A friend paid several hundred dollars for his initial service on the CRF300L Rally. I expected a high price at the stealership but was shocked. He returned last month for the 6000 mile service. Hundreds of more dollars for what was essentially an oil change. They way overfilled it, probably dumping in two quarts of oil. He rode home, 80 miles, and had oil dripping onto his garage floor. It was leaking at the oil filter cover but the entire lower engine and skid plate were a mess. They may have reused the gasket, but either way, it was scored and leaking. I guess the good news was they didn't change the oil and leave the old filter, although it would have been better if they had. My friend called and talked to the "mechanic" and was told that too much oil isn't a problem! My friend bought an oil change kit on Amazon with the oil, filter and gasket and redid the work himself to ensure that the work was done properly. That's why my BMW G310GS hasn't been to the dealer since I purchased it over four years ago. I do all of the maintenance. I'm slow, but I'm methodical and fussy. My friend learned that the stealership is not only expensive, but they'll mess up your bike. Another friend told me of a guy who had brake work done at a dealer. They didn't replace the mounting bolts. The owner was riding home on the highway when the brake caliper locked up the rear wheel and caused a nasty crash. Stealership mechanics are a threat to more than your wallet. They can literally KILL you. At the very least, double check their work before throwing a leg over the saddle. Whenever possible, do the work yourself. If that isn't possible, find a good independent experienced motorcycle mechanic.

