I spent two years in Germany while I was in the US Air Force, stationed in the Hunsrück region near the Mosel River valley areas. I had the opportunity to go to Oktoberfest on two occasions with several of my friends. Watching this video brought back so many wonderful memories for me. I’m dating myself here lol because I was there from 1988-1990. I found out without a doubt the best beer in the world is in Germany in general, and the O-fest specifically, delicious food (I love German food btw). I am about 50% German, having gotten German blood from both my grandmothers. I hope someday to return to visit and take my wife and my now adult children over there with me. Thanks for sharing this and all the other videos. Both of you seem to be an awesome young couple, and I hope and pray the best for your two as it would appear that you will be spending the rest of your lives together. God bless and take care! Tschüss!

french canadian here. I went in 2007, travelling alone, and actually got there on the final sunday because of itinerary changes. I did go and take a peek inside one of the tents, but i really wanted to sample some beer and mingling, so i ended up in a "merry-go-round" bar outside (I think it was the Fransischaner bier one). I was trying my best to communicate in german (with my half-dozen word vocabulary, lol). A guy next to me, seeing my dismay, gave me some english help and the barmaid, who probably thought i was making fun of her, suddenly understood... The guy was from Denmark and made the trip each year with his friends. He told me he was a member of the "Ten beer club" over in Denmark. I had a fun time, and definitely have to go back soon, AFTER learning some of the songs!! Tschuss!

As barfuss already asked, where did your grandmother come from? As far as I know there is one big difference between potato salads in Germany or the german speaking countries. With or without mayonnaise. My grandma was born in Silesia, so my favorite potato salad is with mayonnaise, bacon, coocked egg and pickles. But in the southern regions like Bavaria and Austria that is very uncommon.

The Englische Gärten was amazing, but as 15 year old Americans we were most impressed that we could get ein Bier pro 1 DM (25 cents at the time) . I expect that we would be splitting one between the two of us at today's prices. While we have visited Germany a couple of times since then we never got a chance to see Oktoberfest.

That’s it. That very last scene. Singing your heart out, slightly drunken, with big grin and a slightly melancholic look in your eyes. There are so many clips that show the spectacular, the ridiculous and sometimes the disgusting sides of the Wiesn. But they all failed to catch that moment when, at some point in the evening, that magic unfolds. When that largely unknown band has charged up the tent to a level of energy, that easily outshines any high-profile stadium event. Then, the crowd seems to become one huge organism. Singing, dancing, laughing, drinking. This goes on for an hour or so. Finally, during the last song, usually something slightly sentimental, the energy reaches its peak. Folks lying in their arms, hugging people they’ve never seen before, many overwhelmed, with watery eyes. I think that very last scene captured that moment very nicely. And then it’s over. 100000 people flood the street in front of the tents in a matter of minutes. An epic chaos, but 99.9% have a big grin on their face. I’ve been to the Wiesn last Friday. When the band started the last song, I was arm in arm with two colleagues, singing. A few meters away stood a young woman, alone, probably waiting for someone, looking at us with a slightly sad smile. I understood and nodded to her. She basically flew into our arms and together we sang „Angels“ with all we had. When the song was over we all gave her hug and away she was with a huge smile. Really, that’s what it is all about. That’s my Wiesn. People may complain about the Bierpreis and what not. Obviously they never made it to that point.

Hi, an ex-pat here in Munich. I just wanted to add a tiny detail, regarding kids "am Wiesen". I got my son with me (2,5yr) this year. And there where people in civilian with accreditaions. Who approached us and told us that they are from "Wiese kinder und jugendhilfe" (Oktoberfest kids and youth help - translated literally) and they informed me that kids should not be on Oktoberfest longer then 8 pm. And that we should slowly walk out. Although at the "Oide Wiesen" there where kids running around even around 10 pm. But "Oide Wiesen" is for families so maybe that is the reason.

I was in Switzerland for work with a coworker in September 2017 and our flights back to New York from Zurich were on Sunday morning. We finished up on Friday and drove from Biel Switzerland to Memmingen Germany where we were able to get a hotel on short notice. We caught an early train into Munich and were in the Hofbrau tent by 10:15 Saturday morning. We didn't leave until 21:30 and it was great. Luckily we got an open spot at a table only about 40 m from the stage and were joined by a group of local Munich young people. Both of us were "old" (47 and 50), and we had a great time with them. I am fairly short and didn't want to get lost in the crowd trying to get to the toilet so I held it until we left at 21:30. That is an impressive feat after 5 liters! We were back to our hotel in Memmingen around midnight then on the road to Zurich by 5:30. The whole experience was fantastic and I hope to return and enjoy more than one long day of singing in one tent.

