You know the basics about Stray Kids?
This guide delves deeper into their exceptional teamwork. It shows how the production process of 3Racha works, what role Lee Know plays as the Dance Leader, why Felix and Hyunjin are important as the Faces of the group, how Seungmin is dedicated to being Stray Kids' signature singing voice and why I.N. is their Joker Card.

Okay, like many of the other commenters, I'm genuinely distressed by the fact that this video isn't more well-known in the fandom. It's beautifully put together and it covers so many things that my friends and I have noted about the members (specifically about who they ARE, both in the dynamics of the group and as creators in general), but almost never see mentioned in other guides or even in comments. I honestly had to stop 20 minutes in to save and subscribe and to squee to my friends that I'd found a guide that genuinely captures the essence of Stray Kids. It's definitely my new go-to for introducing folks to the members beyond the bare basics. Thank you so, so much for this!

Thanks! 💚 I'm not too surprised it isn't well known. I made this channel mostly for this guide (most of the rest is just stuff I made to figure out how to use the editing software 🙈 ) and for other SKZ-related content I might make in the future. But I'm not very active on here and often forget to log into this account. The video gained significant traction since the Maxident release, though. It made me really happy to see that more people were getting curious about SKZ during the comeback. 😁

Thank you! 💚 I'm really grateful that they did this new iteration of 2Kids Room, where they gave so much insight into their current process, in addition to the Intro videos they make for each album. Plus, also especially to Bang Chan for doing album listens in Chan's Room after release, where he not only talks about what they did and how, but he also never fails to give recognition and credit to the people they collaborate with. ( 🤞I hope there'll be subtitles in English and other languages on the Maxident ones eventually, it would be a huge loss for people who don't understand Korean if the end of VLive would remove that). What I find the most impressive is how well they have covered all the bases, so they can afford to experiment and try out new and different things knowing it won't destabilise their core.

I liked this. It was such a good idea for a video because the teamwork is one of the things that stands out about Stray Kids and makes them so effective and prolific. Some of it was a bit confusing at first but it all made sense eventually. I liked the clips you chose, and I love that you credited everyone whose clips you used with information on how to get to them. You really illustrated the same concept of teamwork and respect that you were highlighting in Skz themselves. There were several clips I hadn't seen before, you've done a lot of research! I especially loved the clips of the other producers 3Racha has worked with. I loved that you highlighted how they collaborate with those producers, and there is mutual respect between 3Racha and those producers, engineers, all the behind scenes folk. I hadn't seen that Hot Sauce clip before, it was really telling how sincere he sounded with his respect for 3Racha. I've felt for a long time that this is one of the reasons they can be so incredibly productive--they have good relationships with their co-producers etc, who in turn are inspired to do their best for Skz. Two things I would have liked to have seen--one is how they use humor both among themselves and in their songs. Humor is a great way to build cohesion in a group. These guys laugh a lot together. They laugh at one another, with one another, and at themselves. They goof around, they play pranks, point out funny things to one another, they joke with their staff. They use many puns and a lot of wordplay in their lyrics, and they also have a musical sense of humor--things like using the sound of an elephant trumpeting, for certain notes in the background of the song Circus. Or using the sound of bedsprings squeaking and then someone pounding on the wall in Heyday. They used that humor also to connect with other groups in Kingdom, especially in the Mayfly segments, they use it to connect with their staff, with Stay, with interviewers, they use it to make it easier to talk about difficult things and to get through really brutal schedules. That humor is folded into the entire work process for them, and it helps make them very close. The second thing I would have loved to see you mention is that 3Racha have made deliberate efforts repeatedly to encourage all the members to participate in the writing/composition process, not just Hyunjin. You showed a few clips from Howl in Harmony, the songwriting camp series that they did. What I found most impressive from that series was that they put this "camp" together expressly to get the non-3Racha members to actively participate in writing, putting one 3Racha member in each group to guide them. Before that, there was a tiny mini series where they split into 4 duos and each of the duos made a song using the same very short little beat that Chan had prepared. That was I think in late 2019 or very early in 2020, not long after they became 8 members. All Skz members now have several copyright credits. Interestingly, someone posted a list of how many credits each non-3Racha has, Felix and Hyunjin at that time both topped the list with 17 each. I assume that is because Felix is credited for writing his own English rap lyrics, which he is doing more these days. But for me, this highlights how the group wants to pull everyone up to their highest possible level, encourage them to grow and stretch and do more, participate more. 3Racha are really good at what they do, and yet they are not saying, "Hey, let us do the writing and production, you just do your part". They are saying "Look, this is fun too, you can do this as well". That's a big part of their teamwork, sharing responsibility, sharing credit, encouraging growth. Thanks again for an interesting video!

