correction, I guess I was trying to put it more in a sense that many Americans have played Oregon Trails because it’s implemented into our schools to help us learn that history (of course, not every school does this but there are many that do so.) The game is known so well because we all played it at an early age, making us more familiar with it and it’s many quirks. So, while one can play a game based on Europe and the invasions involved with that history; an American would be more likely to recognize Oregon Trails than those other games. Hopefully I explained that well without sounding rude. 😅
@londongirl27684 жыл бұрын
Am British, can confirm
@missmossie20104 жыл бұрын
Masquerade No worries. I’ve also never played any of those games (although I am considering trying out Crusader Kings). Idk if Risk is actually based on Europe’s history for sure, but I do know that it’s all about conquering the world, which is what European nations tried to do. For my personal experience, my school had The Oregon Trail, but it wasn’t really used as a teaching tool. (If it had been, maybe I would have gotten to play it more.) Between that and this baseball game that I can’t remember the name of, it was on our classroom computer, but only those who got to use the computer got to play it, which means I only got to play it for like 2 seconds, since everyone else used the computer and I didn’t have the chance to. I know the game and its quirks, as you say, but I never actually played the game. So you do have a point (I’m not trying to counteract your explanation at all), but I just wanted to share my experience 😊

Is it to watch how stuff bounces?" - "I'm experiencing a lot of things for the first time and I have to figure it out by trial and error... and putting it in my mouth." - "I mean, he knew the rules, he played the game. I respect him for that." Like, you would never know that was actually a woman in her late 20s because it's so convincing. Also, love "Speedrun."

Here's a little Fun Fact for people who may not know, Amy included: Trail To Oregon was put on in 2014. One year later, in 2015, Starkid put the show on again for a four day run in New York City, marking the first, and only, time a Starkid Production has gotten a full run in New York City thus far. A good friend of mine lives in New York and attended one of the showings. For this particular showing, the audience decided to name the Daughter: Brian Holden. And, as luck would have it, Brian Holden was, in fact, backstage. So he decided to have some fun and when they came back from Intermission, instead of Jaime coming out to sit on the wagon to prepare for her solo number, the curtains pulled back and Brian Holden himself was sitting there. Joey walked out on the stage as McDoon, took one look at Brian and, as McDoon, went, "Who the Hell are you?!" Brian was like, "I'm Brian Holden, The Child Bride. Let's do this!" Obviously, Brian eventually left and Jaime came out to continue the show. But man I wish someone had recorded that moment and put it on KZbin.
@user-lp4qj1sn3h4 жыл бұрын
Ok couple things about Oregon: 1) it’s based on The Trail to Oregon online game that simulates the journey pioneers took to Oregon and in the game you type in all the names of the people in your wagon which is why the audience gets to choose the names. It’s also really easy to die in the game which is why there’s a voter death in the show! 2) When they did the shows live, the audience voted by ballots to choose which character would die so it was different every time. They just filmed every possible ending for the KZbin version 3) Jeff was so excited by the Jack Bauer name suggestion bc he loved Jack Bauer, so much so that an earlier draft had him as a character so it was exciting that that would be his name in the filmed version lol 4) During the dysentery death scene what you can’t see is Joey off to the side making all the fart noises himself lmao 5) You should 1000% watch the blooper video for Trail to Oregon, it’s on the Starkid channel and it’s just Joey messing up in a million different silly ways, it’s wonderful

So Oregon Trail was a legendary game when I was a kid. It was edumacational and fun as hell. The entire show referencing bankers, killing way more animals than you could possibly carry, dying of dysentery, fording/caulking/floating the wagon are all things that happen in the game. Most of the time you would lose half your party if not the entire party on your way especially if you got unlucky with river crossings (let's be serious, nobody ever used the ferry). This show is one giant meme for kids who grew up in the US in the 90s and it's glorious. Also Joey is unbelievably great in this show, just sayin

I'm sure that other folks have explained how the show worked already, but in the off chance that they haven't, they had the audience name each character and the family's last name each night, and then during intermission the audience voted on which family member would die that night. They filmed the 5 different endings over I think 2 nights of shows so I believe the people who attended filming nights got to see multiple endings!! One of my dear friends who I met through the Starkid fandom lived in Chicago and went to a ton of TTO performances and she would always ask us for names to shout out for the characters! Our favorite was she named someone (maybe the mother?) "douche-canoe" and apparently the Starkids loved it. I remember when they first announced how the show would work I was just SO impressed, and I think it's a really unique idea to have audience participation in live theatre like this. I can only imagine how much practice it took to be able to fit essentially any name into the songs! Loving the videos by the way and so glad you've been enjoying Starkid. It's been a part of my life for 8ish years now and it's such a joy to watch someone experience them for the first time :)

I believe they filmed all of the deaths over the course of two nights. One night, they ended up having the Ox die, and apparently it was filmed but the video probably won’t be released at this point unfortunately :( I hope this helps for anyone wondering!!