CATASTROPHE? My 2023 Goldwing developed the dreaded ‘tick-tick’tick’ tapping camshaft on the right hand bank immediately after the second service at only 1,800 miles. Honda had the machine back for (at first) three months (and then later) five months. The ticking got worse and the bike started to misfire and spit back through the intakes, occasionally stalling and cutting out. It had quite obviously dropped a valve and at 2,800 miles it quit altogether. The bike was still within the ‘extended warranty’ period but Honda declined all assistance as they felt they had done enough! I had use of the bike for only one year in the three that I have owned it. Anybody want a non-running, three year heap of sh*t, under 3,000 miles? Upset……. You bet I am. I have found your videos very informative and precise. I have been building Harleys for nigh on 66 years. Yeah I’m 80 just turned. Any new bikes I have bought over the years were taken in for the initial service as per warranty crap and after that were serviced by myself, I was a Fitter/Turner in the engineering industry in the UK so knew how to use tools. I think the majority of bike owners tend to do their own servicing to give peace of mind when riding said bike and prefer to be in control of what gets done to their bikes and when. I bought a brake fluid tester which more or less tells you when you have to renew the hydraulic fluids and found you could go well over the recommended periods by a considerable margin but thought it prudent to go with the service routine to be on the safe side. All of the other safety checks etc can be found in a decent workshop manual which can usually be bought for any motorcycle for a very reasonable cost. Thanks for your video showing how dealerships could possibly be overcharging for basic service work, maybe the labour time included their lunch/toilet breaks etc.
@JodyridesАй бұрын
I didn’t watch the video, I no longer have a Honda Goldwing. But the headline made me go right to comments. When I got my Goldwing used with 13 K miles on it from the original owner, it was 16 years old, and still had the original tires on it. The clutch and brake fluids were never changed, the coolant was never changed, it was never parked on the center stand so the springs were sacked out in the suspension, the air filter had never been changed. back in the 70s I was a motorcycle mechanic at three different dealerships. I left that occupation because it was too seasonal here in Pennsylvania, I went to be when I was trained for. but when I went on the Internet, after getting my Goldwing in 2018, I saw stories on there in videos of people that were happy they just got their Goldwing from the dealer, and one owner had his oil changed, a new air filter installed, oil filter , and spark plugs installed. He was pleased did it cost him $1100. I once worked for a Yamaha dealer, and a customer brought a motorcycle in that we had been given to him. It’s sat outside for two years, it was a Yamaha RD 200 with electric start. It needed a lot, chain was very rusty, battery, it needed the carbs to be cleaned, the engine was rusted solid, so it needed new pistons rings, head gaskets first over pistons, the fuel tank cleaned out, it needed a lot. The estimate when I was given the work order was something around $800 back in the mid-1970s. Coincidentally at that time, Yamaha was running a nationwide ad on the back of one of the big motorcycle magazines at the time that you could buy a brand new leftover Yamaha RD 200 for $595. They were two-year-old brand new leftovers. I approached the owner of the shop and told him that we should suggest that the owner just buy a brand new bike instead of pouring money into that bike that still gonna look old after I replace all of the stuff that was in need of replacing on it .. The owner sat back in his chair with a little smile on his face, and he said these words that I never forgot . “ Jody- The more it hurts, the more they love it..” well, that was perfectly evident when I saw that goldwing i bought or was thrilled with his $1100 bill for what amounted to what I thought was just a few hours work at the most. SO- when I started work on my new to me, Goldwing, I was lucky that I had the Ginuwine Honda service manual. That was about 2 inches thick, because I had never worked on a Goldwing before. in doing research, I found that the dealers charge five hours labor alone to change the air filter on the 2000one through 2017 GL 1800 gold wings. I scarfed her dad thinking, that is ridiculous. .. that was until I did the job myself. Going by the thick Honda service manual, I had to start by removing the plastic around the dashboard, gauges, and methodically work towards the sheet, removing panels, lots of little fasteners, plastic, rivets, long strips of plastic between the main cover and the side panels., I had to keep track of all the screws by poking holes in a large piece of cardboard and labeling them so they went back where they came from because many of them were completely different sizes to the other ones, taking my time, keeping track inventing ways to keep track of all those different fasteners, it took me almost 6 hours, just to change the air filter. That completely changed my mind about what the dealers charge to change the air filter. that is a five hour job for a fast mechanic that has done it many times. The problem is, labor is now $125 an hour and higher.. $625 just to change the air filter, Plus parts, plus shop materials, plus disposal fee, plus tax so let’s just round it off at $700 including the air filter every 10,000 miles OK? That’s actually realistic. Even if a fast mechanic could change the air filter and putting it back up in only three hours, they’re still going to charge you for the full flat rate manual