** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
This is Simon's first time tackling one of Arbitrary's sudokus. It's called Things In Common and, well, it's completely brilliant. We're not sure how easy/difficult this one is - Logic Masters says 4-out-of-5 stars. It's the kind of puzzle that you could be stuck on for days until you see the trick!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
sudokupad.app/q80drlpksu
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits along a pink "renban" line form a consecutive set without repeats. (These digits can appear in any order.) Digits within a cage do not repeat and sum to the indicated value (if given).
** NEW SUMGEONS & DIAGRAMS PUZZLE **
If you enjoyed our recent Dungeons & Diagrams streams then definitely check out the new puzzle by sunnyjum, Sumgeons & Diagrams, which combines D&D and sudoku in a brilliant way. The puzzle can be played completely free over on Patreon (and Simon's solve of the puzzle is available behind the paywall).
Other treats on Patreon include:
- the new James Bond sudoku hunt competition;
- Simon's latest forays into the world of Islands Of Insight;
- Mark's video looking at the new OneUp puzzle from Rodolfo Kurchan;
- his solve of Region Geometry by Emre Kolotoğlu (3hr 36min long...!);

The first thing I discovered, aside from Mr. Phistomephel, was the fact the none of the 23 cages would work if the lines were 12345, because then the fourth digit in the cage would have to be a minium of 11, which doesn't work. That meant instantly, that no 1 could be on the pink lines and therefore on the ring. And then I got stuck, quit and started watching the video. 😀

I think they said that they got feedback that creating chapter titles for the proofs counts as a “spoiler”. I personally don’t mind, but I can see how if you prefer to find the break-in yourself you might not want to know what proofs they talk about in the video.

Red velvet cake is chocolate cake. The red colour originally came from the interaction of cocoa powder with vinegar, but now generally comes from red food colouring. The main difference, apart from the colour, seems to be the way the cakes are frosted. A typical chocolate cake is often frosted with chocolate frosting, whereas a red velvet is adorned with cream cheese frosting.
@katiekawaii

It should have less cocoa than a chocolate cake though. That and the vinegar make it its own thing.

I finished in 130 minutes. I was unable to do this one in my head, so I had to write things down. Even then, this puzzle was brutal, although I seemed to be consistently making progress, so I never felt stuck. This puzzle also never gave up and resisted the whole way through. I thought as soon as I got a digit, that it would speed up. It did not. It wasn't until the very end that it unwound, surprisingly on the 25 cage in the top right rather than the outlier 26 cage. This was very fun, hard but fun. Great Puzzle!

I just love the pattern of the clues in the grid. The Phistomefel ring with the 23 cages at its corners and then the corner 2x2s, it looks like four short chains flailing off of a cog or wheel. Love the logic to determine the triples and place the first digits, very smooth and satisfying.
@Mn0ty
@Mn0ty 16 күн бұрын
28:45 the easier way to see it is by noticing because the renbans on the corners see one digit of the renban on the ring, thy must be opposites, therefore there are two cells on each corner box which see all 1 to 9 digits.

Yeah, another instance of Simon doing it very elegantly, but also unessecarily complicated
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 15 күн бұрын
@@PassionPopsicleI'd hardly call it complicated. The first thing I noticed was there could never be a 1 on the inner renbans because of the 23 cages, and consequently, there couldn't be a 1 on any of the corner renbans either, by Phistomefel.
@Paolo_De_Leva
@Paolo_De_Leva 15 күн бұрын
Similarly, it was easier for me to see that wherever you placed *1-2-3-4* along the ring, by plain sudoku three of these digits would be instantly pushed into a single cell of a corner box. For instance, if you put *1-2-3-4* on the left and right sides of the ring (which is the only possible configuration in Simon's example @26:22), by sudoku the left side would lock three of these digits into *r3c1* and the right side would do the same into *r7c9.* And by the way, a similar problem is created by the *6-7-8-9* sequences on the top and bottom sides of the ring. You need (elementary) arithmetics to use Simon's method. I believe this is simpler because it just uses (plain) sudoku constraints. Of course, later you will need similar (but not identical) arithmetics to rule *1* out of the long renbans and hence push *6* into both the long and short renbans...