Thank you! 💚 I actually got into Stray Kids in a bit of an unusual way, which explains a lot about this guide, I guess. While I have been listening to KPop casually since I got into KDramas in 2018 (for various reasons I ended up mostly listening to 2ond and early 3rd Gen artists), I never really got into any groups before this. I knew the names of some artists whose music I liked and some basics about the most popular groups on my list, but that was about it. (Most groups I preferred were either past their prime or on reduced capacity due to military service when I discovered them, or they had already disbanded, which probably also factors into why I didn't join any particular fandom. Newer groups only made it onto my playlist if I stumbled upon their songs by chance. I later discovered that I had a rather ecclectic selection of SKZ songs in my playlist all along, and I have no idea how they got there.) This changed in spring of this year, when a friend sent me a link to Maniac when it came out. The chorus of that song promptly got stuck in my head and remained there so persistently, that I needed to find out what about it made it so satisfying to listen to. Obviously, Felix' voice on the initial drop is an important factor, but that's not all there is to it. I eventually figured out that what really made it sound so good to me was the way all the different musical elements were carefully assembled and woven together to create that strong impact. If you listen closely, you realise that the first time the chorus drops, there are three different sources of bass sounds that are linked together: the melody Felix sings is more or less doubled by the line of the synth bass underneath it, and the lyrics are timed so that key words coincide with the rhythm of the bass drum, to gives them extra punch. As the song goes on, you realise that Felix' voice is mixed into the backing track each time they repeat the word "Maniac", so there are at least 3 different layers of bass every time "Maniac" comes up, and 4 when the lead vocal is performed by Felix or Hyunjin during the first half of the chorus. After I had figured this out (painfully slowly, because I'm not at all a music person and I needed to listen closely several times to distinguish the different layers), I was so impressed by the writing and production of that song, that I wanted to know who had made it. I wanted to check out more of their work... and that's when I found out about 3Racha, and 🤯 That's the entrance to this rabbit hole for me, because I really needed to know how they did it, if they had done it before (they have), and I also wanted to know who the other person credited on Maniac was (Versachoi. Before I watched Kingdom, he proved to be pretty elusive... I was really happy that they included him there and I now have a face to the name). As I delved deeper into how 3Racha produce music, how KPop is produced in general, and even how pop music has usually been made since the late 20th century for the global market, I just got more and more impressed by not just 3Racha, but Stray Kids as a group of artists and performers as a whole. It was surprisingly challenging to draw what I hope is a somewhat faithful and coherent picture of what they actually do, why 3Racha have as much control over their sound as they do, and how working with other people inside and outside of the group makes it possible for them to release quality music so frequently and consistently. I'm not sure how well I succeeded in showing the other parts, but one big revelation for me while I researched this, was how important it is to their overall process, that all the other members are reliably playing their parts on their own and often relatively independently, like e.g. how Seungmin has been working on his vocals and I.N. has reflected on his vocal tone and how to integrate it into the group sound. There is obviously always more that could be said about any aspect than can fit into a guide. It is true that 3Racha have built such a solid production system among themselves, that it appears to be very easy for them to meet new collaborators where they are at and integrate them into their process, like they did with the Mayfly rap unit or the trainees on team JYP that features on Back Door (Loud Version) during the JYP vs. PNation survival show last year. The guy from Hot Sauce in the interview I featured actually goes on to praise Bang Chan's way of keeping track of the overall vision they are going for with each track, but I decided not to include it here, because it would be more fitting in a segment going into more detail on leadership styles within the group. I included the part about Hyunjin's interest in song writing, because from what was known when I made the guide (and I think it still holds true as of when I'm writing this), he is more dedicated to work on his own songs, than the other non-3Racha members. I cut it out for time, but in that segment of Howl in Harmony where he talks about his experience with writing songs, Hyunjin plays snippets of several demos he was working on by himself or with Bang Chan at the time. Since I made the guide, he has released ice.cream, and has talked about how he sketched out the first draft for what eventually became Taste on his own, before getting the rest of Danceracha involved, and eventually Bang Chan and Versachoi. For now, I think it's fair to say that Hyunjin is the most interested in songwriting outside of 3Racha and the one who has been the most serious about it, given what we know he has been working on. This could change, though, if any of the other members came forward with song writing projects or collaborations, that we might be unaware of right now. I.N. recently mentioned wanting to produce another song after Maknae on Top, and unless they were talking about Can't Stop or the cover that he has released in September, they might have hinted at something in the works during a couple of SKZ Talker Go episodes from their US tour... we'll find out eventually I guess 😅 But all of this also happend after I made the video. It is certainly true that 3Racha have been encouraging and supportive of other members' song writing and producing projects. But I'm personally also glad that there doesn't seem to be any particular pressure for them to make their own songs outside of unit tracks on the albums, unless they choose to. Even though the video is so long, it barely manages to scratch the surface... as me rambling on in the comments clearly demonstrates 😅