time. That’s all dealers make money. They don’t make money selling new bikes., They don’t make money selling parts and accessories. They make money in the service department. Money they make selling new bikes, pays the interest on the brand new bikes that haven’t sold yet, the money they make in the parts department pays for their insurance, utilities, salaries, expenses, taxes, but if you don’t give the bikes away, figuratively speaking, you’re not gonna sell parts and accessories, and if you don’t sell parts and accessories. and motorcycles, you’re not gonna have service business. And that’s where the cash is rolling in. Service department. That is the goose that lays the golden eggs at car and motorcycle dealerships. OK so let’s say it’s $700 to change the air filter including the air filter at a Honda dealership which is about right and let’s say you change your air filter every 10,000 miles which is about right unless you live in a very dusty place and goldwing buyer?? known for going way over 100,000 miles relatively trouble free. So let’s just say 100,000 miles in 10 air filter changes later. That’s $7000 you spent just on air filter changes. that is not counting oil changes including the oil filter, that’s not including fresh tires every 12,000 miles or so, that’s not including changing the brake and clutch fluid and final drive fluid, flushing the coolant and replacing it with fresh aluminum compatible fluid, that’s not removing the drive shaft to lube the splines every so many years, call me that’s not spending money on having accessories installed at the dealer, that’s not paying the dealer to replace the spark plugs, or brake pads, or add lighting, or possible electronics added by the dealer. That is $7000 just to have your dealer replace 10 air filters over a 100,000 mile schedule.. so I am not shocked at all to see the headline of this video that it cost that many thousands of dollars in the service department to work on a Goldwing. Because that is the only reason I got rid of my Goldwing. As perfect as it was, and it was perfect, it was the smoothest motorcycle I have ever ridden. it shifted better than any suzuki I ever Road, the brakes were better than on my BMW, K 1200 LT, which would put you over the bars with two fingers if you weren’t careful. it weighed almost 900 pounds, but the weight disappeared. Once you were rolling, it had more power than I could ever use ever. But the reason I sold my Goldwing, was because I didn’t wanna work on it again after doing the long list of things I had assumed were neglected. like all fluids, I change the fork and shock spring, I change the front fork, bushings and seals. Call my changed the spark plugs, the air filter, I installed a Ginuwine Honda new windshield with a vent built-in. Doing that work like changing the rear shock, spring, following the Ginuwine Honda service manual. to get the rear shock off, I had to start at the dashboard again, just like with the air filter and remove the plastic around the gauges, that was to get to the rear shock, removing all the plastic and the seat in the battery, and even the large gas tank shaped like a child’s coffin under the seat, blocking access to the top bolt on the shock absorber. When I saw that, and when I saw how difficult it is to get at the air filter.. I sold the gold wing as perfect as it was. The thought of having to do a roadside repair when I’m 1000 miles from home, that was enough for me, and that’s why the headline of this video doesn’t surprise me one bit, that’s not blaming the dealer for shaking the customers by the ankles, that is how difficult they are to work on, it’s not that it’s difficult, it’s just that it’s dozens and dozens of little jobs. and all that beautiful plastic that fits together like the pyramids, you have to pay somebody about $125 an hour to remove all that plastic. When I was working on my machine, I have plastic and parts in my game room on the pool table, on the ground beside the pool table in the game room, I had some in the back of my truck, I had cardboard index boxes with holes in them for every screw and I labeled each. screw and fastener and plastic rivet, which I ended up losing two of those rivets, and when I went to the Honda dealer to get new ones, the Partman could not find any such part in the parts book. Never heard of them. Those two plastic rivets fell down somewhere in the motor area or in the vicinity of the airbox, they might as well have gone straight to China, because I never saw them again… that Goldwing was a very good handling machine very comfortable, never at a lack of power, started instantly, shifted perfectly, it was as smooth as glass once underway, but the thought of having to work on it, that was too much, and I’m certainly not gonna pay somebody to do work that I can do, but refused to do again. I suppose the answer is, to just make enough money that it doesn’t bother you to pay 1000 or $2000 service bill for having the oil and the air filter changed and a few little trinkets added to your machine cars and motorcycles are suffering from the same technological revolution for the past 20 years, they’re getting to the point where you have to marry the dealer for service work . i’m seeing a lot of chatter on the Internet here in November 2024 that there may be a very large recall to replace some type of a hardened bolt that could end up flying around in the transmission causing catastrophic damage. With the number of dealers that are left still in business, which ain’t too many. That’s a problem. I feel bad for Honda and the Honda owners for this bolt problem. Honda designed a perfect machine, but they didn’t make the bolt that is failing into many machines. That came from a parts supplier, that is not Hondas fault, but it is Hondas problem.

