Architecture and design critic Oliver Wainwright steps into the Rain Room, a technical wonder by contemporary art studio rAndom International. The free installation, which runs at the Curve at the Barbican in London from 4 October until 3 March 2013, uses 2,500 litres of water, falling at 1,000 litres per minute

It isn't a waste of water....this uses 2.5 litres of water which re-circulates back round the valve. Swimming pools use hundreds of thousands of litres of water.

You dont have to be a billionaire, you could build something like this but smaller for just a few hundred dollars, just will take a while to build all the valves and connect them up, u dont have to use 3d depth cameras like that, u could use simple weight sensors, or, i dunno i just know that there must be a much simpler way to do it on a smaller scale or even bigger scale and without so much electronics and no camera...if u HAD to use the cameras u could use very cheap webcams and it could still bne done for a few hundred bucks or u could just take a shower

+Fire blade They can find out how fast you're moving and calculate if the water will respond fast enough, but if not they can just block the valves instead of a centimeter around you they could block a foot.
@caru93
@caru93 6 жыл бұрын
Velocity and acceleration are probably calculated to help predict how much space the valves need to give and how fast to stop. Or create a cushion at least for the water still in air when the valve closes. If you moved too fast for the cameras to keep focus on you well, or moved and then pushed off to the side randomly, you'd probably get a little wet.

Ever turn the Closed Captions on? I just did it because my roomie is watching a movie in the same room. THEY ARE GIBBERISH! My sincere sympathies to anyone who must rely on this utterly useless "service" to try to understand videos.

If there is no background noise, and you speak clearly with good diction, KZbins auto CC does a passable job. If not, it is awful. Better videos, intended for commercial use often spend time and money on closed captioning. It takes me about an hour to do 10 minutes passably well.

AUTO-captions are gibberish. But some videos actually have real captioning that people uploaded. But, I have run into good auto-captioning. Good enough to understand most of what is being said.

carmium are you dull? It's a wonderful service on most videos with English speakers because it has a very high accuracy, and it's better than nothing if you are deaf. "Useless". People put thousands of hours on the auto caption service, and you call it useless. The echos and the accents confuse the system, but instead of complaining, fix it.

Art or artists has become such a vague subjective term, and wrongly so. I do not see these guys as artists, but I do see them as designers/engineers. I don't know what is wrong with being an engineer. Through history some engineers have been visionaries. If these engineers cannot find a practical use for their work, no doubt someone else might. It doesn't take anything away from the interesting installation they have built. The only offence they or others might take, is my avoidance in labeling them artists. If anyone thinks they are artists, then could they define art first?

"were looking at printing with water using inks that respond to water" please spend time actually paying attention to the artists vision before you make a statement like that
@Avidcomp
@Avidcomp 10 жыл бұрын
I saw that and it does not alter my view. How is the efforts of printing with water not an engineering exercise? And the display, not a design exercise? In order to say it's an artist's work, can you define why it is art beyond the design/engineer work that I have seen. What for you makes it art? Both Design and Engineering produce aesthetically pleasing results, as this does.

Avidcomp Is the person who first decided to paint using a brush and pigment based paint an engineer or an artist Is the person who first picked up a chivel and started sculpting an artist or an engineer Is the first person to control water with artistic intention an artist or an engineer Also what makes it art for me is the fact they have taken a force of nature an element of weather and basically recreated it in a confined space controlled though technological means, i see it as a show of how far we are progressing technologically and how we can even in this day keep innovating and changing our environment, it also represents that we are effecting our ecosystem with our technologies oh and to define art? Art is any creative medium where the viewer defines its purpose rather than the creator... when an artist makes something not with a vision but instead "this is this and only this if you don't see this your wrong" view... well it loses all artistic integrity... for instance define what davinci was trying to convey through the mona lisa... and tell me what shes smiling about infact take any great artwork and tell me what the artist behind it was trying to say.
@Avidcomp
@Avidcomp 10 жыл бұрын
DragonFiendStudios In answer to you initial examples, they are engineers. They have taken an aspect of nature and re-modeled it to be used for a purpose of their choosing. As Francis Bacon said "nature to be commanded must be obeyed" Your definition of art is my definition more or less of engineering. I want to stress that I hold engineering in very high regard, so it's not at all a slight that I refer to anyone as an engineer. You perhaps do not realize it when you say that "any creative medium where the viewer defines its purpose rather than the creator" But this is the philosophy that has led from Immanuel Kant, a mixed up mystic that has embedded itself through our education and social psyche today, to be excepted as a given without challenge, and has it's roots in the moral code of Altruism, coined by Auguste Comte, where the moral good is anything that serves others but not one's self. In essence and indeed through your own definition, subjugates the "artist" to a servant of the masses. Well, I reject that and I would do so if I were the only one to oppose the views of all around me. Although I know that I'm not the only one with such a conviction. But in answer to what is art? Firstly art is a creation of an artist. If a piece is to be art, it must have a creator; the artist. If an artists work was disliked by all, it doesn't alter that fact, they are merely observers and if the creator chooses to evade his own mind, choosing instead to be led by what society wants, he is a servant. For an artist to create anything from his own mind, he must be aware of his own mind and his work must be a representation of that. How it is received is irrelevant. And what of his own mind? What will form his ideas and how will he choose to represent them? This is the artists own philosophy. How he sees himself and his relationship with the world in which he lives; his values, his emotional evaluations and his dreams. His work; his art; his creation is therefore a selective re-creation of his metaphysical engagement rooted in his values; An integration of reality as he perceives it through his faculty of concept formations. His purpose is to represent himself, selectively with reality for how it is and/or what it ought be. His work concretes his existence. The observer can make of it what they choose, but in order for the work to be art, the creator must acknowledge his individual identity as the creator and his work is the result of his concepts. After all, man is a conceptual being, and his concepts are a faculty of his unique mind. If one damns his mind, he is merely a tool for other men to use at their whim, and he'd do better not existing. Any man that has no issue with another man being a tool is advocating his enslavement. Altruism has led you to believe that the creator is as good as a zero.; that art is art by means of whim. It is not. We live in a world where people communicate without clarity, where compromise is the standard because it's perceived as the closest way of not offending the masses and yet it ends up offending everyone. It is the herd mentality. Art must be above all of that and show by representation of the creator an essence to face up to, or to inspire ideally. It is not a bromide of the mob. To build something and say I don't know what it is, is to say; I don't know who I am.

Well if you want to get philosophical Then to create something and clearly define what it is, is also to clearly define yourself implying that you are one sided or not very complex in personality How often is it that someone can outright say "this is what i am" and assign a definition to their being

That's completely illogical. In order for that logic to work, you would have to take something that makes people go outdoors and then move it inside, thus removing the need to go outside. Except most normal people avoid rain, as in avoid going outside....when it's raining....so moving a rain experience inside wouldn't hinder anyone's desire to leave the house. Not to mention, showers already exist....so if someone want to stand in falling water, they already can....
