A Friends of Kenwood Sunday lecture given by artist Sarah Pickstone.
Kenwood House London has 4 paintings by Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807). She was one of the Royal Academy’s founding members. Her paintings also hang in the ceiling of the Royal Academy’s entrance hall. In 2018, Sarah Pickstone was invited to make a work to be displayed in Burlington House in homage to Angelica Kauffman.
Sarah Pickstone discusses the process of making ‘An Allegory of Painting’, and her research through drawing directly from Kauffman’s work to making her own large five metre painting. She talks about her creative and practical response to Kauffman’s use of colour and the challenge of making a large work that tries to give contemporary form to 18th century ideas on painting.
Sarah Pickstone studied at the RA schools, won the John Moores Painting Prize in 2012 and exhibits internationally. She is a member of senior faculty at the Royal Drawing School and Turps Banana Painting School.
