Pride is so dangerous and beguiling that it can be mistaken for self loathing, where one truly believes they have sinned so great that the Blood of the Lamb of God isn’t sufficient to cover their sins. How arrogant to believe you’re capable of such sin that the Creator Himself cannot forgive from His own sacrifice. This is what I’ve needed to take to heart for a long time

"He (the devil) is perfectly content to see you becoming chaste and brave and self-controlled, provided all the time he is setting up in you the dictatorship of pride". This was powerful for me. I used to stack up perceived virtues like trophies, glorifying myself in my own mind. I'm currently trying to transition from that mode of thinking to that of forgetting myself and pursuing virtue because it's what God has called us to. Lord, let my motivation be of submission and obedience, not pride and false humility!

There is a thought, a confession which is an anchor of humility. "Apart from Thee I can do nothing." Apart from Jesus, we are nothing in terms of faith or religion. He is the vine which nourishes the branch and brings forth the fruit from it: love, joy, peace, patience, goodness and so on. It is the grace of God, his work in my heart which enables my anchor to hold. Gracious Father in Heaven, in the kindness of your gentle Spirit, grant me grace to be reminded that apart from you and your Son, I can do nothing pertaining to love and Godliness.
@makeit26494 ай бұрын
I must gently disagree with your interpretation of this verse. This verse says that without Christ, we can do NOTHING. That isn't limited to things relating only to our faith, religions, or matters of love and Godliness. It says NOTHING. Not one of us - believer or unbeliever - can even take a breath without Him. In Daniel 5:23, the prophet reminds a pagan king that God holds his (the king's) breath in his hands. Paul told the unbelieving Greeks in Acts 17:28 that "in Him we live and move and have our being." So, nothing means "not a single thing." :)

Agree. People try to manufacture these attributes apart from Christ. People try to work for God to impress Him or be accepted by Him. But we will always fall short if we try to produce these fruit on our own. Staying in relationship with our heavenly Father through Christ is what transforms us. We can't transform ourselves. The reason Jesus died for us is to bring us back into right standing and relationship with God. There was a time when I had stopped praying and disconnected from God because I had been hurt by the church, looking back at that time, the fruits of the spirit that I had grown by being connected to the vine began to wither when I distanced myself from God and the longer I stayed away, the more I began to smell the stench of the fruit rotting out of my life. I began to yearn for Gods fellowship again. I started communing with Him again and once again the fruit began to produce in my life. This verse is quite meaningful to me because I saw it literally happen within my life. We cannot produce the fruit of the Spirit apart from the vine. Jesus is life! 🙌🏼

I have a grandson who was raised in church and to believe the gospel. When his grandmother, who loved him above the others, asked him to go to college, he did. It was a Baptist college and he went in as a believer and came out an atheist. I was talking to him the other day, and I told him, not to let his pride keep him from believing in God. It's not hard to spot. He really is full of pride since he graduated.

I think that if a person is raised into a belief it is almost necessary for them to lose faith first in order to develop true faith. When faith is inherited before one has a real choice it isn't quite the same thing. Everyone has to deal with and confront pride at some point. If a person were incapable of pride, it would be no great virtue to overcome it.

I once had the great blessing of experiencing the personality of God. The most striking initial impression was that He has no pride. This amazed me, to know that the One with all power and glory is totally devoid of pride. He has none. Pride is the self indulgent sin that makes us most unlike God. This revelation has given me great discernment. CS must have had so much insight into the subject because of the highly competetive academic circles in which he moved. It is the most wonderful blessing to meet a man or woman, expert or leader in their field, who has not succumbed to this temptation. Blessed are the poor in Spirit.

Romans 2:1 was the passage that caused me to pledge my life to try and live by the Bible almost 40 years ago. No one led me to it, I just picked up the Bible and started reading (never read it before). I read Romans 1 and was thinking "yeah, those dirty perverts and terrible sinners"....Then I read Romans 2:1 "You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things." I literally looked up and saw God and all of heaven looking at me in my guilt. I dove to my knees and promised God, "God I don't know what is in your Bible but I promise to spend the rest of my life trying to find out and live by it." I have done so. I STILL struggle mightily with pride. ...But I have found that the overwhelming Love of Christ is the tide that washes me of self.

1. Pleasure in being praised vs Vanity/Pride 2. Being proud of someone (especially a relative) should be admiration only, not a source of pride for oneself 3. Pride, the best discourse on Pride is by the Desert Father in about 300AD, John Cassian wrote the Spirit of Pride (one of the 8 deadlies). No Christian should skip reading this short document. Pride is what is nowadays called "narcissism', and the other sins you can have mixed in with your virtues, but with pride there is no virtue, pride kills taints and perverts all virtue, rather than be interspered amongst it like anger, sloth etc

Repetition of this message is important to spiritual life. Remember, remember, remember. I’m reminded of Blessed Charles de Foucauld’s observation: “It pleased God to make it easy for us to be saved. God didn’t attach salvation to knowledge or intelligence or wealth, nor to long experience or rare gifts that are not given to all. God attached it to something within the reach of everyone. Jesus attaches salvation to humility, to the act of making yourself little. That is all it takes to win heaven.” I see the wisdom of Foucauld’s observation but I don’t find it an easy one; therefore, the repetition of C.S. Lewis’ message.