The Handly really sucked in 2019 I paid $208.00 each for new Forks then had to pay $650 for new Ohlin Fork Cartridges.. I have purchased a new K-tech shock too. Sports bike tires have a soft compound .. I ran a Michille to the steel cords in 8,500 miles.. Some guys put car tires on the rear of the Gold wing to triple the milage. but the bead angles differ from the Motorcycle wheel to the car tire thus they are not really recommended. Plus motorcycle are rounded so you still have rubber on the ground at a lean angle. My local Power Sports Dealer changes $149.00 My Local Harley Dealer closed December 2023. This is why i purchased a 2016 Moto Guzzi 1400 Eldorado. Very easy to service. I check and or adjust the valves at every oil change. Compared to other modern motorcycles, it's a joy to service. One thing that simplified valve adjusting is this bike has cylinders that stick out the side making for easy access. The valve adjusters are screw and lock type. Most modern motorcycles have a shim under bucket type adjustments meaning if you have to adjust the valves, you have to take out the cams to remove the shims! In my opinion, the con's do not outweigh the pro's. Shim under buckets have longer service intervals before adjustment. Unless you adjust them yourself, prepare to pay through the nose$$$:) Your video's are of great help!

Motorcycle "stealerships" are as prominent as auto stealerships. I am lucky to have an independent guy that worked at a Honda/Yamaha shop for 35 years as the lead tech that is local to me. He never upcharges people and is straight about what is really needed. IE: coolent changes, why can cars go 100k/10years now and bikes need done every few years??? He knows it's not needed as often as dealers say it does. I agree with the comment to mark parts to see if they actually do the work. Sad we need to do that now. I ask for the used parts back. I have the 2018 that had the fuel pump recall done and decided to sit and wait on it. I could see the tech doing the work through the door. Next up is that bolt that seems to self destruct. Hope to get it done this winter during the off season.

I just did the 4k oil change on my 2023 last week. I have a non-DCT model, so don't have the extra filter, but it took me less than an hour to do the change and that was with me fiddling around with a couple of other things in the process. At say $100/hr in labor costs, there is no way that it took professionals 4 hours to do this job. Name the dealer, so that the world knows what a scam they are!

I have completed all my services on my 2024 wing myself, currently I’m at 10k. Yes I did take the bike in for warranty recalls. Using the manual and common sense I do my own maintenance for the most part. Not sure if I want to do an air filter change on this bike. Not because I can’t or because I don’t have the tools but I don’t really have the desire. I also installed every accessory on the bike which is a very long list. I did work for a Honda when I was a kid (18), which was 51 years ago. What I did was assemble new bikes out of the crates which included Honda, Indian, Moto Guzzi, BSA, and Hodaka. The dealer was the largest in the south east in the 60’s and 70’s so assembling was my only job every day. I do think a lot of people just don’t have the desire to do their own maintenance but in this day and time most don’t have the common sense, tools, space or knowledge.

My Honda Shadow owners manual covers oil change chain adjustment ( it is a VLX600), sparkplug changing, coolant flush, air filter, and battery. And the Honda owners manual for my 2001 cr250r detail engine and suspension tear downs. Both manuals even list what tools to use. My cr250r is a 2001 and the shadow is a 2002 but I bought them at the same time in 2002. $561 for labor is crazy. Of my two bikes the only one that goes to a shop is the shadow for tire replacement only. A small shop near me includes tire mounting with tire purchase. For 23 years I have used Valvoline 10w-40 4 stroke motorcycle oil in the cr250r transmission and the shadow 600 and never had a problem. The cr250r gets golden spectrum for its premix and both bikes are fueled with alcohol free gasoline.

My Harley had to go into the dealer for a engine rebuild under warranty, new heads, cylinders and pistons. Just before it went in I had just done an oil and filter change. When I picked it up I was shocked to see they had NOT changed the oil filter, I know they hadn't as I use K&N oil filters and there was still one on there, they would have fitted a HD one if they had changed it!
@mikeskidmore6754Ай бұрын
After a REbuild like that, you should change the oil after 500 - 800 miles. I hope they didn't drop sand and grit into the motor while working on it
@paineys3341Ай бұрын
@@mikeskidmore6754 I know, I was expecting a full oil and filter change after that rebuild, they couldn't argue with me saying they had changed the filter as no Harley dealer uses a K&N filter on oil changes. I got 150 miles up the road after picking it up and had a big pool of oil in my engine cases, I managed to get back to the dealer before closing and left the bike with them to sort it out! Next day they told me they found the problem, one of the o-rings on the pushrod tubes had failed... WTF...it didn't fail, it wasn't installed correctly.... 1000 miles later it went back in again as I had an oil smear on my bags, this time it was a rocker box gasket had failed....nope, install error again.... final fault, I was riding in the rain and the bike was missing and firing on one cylinder, I fixed it this time, front plug cap split so shorting when rode in the rain, they would not accept liability for it, I said it was fine before YOUR tech pulled it apart, would never have engine work done there again!

