The M50 Ontos in War Thunder is a 6 Barrel Tank Destroyer for the US Tech Tree. The M50 in War Thunder is goofy but incredibly potent Tank Destroyer. It fires RPG's from it's 6 Recoiless Rifles with over 400mm of penetration. It can penetrated literally anything it faces.
The Ontos is a really weird tank. Designed to be dropped behind enemy lines via parachute and then crewed once it had landed, it saw some use in Vietnam. But in War Thunder, it's an absolute Goblin. It's hard to see, can spam fire the six cannons and dispatch anything infront of it with ease!
It's also really funny! :)

The 4 machine guns on top are used to rangefind, they have the same velocity and arc as the main gun.

​@@juanbait9670 unfortunately the ranging MGs in the game don't really work (Chieftains also have one for HESH). They only have the same impact to around about 300-400m, after that the MG rounds fall short from the actual point of impact

The Ontos is one of my favorite vehicles in the game. Somewhat counterintuitively it is really good when played extremely aggressively in CQB. Primarily because you are so small and fast that you can just whip around corners and blast people and they either won't have time to react or they miss because they are aiming above you.

A recoilless rifle doesn't use rockets. It uses gunpowder (or whatever similar propellant), but a lot of the expanding gas escapes through holes in the shel, then holes in the back of the breech. This means the gun doesn't absorb most of the recoil, but you need to use more propellant to compensate for the what's wasted.

Forgotten Weapons did a couple videos on the ranging MG's used with the Recoiless Rifles, very interesting. Pretty funny the most efficient way to aim the gun was to fire a smaller gun.

Absolutely love the ontos just for the sheer insanity of whoever invented it. just a pyramid on tracks with 6 super muskets strapped on top. Like a wild west gunslinger you have 6 shots and then its like 6 minutes to reload from OUTSIDE the tank (irl).

I remember reading some pretty insane stories about this anachronistic vehicle platform in a Vietnam grunts book he wrote upon returning home. They loved the Ontos not only because of its relatively fast rate of fire but also for the fact it could fire 106mm Beehive (flechette) rounds directly at oncoming VC waves. One instance in the book (I believe it was Guns Up by Johnnie M. Clark but may have been another) the author Clark was in a slit trench off a main road that VC had been sending coordinated, continuous attacks through. At one point it was getting pretty dire with gun nests getting overrun by grenades near the wire that an Ontos team pushed out from the perimeter of the base they were defending and leveled the 6 barrels across the snaking road up to the base. Like clockwork every few minutes the Ontos team would let off a Beehive round whose flechettes flew right over Clark at these VC waves coming up the road and through the forest on either side. Clark (if it was in fact in Guns Up) later mentioned that not a single leaf on a tree didn't have a hole through it, even mentioned finding pinned limbs to tree trunks.

This tank is so fun. You can come around the corner nose to nose with a heavy and win the contest. And it scouts! It takes a good long while to get used to how much the rounds drop, though, and how the aim points are offset.

Great video and thanks. Historically, the .50 (not .30 modded) was ballistically matched to the recoilless rounds meaning you walked the HMG fire until you had rounds on target, than fired the (slang) reckless rounds to hit. No sights needed. In Viet Nam, the USMC loved them. While WT doesn't require this, it's still fun to play that way.

Spook is firing his secondary at the same time as primary cuz bindings. Secondary is a ranging shot from each barrel using regular 308 bullets with the same trajectory as his main guns.

I will mention that the m50's 50 cals aren't 50 bmg they are a ranging gun so if you fire those guns they match the drop rate of your shell. It really helps at rang to make sure you hit with what little shells you have.

When flying the a1h, the zunis are the way to go. Much larger range, less spread, one hit kills everything. You think a full mighty mouse load is heavy? I run 6x 500 lbs, 40 zunis, 20 something mighty mouse and a toilet. Best plane in WT imo.

i think more of a reason why people don't like playing this is the arrangement of the guns needs a lot of time to get used to and most people including me couldn't be bothered to learn how to aim it and what order the guns fire in.

The guns on this tank are amazing, although the M50 isn't really the best example of how good they are. I would really suggest taking out the FIAT 6614 for a real experience of the M40's.

The 12.7 machine guns are for ranging they have the same trajectory as the main guns. Use those to aim.

They unfortunately don't really work in game. After ~400m the 12,7mm will fall short from the point of impact, with the gap only getting bigger the further you go (same case for the ranging MG on the Chieftains)
