Join me as I head off to Norfolk to stay in The Victoria within the beautiful Holkham Estate.
This year I’ve promised to spend more time in the present with my loved ones, so Sigh and I escaped to spend some time in Norfolk together.
I’ll show you everything that I packed for the night away, and bring you along with me to explore the stunning surroundings.
Lastly, I’ll talk a little about the dating game and marriage! Including some of the best advice I’ve ever received from my dear cousin in America. I truly believe that you should never stop working at a marriage, support each other through the ups and downs, make time where you can and meet in the middle.
We had such a glorious time away together, I do hope you enjoy coming along with me. Have you ever ventured to Norfolk?
Love, Charlie x

A lovely video, we are now retired and have a 12 year age gap, I’m 67 and my husband is 79 this year, I was given two useful marriage tips the first one from my Grandmother about husbands “men are like dogs, the tighter you keep them on the leash the more they want to get away, let them off the leash and they will always come back to see what is happening.” My Father told me never to let the sun go down on an argument, kiss and make up, tomorrow is another day. Surviving retirement Twice the husband…half the income Monday morning we have a coffee and a meeting of the diaries so that we both know what we have planned for the week, also this helps me know what days I need to cook. We each have one day a week out of the house giving the other person a day at home alone and we always go out together somewhere once a week. Since retiring my husband always goes sailing abroad with friends twice a year, this gives me two separate weeks when I can meet up with friends and have a good sort out at home. I also go away for one week each year with a girlfriend this allows my husband to realise what I do at home although I always leave things well prepared. It’s so important to keep up with friends and have a small part of a separate life so you have things to chat about after so many years. You are absolutely right about communication, when my husband first retired he would always do his post/paperwork at the kitchen table he also would shush me when he was on the phone. Although we have an office he said he liked to be close to me and the aga! I know the kitchen and snug are the heart of the home but I like it to myself whilst I am cooking. 12 years into retirement I feel that I am lucky to have my husband still sitting at the kitchen table as so many friends have lost their husbands but he now goes out of the room to make a phone call. We still celebrate our anniversaries, valentines and even the day we met, he always leaves a romantic handwritten note under my pillow when he goes away these things keep marriage alive. The years flash by enjoy your special trips together whilst you can ❤ and remember husbands are like open fires if you don’t tend to them …they will go out

Love the tapestry. I completed quite a few when my children were small. The half cross stitch is called a Half Tent. Good for you to stitch and sew. I too learned on a vintage hand cranked Singer

Oh lucky you. We absolutely love Holkham House and the estate and Wells by the sea. We have stayed at the campsite there where your horse comes too.Fabulous beach out of season, not a fan of crowds. Have you seen the Queen’s beach hut?

I really enjoyed this video and you are so right about marriage. You definitely go through different seasons and ups and downs. It’s important to be kind to one another especially when you feel like being the opposite! My husband and I have been married for 27 years and I was quite young when we married. Taking time away is something we need to learn to do so thank you for the inspiration. I only discovered you this week and have been enjoying catching up on your videos.

What a treat Charlie, such a quiet place. Loved it all from the packing to the chat and the scenery. I enjoyed watching your vlog with my Chai Latte, whilst everyone was out to tennis. I decided to stay home to enjoy the peace and quiet in splendid isolation. Do tell Simon I am making his 'steak and chips' recipe tonight, easy meal and pavlova for pudding. Looking forward to your shopping upcoming video, I was going to ask you about that, glad you'll be sharing. Thank you and happy weekend.

35 years married this year and we have certainly had our ups and downs. The nurse who gave me my vaccinations for our honeymoon destination said to me, 'Marriage is all about give and take...but women usually have to give a little bit more'. Lady Anne Glenconner is from Holkham Hall, isn't she? I was astounded to read in her book that London double decker buses are buried under the dunes at Holkham beach. Lovely video. I am glad you had a lovely time away.

I think if you work through difficult times together you come out far stronger, we have had some very testing times and have learnt how to navigate them together. I am so pleased you found that book helpful xxx

The most rewarding of all is still ahead, when you watch your children navigate their married life, applying some of the skills learned by observing you. We were married in 1973. Very young, we were 21. We waited ten years before we started our family. Our daughter turns forty next week and our son will be 39 in May. As they navigate family life, they often tell us that they truly realize and appreciate what it took ( and takes ) to succeed in marriage and family life. I have told my adult children, that for me, the return to ( the remembrance of ) that little spark of love that ignited the fire at the beginning of our relationship is what helped me (us) our through the difficult seasons. Now, in our 70’s, the return to when we fell for each other is still sweet. We laugh and say it wasn’t always a “cake walk” while we count our blessings! We will be celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary in May. Navigating love and life is likely our greatest legacy. You and Simon are setting a wonderful example for your children. Your readers are gifted by your authentic heart and dedication to your husband, your children, your home, your community, all of your furry creatures and your creative process of sharing life through “Ask Charlie”! Wishing you a best blessed weekend!

That hotel looks very like one I stayed in near there. I can't reveal its name for fear of reprisals but it was quite nice until everything went pear shaped and I got banned. It turns out you really can have too much sloe gin and some people have no sense of humour when it comes to funerals
