An Abandoned Loco Shed Explore

We had a few hours spare so decided to go check out an old Loco shed on the Banvury and Cheltenham Direct Railway. It made a nice change to explore just one small area, as we often miss little gems of long forgotten railway architecture like this.

Great idea. Also, as the old line leaves Hooky there are the remains of the old viaduct, you can see the tall supporting pillars from the road but the actual viaduct is long gone. Must've been spectacular back in the day.

Great video as usual. If you want to find out more about the ironstone quarry I'd recommend the book "The Ironstone Quarries of the Midlands. History, Operation and Railways. Part Two, The Oxfordshire Field" ISBN:9 781907 094019. The book states the Quarry opened in 1918 as a wartime drive. The engine shed is the second, the original being of a wooden construction. The quarry itself closed in 1929 after a few years of intermittent use.

Not all urban explorers break in to places the ones i watch enter by an open door and as for trespassing if your on private land as long as you leave there's nothing they can do the law has changed so much on this love the videos keep them coming you 2

Another good explore, Paul and Rebecca. An explore I did a few years ago was Moniave Station, on the old Cairn Valley Light Railway. It is the only surviving Glasgow and South Western Railway country station. It's in very poor condition, I didn't venture inside, but the old cast iron fireplace was still there, along with the ticket window. I was camping near it whilst attending a motorcycle rally.

I guess that these days with the dreaded H & S they would have to be careful not to encourage others to do anything even slightly risky! Mind you, having said that, I cringe at the risks that The Bearded Explorer takes. (Do you subscribe to his channel too? If not, I recommend it.)

Brilliant video! I love lost feel to in engine shed and how the inspection pits haven't been filled in. The fuse ending was interesting to. I've come across a number of unofficial paths which don't show on OS maps, especially around old railways and in country estates.

Just walk on it anyway unless a private - keep out sign, security fence or someone stops you. If there is nothing there, just walk.

When you cover this line, the chipping Norton section is a great part of the line generally. The Chipping Norton Tunnel is wonderful if its able to get into (the chain wasnt actually attached last time) and theres still a surviving stable shed amongst the Station Road Industrial estate in Chipping Norton on the site of the old station. Well worth seeing 👍

Very good as usual. I commented a while back when you were both up at saughtree b&b, and low & behold a coupla weeks later you were stood on the viaduct in my home village of Stamford Bridge. Spooky. I walk that viaduct at least twice a day. How i never saw you, only god knows! Keep up the quality clips.

The quarry is the bloxham and whiston quarry. There were 4 locos here. For more information see ironstone quarries of the midlands vol 2, oxfordshire field by Eric Tonks. The name of the man who built the shed is given. Great that you found the shed . Great video.

That shed !!!! like a leviathan asleep in the woods, that angle you got of it, it looked really imposing, It looks well past restoration now, how unfortunate😞 The private land "debate" hmmm !? Just a quickie... On a normal day (I'm a courier) I'll get just over an hour break between delivering and afternoon collections. I park up on a "private" road. I park up, have my butties, cause no disturbance whatsoever. Yet I've seen walkers, mountain bikers, dog walkers, you name it up there. One day a bit ago this guy in a 4x4 pulls along side my van giving me the private road and we live here palava. I said "do you stop the horse riders, walkers etc" His reply was "we payed a lot for this tarmac" then drove on 😂 Hooves you need to be after 😂 Sorry I went on but I mean there's such a grey area, I thought styles/stys are an invite

We think it's the local farmer. Uses to use it for storage until it became unsafe.

The railway embankment at Bourton on the Water is worth a visit. Go up Mousetrap Lane and turn left, walk up the path. You really get a sense of the old line. My family used to live in Wright's Cottage on that lane, and had fond memories of the steam trains on the line.

Next time you are there follow the quarry tramway a bit further until it becomes an embankment with a stream at the bottom. On the right as you head away from the main line towards the quarries you can see a building at the bottom of the the embankment. This building used to house a water pump that pumped water up to the main line for the lcomotives.

Wth the current resurgence in canal revival to working order, are your videos lodged with any historical bodies? With so many of the now historical train - lines/sheds/viaducts/bridges tunnels in relatively good condition ,tho some on private land are they could they be bought back to life say enough for more cycle /walkways- is this already been done? you are both to be commended for making aware to the general populus of the UK a truly historical heritage well done keep it up.