The offset pseudo-boxes can also help fairly early on. Since the totals are known, and 6 of the cells are in common, you can find the relationship between the sums of the 6 cells which are not in common. For example, the top 3 cells of box 4 must sum to 3 more than the top 3 cells in box 1. Doesn't help that much with the break-in, but would have helped with the stall in the middle.

My time (1 hour 9 minutes) was on par with yours considering the first 13 minutes were greetings and explanation of the ring pattern. I was surprised, as usually one like this takes me hours, but the ring pattern just screams at you and the renbans always have a special relationship with the 5 if they are of a decent length, so I knew that was the opening start and I absolutely loved the interaction of the two coming together, especially the "all or none" logic followed by the 567 slow burn. Just beautiful setting!

I think your point about corners is under discussed: the 4 corner digits cannot fully repeat across or down because 4 digits can’t fit in the 3 squares of the intervening box adjacent to Box5. This is true for many 2 2x2 boxes that share 2 rows or 2 columns, but the corners are easy to locate. (Does anyone know if a puzzle has been set that relies on this without necessarily including the Phistomephel ring in the solve path?)

At 57m of video, ~50m of solve, Simon discusses the break in symmetry - but only of the 3 cell cages. I could be wrong but I don’t think he’s noticed the 26 cage being different yet. It’s the only frustrating thing to see because he sees 180 things I don’t and I learned from Simon to prioritize noticing breaks in symmetry. he finds it at ~1h7m

40:02 I'm confused. I thought that if there is a digit that can't go in the ring, then it must go in the very center cell. Is that only the case when the diagonal lines have 9 unique digits?

Simon repeatedly proves you can't have the same four digits in all four corners by sudoku but once you've already proven phistomefel there's an even simpler way-if all the 2x2s are the same digits, the corner cells of the ring would have to be from those digits, and would be a repeat in the box of the copy of that digit in the 2x2...

Around 26 minutes, Simon says we have 2 sets of extreme digits. But I don't see see why it can't be 3-7 for example. An overlap can have up to 3 digits. Why do we need to have 2 ones and nines?
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 15 күн бұрын
He's initially talking about the four-cells renbans in the corners. If 5s are in the tips of the longer renbans, as shown, then there's a 5 in each of the corner boxes that prevents 5 appearing on the square four-cells renbans. If they cannot have a 5 on them, then they're either 1234 or 6789, so extreme.

@@TriforceOfCourage97 I am surprised Mark is getting so few likes. I strongly doubt he would get more likes if he did birthdays. He would get some more if he did more elaborate presentations of the featured puzzle, including curiosity-arousing comments posted on LMG, when available. However, *solving and explaining* style is much more important, in my opinion. I always need to speed up the playback of Simon's videos by at least 1.5, but I guess most people loves his calm and passionate solving approach, his warm quasi-childish emotional reactions and his repetitive and lengthy, but easily understandable explanations. Mark's videos are beautiful, his language and solving skills are amazingly good, but not everybody can immediately grasp his phenomenally concise explanations (By the way, on the opposite, I love them wholeheartedly.) Secondarily, I guess sometimes Mark uses too much lightning speed arithmetics and lightning speed systematic case-testing in his solves, and this might scare people away. *Quality of feautured puzzles* might also be a factor. However, recently that of puzzles featured by Mark has stratospherically improved. Last but not least, *time of publication* plays a crucial role. People in most Europe and Africa, for instance, has plenty of time to post enthusiastic comments below Simon's videos before going to bed, while many of those who watch Mark's videos as soon as he publishes them (at around mighnight for countries near the *Greenwich* meridian) might be too sleepy to comment. As far as I know, KZbin's algorithm penalizes videos with smaller amount of positive feedback in the comment section.

@@Paolo_De_Leva i agree with you on all points. Mark gets low likes and its sad, I also really like his solving a lot. he is quicker and sometimes that's nice to see. It seems just that Simon is more of a people person who loves to do these videos and really enjoys then and Mark seems (only an observation and most likely not true at all) to just do it because it needs to be done. I enjoy both styles and I watch both. but yea, here Marks videos come on around 11:30pm. and I already watched a long Simon video lol.