@@savagekingz1678 Great information here. I do understand what you are saying about Hyunjin, he does actively seek out ways to be creative in everything he does. I think my point was that 3Racha really encourage, almost push all the members to get involved in the writing process, and that creates a different sort of teamwork and group dynamic. Even when the various members are not so interested in composing etc., I do think that this gives them all more confidence and a deeper understanding of the music, and creates the type of atmosphere where each member is comfortable contributing suggestions or feedback at various stages. This level of involvement also leads to an intimacy with the music that helps their dance and performance. For instance, there was that recent segment of Chan's Room where Lee Know asked Chan to make an EDM version of I Can't Live Without Changbin, and proceeded to direct Chan very specifically on what he wanted and how it should be put together. Of course that was a "just for fun" sort of thing, but it gives a sense of the sorts of interactions that go on between members--Chan did not seem surprised or taken aback, and Lee Know knew exactly what he wanted and how to convey that to Chan, in a way that indicates that members talk about the music making process often. You can see this starting back in 2020 with 2 Kid's Song. You are right, in that Hyunjin was already actively writing music, while IN, Seungmin, Lee Know and Felix were all pretty reluctant and sort of timid. And it is interesting to watch how 3Racha just won't accept this reluctance. Nope, you're gonna start composing whether you want to or not. I can't help thinking that this has been part of what has been making their music so creative these days.

Thank you! It did take a lot of work, this one in particular, but it was fun to edit and I'm happy that it is appreciated 😁 I would do some things differently now, if I made it again, but I guess that's inevitable after 6 months. The OG Hip-Hop connection was actually one of the reasons why I decided to sit down and make this guide instead of just talking about it to my friends all the time. I kept seeing people getting confused that Chan almost never raps on Stray Kids tracks, when he supposedly started out as a rapper in 3Racha alongside Changbin and Han. Meanwhile, I was here, internally screaming... but he is the DJ! Why do you expect him to rap? It isn't unusual that a DJ doesn't rap! I'm European and I obviously grew up far away from any of the birthplaces of Hip-Hop, but I was around when this type of music started to cross over from America, and there were a lot of magazine articles and radio/tv features explaining it in the late 80s and early 90s. There were a lot of people back then, who only talked about this strange new "rap music", and they usually thought all you needed to make a "rap song" was having a person speak rhythmically over a piece of music instead of singing that same verse, like they usually would in a pop song. Many pop and rock artists tried to retroactively claim that they were the first rapper in their European country, because they talked instead of sang on a song in the 70s or something. 🙈 I think one guy even tried to call himself the first rapper of his country (I forgot which one) for recording a radio commercial where he talked rapidly over a jingle in the early 80s. 🤦 So, back then, if you were genuinely interested in Hip-Hop as a subculture instead of just seeing "rap music" as a weird novelty, you had to know about MCing, DJing, Breakdance, and Grafitti. At that time, there was still a lot of live mixing with actual turntables going on. What really made me do a double take was when I realised that some people thought I was disrespecting Bang Chan by calling him "only" a DJ, instead of a rapper in 3Racha, as if being a DJ was somehow second-rate compared to rapping in a Hip-Hop crew, which couldn't be farther from the truth. Seeing "Prod. by CB97" on their 3Racha album covers really made it click for me, that they were not 3 rappers, but (style-wise) an actual Hip-Hop trio with their own DJ, and it was a true "🤯 now it all makes sense"-moment. However, a friend pointed out to me that the people who misunderstood me were probably unfamiliar with Hip-Hop, and that if they hear "DJ", they might picture some lame guy who presses play on the stereo during their cousin's wedding party or something. 🤦 I couldn't just leave them with that impression 😅 Of course, nowadays, DJs work with a laptop and online sample libraries instead of turntables and digging crates at record stores for hours to find that perfect sample, but the role as the beat makers hasn't changed.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find enough material to really work out the roles of the younger members, and I don't want to speculate. I partly agree with you and I will just respectfully give my opinion about this guide (beautiful guide be the way). I know that this is about teamwork and roles which is why in my opinion I feel like categories should've been 3racha, danceracha and vocal racha and then dissecting the importance of each member in those units because they all work together in those aspects to make skz complete. I just feel like "The Face" and "The Joker" are more character focused than contribution focused to the team. Don't get me wrong I know hyunjin and Felix are the two members who mostly attract attention from non stays and are the first known members of the group. but that is mainly visually and characteristically that being from edits stays make so I didn't really understand the teamwork part because I believe skz's music (sound) on its own is enough as unique as it is. It attracts a lot of attention from non stays and non kpop fans. if you would've explained their contributions to their respective racha units including jeongin then I think the whole idea of teamwork would've been complete. I know being a visual is not an insult (at least I don't think that's how you intended it to be) but I also feel like you just restricted Felix and hyunjin as only candy to the eye, you didn't really highlight their importance. Hyunjin's solo dance projects are just him expressing his passion for dancing. him, Lee know and Felix are mostly part of dance performance openings in skz and though it does attract more attention to them it's not necessarily a strategy to make them THE FACE of skz so I don't really understand that part especially since it's not even an official thing because last time I checked skz doesn't have any official positions even though they still stick to their units, so there isn't an official visual or face in skz. It's more like what they are mostly known for and if that was the case for Felix it would've been his voice while hyunjin his dance and charisma. And with I.N I honestly didn't understand the whole concept of the joker and how it's a contribution to their teamwork. Am I the drama? 😭😭😭. If you don't mind can you kindly make me understand because in respective to teamwork, the main idea of the whole guide I only understood 3racha, Lee know as a dance leader and seungmin as the voice but the rest just seemed added just to include all of the skz members especially I.N.