Hi Amy! I noticed that you were having trouble understanding some of the backstory of this show, so perhaps I can help: The Oregon Trail was a popular early computer game in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Due to its historical basis, the game was frequently used in American schools and as such an entire generation of American children grew up playing it frequently. The game is set in the 1800's and involves creating a family / party and trying to get them from Independence, Missouri on the east coast of the U.S., to Oregon on the west coast. Players got to name their family members as well as pick the general profession the family was involved in (Farming, Banking, or Carpentry ). This is the basis for the interactive parts of the show, as well as Jeff's joke about the family being Farmers because " ...I wrote the show... and that's just how this one goes." The game was notoriously difficult and few people ever successfully made it to Oregon due to the many dangers along the way. Players had to carefully choose what supplies to buy and what to try to acquire on the way, as well as what pace to travel at and how to handle certain obstacles along the way. These choices affected the ability of the family members to survive due to risk of starvation, disease, or other hazards. The game is particularly famous for a large portion of players losing either because they tried to fjord (cross) a river and died, or because the members of the family contracted Dysentery. The Speedrun song (and the line in Jaime's song about "crank up its pace to fast") is a reference to many players who would further challenge themselves by attempting to complete the game as fast as possible, with their families frequently dying in the process due to being overburdened by a lack of supplies and rest. If you have any more questions I'd be happy to help answer them!

One small correction on this 2 year old comment. Independence, Missouri is not on the east coast of the US. It is almost directly in the center. In the state of Missouri. What that starting point actually depicted was one of the eastmost points of the purchased Louisiana territory that the US acquired from France decades after the founding of the actual nation. The city most associated with this purchase and the subsequent burst of American pioneers out west is St. Louis, Missouri. Most famous for its monument of the Gateway Arch. A massive metal archway representing St. Louis' status as the "Gateway to the West" as it was the launching point for many travelers including the famous explorers Lewis and Clark. Most of the traditional Oregon trail travelers followed after these travelers from the further west Independence, Missouri about 30 years afterwards when the trail had been slightly more established. (Apologies for the long winded comment. I am invested as I am from St. Louis myself.)

This is one of my favorites... It's just pure starkid chaos and always reminds me of why I love them all so much. Also I think that it has some of the best songs that highlight those specific actors voices... like Wagon on Fire is just phenomenal! Also Joey in the whole show is just amazing. I can see why you were confused at the beginning lol if you've never played Oregon Trail and don't know what it's based off of I can see why you'd be confused for a hot second. But I appreciate how you just roll with it

To answer some of your questions, yes, the audience each night chose who died! I don't know if they polled the audience at intermission or asked them in that moment, but the audience would choose who died every night. If anyone was interested, there's a record of every performance's character names and who died at talkingoregon(.)tumblr(.)com/names. Additionally in case anyone didn't know, the show is based on the game Trail to Oregon, where you can name everyone in your wagon party and it is very common for someone (or everyone) in the party to die of dysentery, which is why the audience gets to choose the names and who dies. They wanted to make it feel more like you were playing the game or watching the game come to life.

In one playthrough of Oregon Trail, I had one person left and I tried to ford the river. My last ox died halfway through and I lived on my provisions in the middle of the river for a year, and then died. I was wondering the other day how Amy would react to this show without any experience with the game, and voila! Thanks, Amy!

This musical is so interesting because Joey improvised a new line for General store guy, it just wasn't the botched note every night! And every night one of the family members dies is different, and presumably there was an ending where the Ox dies. And there are deleted scenes where Joey forgot some of his limes in independence, and one time at the end of a show at with the Ox going "Come on buddy, the waters just right"

Trail to Oregon is a video game that a lot of American students had to play in elementary/middle school for our history classes. You got to choose the names of everyone in the family and had to strategically keep them alive on their journey to Oregon during the Gold Rush. A good bit of the jokes directly reference stuff in the game, and the music as well give a lot of nods to the original 8-bit soundtrack

People probably already explained this to you, but back in 1975 a computer video game came out called OREGON after the original unpublished version, The Oregon Trail. This was a point-click game where you could name the wagon party of travelers, and had to make it down the trail without any of your party members dying. There are several ways to die. Bitten by a snake, starvation, being too cold, getting a disease. But the point was to make it to Oregon without casualties, or at least having one party member left. Often times you had to ford the river, and drive the wagon through a fast running river. The musical at the beginning explains the feel of this by allowing each show to be customizable. Sometimes they might forget each other's names, which is why they are often spoken aloud during the show. It was a great way to relive my childhood game from the early 2000's as the game was updated and re-released multiple times between 1980 and 2009.

I think you should do Black Friday, personally its my favorite of their shows, Twisted is technically better but I fell in love with Black Friday. The choreography and the lighting are spectacular, if you're into theories there is so much goddamn theory material, all the performances are great. Its just all around an amazing show Starship is also really good though. Lots of great puppets, Joey in the lead role is always something I need more of, and its got some of their best songs

6:35- Interesting bit of trivia, that line was supposed to be 'blood', not 'mud', basically referring to tea bagging a corpse. Supposedly, that long pause was the actor realizing he got the line wrong and someone in the back just signaled him to keep going.

I first watched the trail to oregon before I had ever heard of the oregon trail game so naturally I just assumed that the writers had taken a lot of drugs and then farted out this musical. I tried to search it on google a year later because I wanted to rewatch it but misremembered the title as "oregon trail" so then I found information about the game and realised the show was a parody of that, not purely a fever dream I'd had when I was ill one time. It made a lot more sense on the second watch through, though it remains iconically weird.

The Oregon Trail was a PC game in the late 80's Early 90's that was played and hosted in classes along with typing lessons. It was a historical education game that was a lot of fun, and the point was to get your family to survive from Missouri to Oregon. In the song Independance! they say a lot of stock game phrases. And things, like being bitten by rattlesnakes and finding fruit, were part of the random game incidents. The most common way for your family to die was dysentery from a bacteria that was in unclean drinking water.
