You are literally reviewing a sharpener I have used for 3 years. I have not watched yet, so I'll come back with my opinion. I sharpen for money, not a full blown business, but I have friends in the industry that asked me to save them some money on sharpening, so Ive been doing that for 2 years. Everyone is happy. I personally love it. I will say, the stones it came with are long gone. Edit, at 3:58, all of those screws maneuvers you talked about are what everyone does, so Im glad someone clued you in. I moved the limiter to the top, but mine never came with a thumbscrew for the pivot, all are allen keyed. Edit, those diamond stones are garbage, the adhesive will fail on them. Ive had to hot glue every single one back together over time. And the grits are off. Edit, those diamond stones are supposed to be used on a scrap piece of metal to remove the excess at first. What you saw happen is exactly what is supposed to. I bitched that they are garbage that they fall apart, but they do work well after some teething. Last edit. I have the model on up from that one. Mine was $59. I never expected the stones to be quality so that was expected. I think I spent $60 for my diamond set and $80 for the wet stones which was well worth it. My handle has never failed, though it is different from that one. That middle screw is really important for angled spines.

You seem to know alot about this precision sharpener. That said, I've a question. I'm lookin into a set of diamond stones or high quality whetstones. Lookin at a set of each for roughly $50, with grits 80-3000 about 10 stones a set. Are these good quality or do I need to look higher? I have seen some individual stones priced at about $10-$30 a stone.

The diamond stones I received were cheap. The low grits quickly lost their grit and cut very poorly compared my other diamond stones. They were garbage and that's where they went. If you've made this sharpener work for 3 years more power to you.

@@GreenBeetle Why come off like a tool for no reason? I don't own this thing, I don't have a dog in this fight and don't have an interest in it other than the general curiosity having seen it everywhere on Amazon. The guy said that the included stones were long gone and I didn't see anywhere in his comment him touting their "amazing" quality while rushing to their defense. But if the unit works particularly after replacing the stones with once a decent quality why would he need more power to him to work with it? And why does your tone come off kind of butthurt? It's very weird.. Anyway, thanks for the video, I'm not going to thank you for the butt hurt comment though.

Great review. I bought this kit for the price $38 as my Lansky is falling apart. My kit came with an upgrade, instead of a plastic rod bearing mine is metal. I agree with everything you had to say. The stones are bad, sluffing and in no way accurately marked. Thanks for the tip on the TSPROF stones. I am going to get a set.

Really useful video, thanks. I've had mine for probably a year now, and I'm using it on my knives only once a month. I find the best system for me is to use 2 chef's honing steel (a chef one and a butcher's fine one), after that I finish with a very fine water stone and a quick strop on an old leather belt. One thing to be careful of is to sharpen your knife the full length of your blade, other than that, it's a very useful addition to my kitchen.

I used to use my grandfathers sharpening stone, he used for a scythe to maintain the lawn with, and you could sharpen a knife beautifully with that. If I had a chance to get that back, I'd prefer that over some cheap set. Still, it's good have a pro opinion on these things. Thanks.

I got one of these at Christmas. Think this is a pretty fair review. The stones I got with mine where pretty garbage. Got about 8 knives sharpened before the first stone snapped. Rest were very worn and lots of slurry. They did get the knives sharp though and I tried on a small wood carving knife up to larger chef knives and all held in great. I haven't used it a ton as I need new stones but for me it seems good enough (for the price) and could be tweaked to make it a bit more solid. For someone like me that makes a few knives a years as a hobby it does the job just fine and was quicker and easier then a DIY solution. Also easier to get consistent edges over doing it with just stones (again for someone that isn't doing it all the time).

I ordered mine from AliExpress in December and received it in early May (about 2 weeks ago at time of writing.) My unit has a metal bearing and all metal parts except for the handle which, so far after 10 carbon and molybdenum steel knives, is holding up well. I'm happy to learn that higher quality stones will fit because I enjoy this sharpener so much. I have some Chinese style cleavers that I struggle to sharpen because muscle memory wants to default to a lower angle of sharpening and this tool solved the problem, as well as cutting a big chunk of time off the process.

I guess it all depends what version you receive. 5 or the 7 stones I got are the same color - be careful of which one is next. like you said the stones have a short life span. On kitchen knives it worked well - BUT - if you going to sharpen a small pocketknife - good luck, it's difficult to position. Also, I used a Lansky and could bring the edge to a mirror shine, but even using a strop I could not get the shine. Enjoyed your information about replacement stones.

Even dmt stones feel smoother immediately after the first sharpening, then they lose grit much slower over a period of time. Very similar to my work sharp except those stones just dulled over a quicker period of time than dmt stones. I’ve honestly been impressed by cheap diamond stones many time although they will last you around 50 sharpening before they must be replaced in my experience

I had one. I have used CNC machinig stuff as well. The whetstones are a joke, but easyly updateable whit diamond stones. And the structure couldn´t be better with less,😂 I´ve learned the same I learnt in Moto GP (PC): "everybody can accelerate in the straight line, many can manage the turn. And just a few control the angle all along the turn.

I went up to 1500grit, but when I test it by cutting a letter paper, the cut have jagged edges (paper fibres showing, instead of a smooth cut), I wonder does that mean I should go higher grits or sand more with the 1500? Also, I found the angle is not maintained consistent between stones because of their uneven thicknesses (worn out or manufacture error), so sometimes the finer grits are not working on the very edge but where the edge and side join...

How did you get on with it and which stones did you purchase? I bought a set of diamond stones for $40 and although I’ve only sharpened 10 knives I’m very happy with the results I’m getting and the speed that I’m achieving. I did the same with the handle coz it feels more comfortable and ergonomic that way.