Making a guide like this always means making choices and simplifying things, because it is impossible to tell everything in one video. This guide takes a function-oriented approach, meaning I tried to highlight the core function each member plays in the music and performance side of things. It is not the only function they can and do fill, just the ones I thought each of them is making sure is covered. I originally wanted to make a part 2 on off stage teamwork, which is different and also super interesting, but I didn't have enough material to make it work. I used the words "the body" and "the face" to categorise the functions, because JYP used the comparison to a body in the opening clip, and I didn't want to introduce a new metaphor, but the separation that I was actually making is: "foundation" + "outward-facing functions", so, you could also use the metaphor of a building with a foundation and the construction built on top of it. That's why I split Danceracha. 3Racha is building the foundation for the music-side of things, and Lee Know is responsible for the foundations on the performance-side of things. They all also obviously play their parts on top of these foundations, but if a situation gets critical, that's where their priorities lie - and you can see it especially with Bang Chan and Lee Know during performances. They do take centre stage plenty of times, but only if the foundations are solid. And that's why it sometimes looks like they don't get enough spotlight on their performance skills. If need be, they'll pull back to make sure the foundation is stable. Given that Lee Know does a lot of the foundational work to ensure the quality of the group performances on stage, it is good that Danceracha has two other members who can act as outward-facing ambassadors for the group in different ways. And SKZ is lucky that Felix and Hyunjin can do it in such different ways that they complement each other. I chose the "do you wanna come in?" line from Back Door towards the end of Felix' segment, because I feel like this sums up his main function in the team. He can play other roles, like all of them, but Felix is ultimately the one who is most likely to catch new people's attention and invite them to take a closer look. So, that's how he is often used both in their songs with his voice and their performances with his charisma on stage. If I were to update this video, I would include more of his dancing. Hyunjin does the same in a different way, with a stronger focus on dance, especially the opportunities he received to do solos, like the MAMA opening or Studio Choom. I used the TikTok edits because it is an easy way to showcase his strengths. As for I.N., I chose the Joker Card in the end, because they have brought up his history with the Joker Character on multiple occasions any it was the easiest narrative to fall back on. But what I was trying to get at is that he is the one who they are slowly building up to fill different roles as needed. He is still developing, but he is not just working on his vocals, they are also always challenging him to take centre stage in other ways as well. I think we'll see many surprises from him in the future, and there are more things we haven't seen from him, yet. That's why I thought joker card fit the best. So, I picked two sets of basic functions: foundational and outward-facing, and the aspects I decided to highlights are the ones that, "if they had to fall back to the most basic role, which would it be". For 3Racha, it's songwriting + production, as well as rapping for Changbin and Han (also singing for him), Lee Know the group formations, Seungmin the vocals, Felix + Hyunjin drawing and guiding attention to the group in their own unique ways, and I.N. being able to join either Seungmin for vocals or Felix + Hyunjin for guiding attention, or both, depending on where they need him more. It's because all of these bases are covered so comfortably, that they can play around, experiment, and show off all the other skills they have (that's kind of what I was trying to convey in the ending segment), and surprise us with suddenly everyone rapping like they did in Maze of Memories, or releasing vocal-heavy tracks where everyone mainly sings like Ex or Neverending Story, the flexibility they have for dance formations centering around different members with nobody distracting from them, and all the new sounds that we get to hear from sub-units writing and producing their own songs. I hope this clarifies where I'm coming from. There is never only one true way to present the same team, and this is the perspective on their teamwork that I found most interesting from all of the sources I went through.
