Reminds me of the scripture …”there is nothing new under the sun”. The word of God keeps us together.

Thanks Ralph. When I lost my faith it was regained when I dusted off my Bible and started reading it every single day in the way that you describe.

In the 4th century, it was not possible to own a Bible... unless you were a monk, priest or Bishop. But today... we do have the Bible easily accessible. And what a gift it is!! If you are new to reading the Bible, begin with the New Testament. Your life will never be the same! God bless.

I was born in 1971 in Ireland. Even though I have gone to Mass every Sunday I have practically never heard a priest using the word 'Bible'. 'Sacred Scripture' is also very rarely used. It has been a taboo word. The Church in Ireland refuses to mention the words Bible, Sin, Hell, Purgatory, Confession, Catechism, sexual conduct, contraception, homosexuality, homosexual marriage, abortion or the literal presence of Christ in the Eucharist. If you want to learn the Faith in Ireland you have to do it independently, outside the Church and the education system. Thank goodness for the layity on the internet teaching our true Faith.

I love this reflection on Saint John Chrysostom's sermon about reading scripture. It's so amazing to think about people in 350 A D going home afrer Mass and reading their Bible. It's fun to find connections to people in the past, and know they were reading the same books.

So very beautiful! It's so great to see the same things ping us now we the same from the beginning. Just like the scripture said there's no new sent under heaven. We think we are in some unique time, but we are not. We may have different bells and whistles, but it's all the same. This was great! I will get back to my daily prayer time! My weakness and the devil took that away from me, but praise Jesus Christ who gives us the victory and with his grace I will be back in his word daily.

Actually Ralph, when I went to Catholic grade school, the nuns did tell us not to bother reading the Bible because we wouldn’t understand it anyway. Well that was probably true at our age but I took it as gospel as did a lot of my generation.

“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider how you have fared. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may appear in my glory, says the LORD. You have looked for much, and behold, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? says the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while you busy yourselves each with his own house.” (Haggai 1:7-9.)

Back in the 4th century, the only Bibles available were painstakingly printed by hand, so they were extremely costly, so ordinary people certainly didn't have a copy at home, and the copies in the churches were chained to keep them from being stolen because of their value. On the other hand, monks had copies because they had the time to do the copying for themselves--at least to have one copy for their monastery.

Can you please refer me to a contemporary English transcript of Saint John Chrysostom’s homilies and writings? I cannot bear the old Elizabethan English translations.
@RenewalMinistries2 ай бұрын
There are various books, with great modern translations, that contain collections of homilies and letters from St. John Chrysostom that you can find on Amazon! Most books are collections of sermons and writings he did on specific topics, so there's a lot to choose from depending on what interests you. For example, some of his most popular books at the moment are "On Marriage and Family Life" and "On the Priesthood", which are a compilation of homilies on those topics. There is a complete collection of his works available, but it seems to only be available electronically, so you could only view it online.

@@RenewalMinistries after your kindness, i hesitate to ask, but…is there a name for this sermon in the books? like sermon 62, or "as published in bob smith's 'seven greatest homilies of all time'"? 😜 i'd love to reference it to friends (and my pastor)

No problem! It's from the "On Wealth and Poverty" collection of his homilies. Specifically, the third sermon on Lazarus and the rich man. Thanks for watching!