Totally agree with what's being said. I've always said that the biggest scam dealers do is the 'valve clearance' inspection. A vfr800 for example will cost around 1200gbp for a inspection of the valve clearances, an inspection. Someone to access the valve buckets and measure the gap between the cam and the bucket. If it's out they will fit shims to put them back in +which is extra). So that's 1200 for labour. Now, there's no way of checking if they have actually done the work unless you remove everything and do it yourself. Valves are pretty simple and your engine will let you know if the valves are loose or tight (you can Google symptoms) but you can ask pretty much any honest technician that's done the job and they will tell you only a very very small amount of valves go out of tolerance, the dealers know this but insist you get it done every 16k miles. It's an absolute scam.
@donaldfraser3607Ай бұрын
Honda flat rate on that job is 8 hours and when I was twisting wrenches I told the customers to not bother if the bike starts well and is not noisy. Most shim under bucket DOHC valve trains should never need anything.

That brake fluid flush really got me. I had to hand pump my front brakes and the same for my rear brakes to flush the brake oil. I had no clue how to do it since it was my first time. I think I spent maybe 30 minutes but not more than a hour. Dealership are destroying their own business by over charging. If the total labor charge was around 150 dollars I say ok, but not at that price. I watched a Harley Davidson dealership video going into detail all they do on Mile inspection and all the things they check during an oil change. It was a little high but very reasonable for the detailed checks they actually were doing. I do not have a GoldWing, but just doing a few things on your own would pay for your videos

I can understand the 5.5 quarts of oil charge. When I bought my new 2023 DCT, the oil was only halfway between the hash marks on the dip stick. I will generally pay for the very first oil change on any bike. After that, I'm doing it myself. That being said I'm pretty sure I'm doing all the oil changes on my next Goldwing. I've also purchased a Rabaconda and stopped paying for overpriced tires and change costs. My K1600GTL was due for it's 6k maintenance. The local shop quoted me $400 for that service...and by the way you need tires which will cost $800 plus disposal and fees. (I was in getting the battery replaced under warranty so asked about the service and that's when they told me I needed tires also. They weren't wrong, but I wanted to know the price.) I looked up the 6k service in the book. It's an oil change and filter only. (Check other items.) As luck would have it I can use the same oil in the Goldwing and the K1600. I bought a filter for $20 and had five quarts of full synthetic JASO-MA2 oil which cost around $25. I saved over $350 on that service. I then ordered the Michelin Road 6 GT tires delivered for $530 and changed them myself. Those ZR tires are tough and it took me an afternoon, but saved over $250. That's over $600 saved in one visit to the shop. Oh, and I changed the final drive fluid....it uses the same as the Goldwing also. 200ml of fluid I already had and an extra 5 minutes because I had the rear tire off already. They wanted $300 for that service and I did it basically for free. I think most of these shops are pricing themselves out of work. I won't even take my cars in any more. The free oil changes on our new vehicle cost over $100. (That's another fight I had with the stealership.)

When I confronted the tech, he stated the brake fluid was still dirty because it’s ABS. I informed him that I have a fluid tester in the moisture was greater than 5%.

@@alfonsodennis8450 The ABS system has no impact on the fluid or moisture. Your tech was scamming you. And yes, my videos show flush/bleed on ABS brakes.

@@cruisemansgarageThank you Cruiseman. I change my oil, differential fluid and antifreeze. I am always afraid to do the brake fluid, not wanting to get air in the lines. I also want to change the fork seals and fluid but don’t want to take the bike to a shop just to let the bike sit and they collect $600+ and not do the work.

Not sure if I missed it but is there a labor rate anywhere or is it just "secret"? Still...crazy!!!! You certainly made a good pitch on your maintenance vids.

That was not on the invoice. Good question.

I don't even know how you can take an hour to do an oil change. I do all my bikes in like 30 minutes and that's taking the plug out then wandering off to do something else while it drains, coming back later and switching the filter and refilling.