@@SoggyBottomForgeJoe Yep, the higher-grit stones seem to last longer but my 2 lower-grit stones were getting perilously thin before my diamond stones arrived. So thin in fact that I took my Lansky with me just in case I needed it. I think I must have sharpened 50+ knives at the Foodbank where I volunteer so yours will probably last a while if you're just using it for your domestic needs. When you do need to replace them you'll be surprised how quickly the diamonds cut. I've got a set of 10 stones, 2 of the coarsest ones don't get much use and I use 6 of the remainder up to 3k to get a razor edge. Once the first burr is established with the 200 or 400 grit it only takes 2 passes on each side with subsequent stones to do the rest. I've only sharpened 12-15 knives with the diamond stones since they arrived so can't attest to their longevity yet though.

I made the mistake of buying this kit; however, through Amazon. Even purchased extra stones. Yeppers, customer service doesn't exist. Two of my stones that came with kit were broken. Am pretty sure that these stones are held together with a flour and water paste. I managed to sharpen my chef knife and a boning knife. When holding the stones sideways, I could see a slight dip forming. Talk about slurry; unbelievable. Again, no customer service so I did the best thing for the kit. Took it away out back and shot the case several times to put it "down." Put remnants in small trash bag and Adios. Deeply disappointed, but I learned a lesson. Appreciate your video as it shows I am not the only one with a bad experience. Have a great weekend.

I have one of these. Seems they upgraded the bushing to metal vs. Plastic. I havent had any set screws coming loose, so thats a plus. But the stones dont hold very well with the spring. The handle doesnt seem to add tightness when pushing it down. The biggest gripe js the stones! First knife came out razor sharp, the second had issues, and took 3x as long. Like it wore the 1k grit to 10k. The arm that holds the stone on is held by not even half inch of shaft which is a concern, but hasnt caused any issues. Overall im happy with it. Consistent way to sharpen without ruining any expensive knives by havjng the wrong angle. I still need to finish my kitchen knife set, but im going to buy a good set of stones and should be good to go.

Try making the stones last longer by only drawing the sharpening stroke toward you. Every time you push it against the edge, the blade shaves the stones for you. Additionally, you also remove the small burr, which actually does the cutting.....

That ball looks like it might be teflon which would be a good material choice, maybe it's HDPE though which would still work for a while.

its clunky, sticks, catches and barely turns. if its teflon they wasted their money but yeah if it breaks its prob cheap to replace but in the meantime i don't think it functions as well as intended.

What’s the difference between this and the wasabi? I got the wasabi and, aside from the handle, none of it is plastic and it came with a few extra screws. The most difficult time I had was getting the angles right and then the slurry.. yikes. I know that’s wear and tear on the stone. I managed to get decent edges on a few knifes, good enough to cut whatever, I tried the paper thing and it catches and just tears the paper. The sharpened edge has little nubs? Coming off. I’m guessing a strop will take care of that? I have up to 1500, assume I need 2-3000 to get that razor shard edge. Overall I’m happy with it, it’s easy, kinda fun.. oh.. the lack of decent instructions is a let down. That’s why I’m here looking for advice/reviews etc.. I did contact them and they are quick to respond with websites etc to solve any issues I have.

1. DONT soak stones, a spray bottle with water to keep the working surface wet is all that's required. 2. Use slow motion and use the full length of the stone. Your sharpening like your sawing wood. It's for sharpening not cutting a bevel. You pre edge it on a Tormek or Grinder then smooth it out with this
@GreenBeetle
@GreenBeetle Жыл бұрын
Manufacturer instructions often direct water stones be soaked prior to use - I’ve seen up to 15 minutes. I take the manufacturers at their word. Stones often go down to 150-250 in grit and can be used for cutting or repair in that case. Also if a person is buying a $30 sharpener they likely do not already own a tormek or grinder.

Stones are crap. You must lock that holder in place. If it rotates as in vid the angle changes for the stone. I filed a flat grove on the axle. Made it stay in place. Plastic is better than metal against metal. I filed the holder for that plastic ball down some to get rid of that play. Just screw the holder apart and carefully file some off. Go for Venev stones, best ever. Holds a lifetime.

I'm trying to save money and still obtain decent quality stones for this system. The prices of the tsprof 5 piece diamond stones are now $90 instead of $50 in this video. Has anyone ever tried cutting up full size whetstones into 1×6in stones to use for these systems?
@jrhelgeson
@jrhelgeson Жыл бұрын
You’re moving the sharpening stone back and forth on the blade? You’re dulling it with every backstroke as you’re using the blade to shave off the whetstone. You’re supposed to do smooth long strokes from the tip of the knife down to the handle, pulling the stone out as you go.
@GreenBeetle
@GreenBeetle Жыл бұрын
You can push, pull or both on a stone. These types of systems are designed to go in both directions. The problem here is junk stones.

I start most stuff on the 2x72 and get it down to just under apex. Then I use 1 of 3 methods. Worksharp Ken Onion for convex edges or Arkansas stones followed by Shapton glass up to a very high polish or the Kazak Pro / TSProf to 5000 grit the latter being the most common way I sharpen stuff. Of the 3, I enjoy using the Arkansas stones the most but I’m not as proficient with them.

Those look more like polishing stones for injection molds. They are intentionally very soft so the stones do not damage features on the mold during polishing. Great for polishing, very poor for sharpening.

The only angle that matters is the angle between the sharpening stone and the knife! The angle between the clamp holder and the bench is not relevant.
