Sahir was twentieth centuryu Ghalib. His shairi had depth and pathos. His somgs had subtle and bold message for all to see. He preached, he scolded and conveyed to one and all the evils in our socity. He was a genius. I love his "Taj Mahal" Ek shaansha ne daulat ka sahara le kar Hum gharibon ki mohabbat ka udaya hi mazaq. You can not top this.

@@ADITYASHARMA-nh4wq I am NOT comparing him to Ghalib. I meant to imply that he was our Ghalib of 20th century. NO one can even come close to Ghalib, in my humble opinion.

sure....sahir saheb was an excellent poet of a literary caliber so the lyrics he wrote a very fine and intellectual flair. at the same time, i am continually amazed at the immense talent of the other lyricists also of our film industry. even the casual and pop-culture film songs of that golden era were filled with lyrics perfect to the context as well as to the melody. altogether, this was a phenomenon to marvel that can never be recreated. it almost seems like that every worthwhile and beautiful sentiment that needed to be poured into songs, has already been expressed so very little - if anything at all - remains to be written; we are very blessed to have lived in those wonderful times, and experienced such joy.

Sahir Sahab was one of the greatest lyricist India has ever produced. He was equally at ease with sher-o-shayri and kavita. His poetry "Naiyya dag mag dag mag dole, under the caption " Kitni door kinara" was part of Hindi language subject in primary schools those days. In one of the High courts in our country, a case was dragging on for years, without any leads. The judge dismissed the case, with a reference to Sahir's "Chalo ek baar" "Wo afsana jise anjaam tak lana na ho mumkin, usae ek khubsurat mode dekar, chodna accha " Music director Ravi ji once asked Sahir sahab to narrate a story in just 2 lines!!! Pat came the reply from Sahir sahab:--- "Poori raat na jaage toh wo jawani hi kya, Subah tak na chale toh wo kahani hi kya!!!! All his contemporary lyricists were equally good, but Sahir sahab was a shade better, because all his songs were realistic. His personal tragedy in love twice, made him very emotional. The emotions of an anguished, forlorn lover was visible in all his songs. For example:-- Chalo ek baar phir se, ajnabi ban jaayein hum dono. Aap aaye toh khayale, dil - e- naashad aaya. Wo subah kabhi toh aayegi Na tu zamin ke liye, hai na aasman ke liye. Man re tu kaahe na dheer dhare. Wo nirmohi, moh na jaane, Jinka moh kare. Na tu zamin ke liye, hai na aasman ke liye. Tera wajud hai sirf daastan ke liye. Is bhari duniya me koi bhi hamaara na hua, gair toh gair, apanon ka sahara na hua. Sahir sahab, the absolute genius, will continue to live in the hearts of true music lovers till eternity. Jai Hind. Jai Bharat.

Bhai Nayyar Saheb, pls. do not make such comments. You have every right to consider Sahir your favourite poet. For me too he was very outstanding. But I've heard Pt. Pradeep, Bharat Vyas, Majrooh, Shaqeel, S.H.Bihari, Raja Mehndi Ali Khan, Shailendra, Rajendra Krishan, Kaifi Azmi, Gulzar, Shahryar, Hasan Kamal. Bhai saab, they were all unique in their own way. I tell you Sahir saheb had the perfect mark (chhaap) of his upbringing in the undivided Punjab where Muslims and Hindus lived together. So he was very strong both in Hindi and Urdu. Shaqeel belonged to Badayun in U.P. where Urdu with non-punjabi influence and Hindi plus rural dialects was spoken. So he could write songs like Nain lad jayi hain (from Ganga Jamuna) and of course Sahir was Sahir, Shaqeel was Shaqeel and Majrooh was Majrooh with the God-given ability to write any song according to situation. He could be terribly poetic and intellectual and could also write simple geets at the same time. I say all are incomparable in their own way. Pls. remember Majrooh saab wrote for Khayyam, Thehriye hosh mein aa loon, toh chale jayiyega. These guys were unique boss and in their own way they were the best. No comparison with each other.

Girish Parikh i think Narshimhan also talked admirably about Shaqeel's quality of writing so the charge is perhaps incorrect. He also compliments Majrooh. Admiring Majrooh and Shaqeel can hardly be considered being partial to Hindus only. No one can deny that Muslims have contributed tremendously to the Indian Hindi Film industry - it's a very stark fact. Among the greatest script writers, music directors, musicians, lyricists and singers have been Muslims. So many of our great Classical Singers the Ustaads were/all are Muslims. Shaqeel also wrote masterful poetry and Begum Akhtar has sung so many of his creations. So yes, many other poets have claim to admiration and recognition. Saahir, by all counts, yes, remains incomparable and number one - he's the lyricist of the lyricists.

Amit, I also wrote on Rajendra Krishan, Shailendra, Gulzar etc. By mistake I failed to mention Hasrat, who also wrote very mesmirizing numbers. Hasrat really came into his own when writing solo for composers like Madan Mohan, OP Nayyar, even Kalyanji Anandji or Laxmi Pyare, though he wrote less songs for them than for Shankar Jaikishan. Hasrat wrote outstanding songs for SD Burman in Tere Ghar Ke Saamne and also Ziddi starring Joy Mukherjee and Asha Parekh.

isn't this ironic that a poet of such a caliber who wrote for almost 40 years has just won 2 film fare awards. I can't digest this. either there were really some awesome poets and some really good work done in those days or it was pure politics which confined him to just 2 awards in his entire lifetime or people who were in the jury could not understand poetry in real sense.

@@zumarakhan1805 please do not bring in the religious angle here. you need to check and see who won in those days and if they were on par or may be superior to him then that is not an issue because a better deserving person won. Of course there might have been much superior poets than him those days who knows.

He was very bold writer, only he could give us ' jineh naaz hai hind par so kahan hai', 'Tu Hindu banega na musalmaan banega' Aurat KO janam diva mardon ne', ' Chino Arab hamara, Hindustan hamara', Aasman pe hai khuda aur zamin pe him, 'ye masjid hai, wo butkhana, chahe ye mano chahe ye mano, 'Ab moi GULSHAN na ujade an Satan azaad hai' and many more.
