An alternative way to cellar tobacco

I'm with you Muttnchop, I now have over 25 lbs of pipe tobacco cellared away. I'll keep adding to it, as I can afford to. I'm not sure exactly what is going to happen with these Deeming regulations, but it won't be good. I'm 59 years old, and hope to put enough pipe tobacco away, to last the rest of my life. I'm probably pretty close right now, but I think I'll add another 10 lbs to it, just to make sure! I've been buying bulk whenever possible, and using 1 pint Ball jars for storage. I'm a sucker for some of the GL Pease blends, so I'm putting a lot of that away too. I'm hoping to be able to enjoy my pipes for the rest of my life, but the feds are making it difficult.

That looks like a very logical method for tinned tobacco. I've started jarring a few bulk blends to gain more volume per dollar spent. Picking 12 tinned blends gives you good quality that gets better with time.

I just tried Penzance for the very first time today. I was in Ft. Smith (nearly 3 hours from home) taking care of some business and stopped by the local pipe and tobacco shop there and they had it in stock. It was quite a bit more expensive than what I usually pay online for a tin of tobacco, but I went ahead and purchased one since I didn't know when I would find it again. Man, it is really good. Sometimes when a blend is really hyped up I'm disappointed when I try it because I've put it on a pedestal and it doesn't live up to it. This one definitely is worthy of the hype. It is soooooooo good.

Ive been a lurker of your channel for awhile now. I always look forward to your videos. If i'm completely honest I used to believe that the way you went with the rotation was a bit technical. (Please dont take that in a bad way, I believe there was a bit of jelousy on my part) but you are completely right, with the looming fda regs i believe i do have to be more technical and methodical in my piping practices and in my purchases. Oh man, do I feel your pile pain! The wife's idea of organization is pile after pile--on the Ottoman, on the coffee table, on the kitchen table. It's ridiculous. At one time, we had TWO laundry baskets FULL of her stuff: mail and nick-nacks and pens and markers and just accumulated junk, sitting on our bedroom floor. For months. Hey Muttnchop, do you know of any resources that list a blend's release date? I'd love to stock up and that might help place some priority in what I fill with my budget. Grandfathered blends could move lower down my list. Of course, who knows what will ultimately happen, but at least I'll have a direction instead of spending all willy-nilly. Still too new to be able to organize a nice system like you have, kind of in that try anything and everything phase.

A good place to start is tobaccoreviews.com Look for the blend you are interested in, and sort reviews for it by date. If the oldest review is pre 07' chances are it will be one of the ones grandfathered in. This does not take into consideration "revived" blends, which I believe do not automatically get a free pass. I have no affiliation ( other than having an account, that allows me to make a review on a blend ) with TR, just trying to help some fellow pipers out there get the info they need to make informed purchasing decisions during this time.

It's called the Deeming Regulation and right now if the regulation does not change, pipe smoking or our ability to purchase tobacco is in grave danger. But I would suggest you watch my video "Deeming Regulation an update" I explain in that video how it will effect pipe tobacco, and what I feel the final regulation will look like. 😄😄👍

Hey Muttnchop, i am a little confused. You say that Maltese Falcon is an oriental forward, but all i can really taste is the latakia? I want to like this blend as well as plum pudding, but they both seem to be latakia forward. (Which i am having a hrad time with) Am I wrong?

Maybe it has something to do with each persons pallet is different, when I smoke it, the Orientals are in the foreground meaning I taste that more then anything, now I do taste the latakia, but its more in the background for me. The reverse maybe what you are tasting, your pallet maybe picking up more of the taste of latakia then the oriental. This is why I don't like recommending tobacco blends, everyones likes are different, and I don't want someone to buy a tobacco I have recommended and they end up not liking it, sorry if this is true with you. :) :) :)

You mention Plum Pudding often in several of your videos...and to be honest, I've never purchased it (no where local to me has it, and my 'tightwad' kicks in online for $16 for a 2-ounce tin). From the write up on it, it sounds like a conventional aromatic with Latakia, Oriental and Perique added...but comes as a flake (or as they say, cake) and is recognized as an English...not an aromatic. While I'm a huge fan of flavored, wet aromatics; everyone talks about the complex flavor of Plum Pudding...and I think this is my largest detractor from buying it. I don't have a really 'sophisticated palate', I get along well with Backwoods Buttered Rum or Sutliff Mellow Peach or Dark Sweet Rum...but much milder aromatics (like Captain Black Original) are somewhat lost on me as to why they drive a large following, when obviously my own downfall, is that I can't taste them very well. Of course, taste is everything once you get into pipe smoking...and as they say, 'to each his own'... By the way, your channel is excellent, and even though I've smoked since the late 1970's, I find little bits of information I never thought of in a lot of your videos. Kudos, and keep up the great work!

Skeeter Saurus - the main reason I like plum pudding so much is the intense taste, it is pricy, but there is another tobacco that taste almost the same, a little better in my opinion and that is G. l. Pease Maltese Falcon, and I don’t think it cost quite as much.