Great find. I just love visiting old railway sites and it's amazing to find old buildings still standing. I recently visited an abandoned shed in France stuck in the middle of a forest. It's a 13-road roundhouse with repair shed and turntable pit. It's been closed for at least 50 years but still in amazing condition. For anyone interested, go to 'www.géoportail.gouv.fr' and choose "Bénestroff" as location. The page opens with a photo over the station. Move to the brown rectangular terrain just to the west and look just above it. Zoom in on the sickle-shaped object. This is the shed. There are also a couple of videos on YT showing the shed.

May I suggest an old abandoned line that you may find of Interested to explore ? It's the old Crewe to Telford railway line that went via Nantwich using the current Crewe to Shrewsbury line. It spured off just after crossing the river weaver on the west side of Nantwich before then heading South via Audlem and Market Drayton. There is very much of the line architecture still visible, the old line bed is still clearly visable via Google maps. Regards Jason.

Hook norton actually has 2 viaducts and one tunnel on the line u could spend a whole day filming there if u cover all the narrow gauge railways one engine sheds is still there in a private residence also the narrow gauge tunnel under the main road when u go to bloxham make sure u look out for Dr Hydes foot bridge on the the waste land right next to the petrol station

Oh and please do Louth to Barndey in Lincolnshire it is a fascinating line from the sugar factory to the Louth canal and I would love to find out more about the South Willingham tunnel as it has about 5 species of bats taking refuge in there. The station in Louth is now houses but it is still there.

There is no 'Right To Roam' in England outside of certain special areas such as Dartmoor. Unless there is a Public Footpath - you are trespassing. It's that simple. You really need a large-scale map to be sure too. The 1.25" to the mile are pretty useless. Unless walkers are already very familiar with an established path - a decent map is essential.

Since you started your quest, have there been any stations that were in use which have now become disused (or, I suppose the other way around - un-used that have been recommissioned)? I can only think of one station, well... platform, that re-opened which is at Ashton Gate by the Bristol City Stadium.

There is a right to roam but I can't remember the limitations, but if you are doing no damage or littering then there should be no problem. That said I know how you feel!

The Right to Roam Laws answer your question. Open land whether private or public is normally okay if you don't do any damage like lighting a fire. However woodland is more complex as privately owned woods are a commercial venture. If footpaths are in place then you may keep to those but I have a friend who has a footpath in ... yes in... his back garden and he is not keen on people coming to look in his windows. Might be worth a Google.

Yes, they do miss loads, are too hesitant to go to some places and they don't talk about the history or when/why a line closed half the time or even show old photos.

Access to land. I do voluntary work helping maintain public rights of way in my village in North East Worcestershire. If you are on private land the landowner can only ask you to leave. They should be civil about it but I wouldn't take the chance. If there are private notices these should be respected. Throughout the country there is a lot of land which public access without having rights (particularly dog walkers). Local knowledge is key here.If you don't know the area it is best not access it. At worst there could be hidden hazards or shooting going on. The reason all rights of way exist is that they were used historically. You will seer a lot around country churches. Before cars this is how people got to church. If a path is used enough you can apply for it to become a right of way. The landowner can't close or divert a path without going through proper procedures. The Secretary of State must agree to one being closed. One interesting point. If a landowner diverts a path unofficially it is possible that the new path will become a new right of way whilst the existing one remains.

I do urban exploring but I don't break in to buildings if you are filming your explore and taken pics on a plot of land with a abandon house its a civil trespassing law and you can do it as its not the angst the law

Access and trespass is a very confusing section of law, the presence of the stile is a tacit invitation to enter , there is no sign present removing that invitation so I don't think it actually trespassing see it like walking up to someones front door to knock. If I remember correctly even OS maps do not show definitive rights of way See its clear as mud

Scotland has very different trespass laws to England, generally much less restrictive.

In Wales we have a right to roam, but only in restricted areas. "Open access" . but being wales (I.e Not thought through) some of them are islands on private lands - I.e no footpaths/roads to them.

I used to do a lot of walking in the New Forest and Dorset...you find quite a few "Private" signs out and about, mostly put up by landowners wanting to keep people out...although many of them had no right to stop walkers crossing their land as there was a right of way......use a bit of common sense. try to avoid barbed wire and big dogs...... and bulls and electric fences and...…..