I've been in Munich 4 times now at Oktoberfest time , but never have gone in. After this video, i guess I'll have to try it out. I stay with old exchange student near Erding. One thing you may have commented on already is how bundled up Germans and Austrians get when the temperature goes below like 20. Living in Pacific Northwest now, shorts and tee shirts are ok until like 10 degrees. Oh and another thing, shoe horns, when you leave the house you get handed a shoe horn, which I have to say I have no idea how to use. I like the videos, I'm Austrian, emigrated to Ohio in 1956 at age 7, so my German vocabulary is like a second graders. these videos evoke good memories.

shoehorn is easy, just stick it in the heel of the shoe, and slide your foot in. It just makes sure your heel actually goes in. it is much thinner than your fingers :) As far as bundling up goes. try wearing shorts and t-shirts when you are outside all day. here in the US nobody is really outside long. house to the car, car to the office, office to the car, car to 5 guys for lunch, car to the office, and so forth. 1 minute tops. i live it every day. even if it is not really that cold here in georgia.

Reason is the builders put in the cheaper shower head so after you buy your house you can change it. Mainly the more expensive homes have the shower heads you are used to in Germany.

I went to the Munich Oktoberfest once. Took lots of pictures. Stayed about an hour. Now, I lived in Germany for a couple years, and went to all kinds of fests. There were wine fests, beer fests, asparagus fests, fall fests, Christmas fests (Christmas markets), etc. For me, it was pretty much a case of, if you seen one fest, you've seen 'em all. (But then, I loved medieval castles. I would want to visit every one I saw. But my wife felt the same about castles as I felt about fests. Each to his own.)

This year was my first time going to Oktoberfest. I was there the week of 26 September. It was one of the very best times I have ever had and absolutely intend on going back. It's the largest "keg party" I've ever been to and it was nothing but a great time.

Nice video. After 2 years break I was there 5 times this year. Best moment was the closing night in Bräurosl, tent lit up with sparkles and everybody singing along to Angels from Robbie Williams. One thing that was not covered in the video is Oide Wiesn - really a must for me at least once a year.

Thank You for the Octoberfest video. It reminds me of my time in Germany when I was in the United States Airforce in the early 1990's. Although I did not go to Octoberfest, I enjoyed saxonhausen in Frankfort many nights while I was there. My favorite beer was the hefe veits or the dunkel veits. We also took a tour to Barvaria, we saw the glockenspiel, and visited a church that supposedly had the devils footprint in concrete (it was not what we expected), and we visited Neushwanstein castle it was beautiful. I took many pictures including one from the bridge between the two mountain peaks. I would love to go back someday and take my wife and kids. Again thank you for helping me to relive these memories. I'm sure I've spelled many of these words wrong and to that I apologize.

Haven't fully watched this video yet - in the middle of it. I didn't went to oktoberfest but the one in Stuttgart, i was in Germany for work and was using the public transports every day and notice such a difference when the fair opened. On the other days my group (bunch of portuguese people) were the only ones doing noise (not much, we tried to be respectful) in the train, but during the fair, it was so noisy that it shocked me! I got to see the fun (and some reckless) side of the german people and the fair itself was a good experience - i don't drink beer but it has other drinks in some tends, which was nice for me and the vibe was really nice and surprising.

This video was perfect and 100% accurate. Just did Oktoberfest on Monday September 18 and had a great time! Did all of the major tents and Paulaner was our favorite! Hacker was also great. Great memories to take back to Texas. It is amazing to me that all of those “tents” come down after the fest. They are much more than tents but if you go to Google maps for Oktoberfest Munich, you’ll see a completely empty fairground. Pretty amazing! Really loved the community aspect. Everyone we talked with were so friendly. So much fun singing along (although I am certainly not a singer) to Country Road and Sweet Caroline! Everyone should go at some point in their life! Prost! 🍻😊

I agree with Ben about not really being able to understand the scale, vibe, or what happens until you are there in person. I also went to visit my family in Munich and we went to the Oktoberfest. We went on the first Tuesday it was open and the cloudy weather kept a lot of people away, which was great for us because we could see everything, go on the rides and get food with no lines. But by Wed the sun was out and there was absolutely no room in the tents or even on the walkways outside! I loved it! The street food is the best! The quality is so much better than at any festivals or state fairs I've been to in the US. BTW, if you don't want the alcohol, they did offer a very tasty non-alcoholic beer, in the same glass. 🍺😉 Servus!

I lived in a NYC suburb during my childhood. There was an amusement park called "Playland" (used in scenes for the movie "Big"). In one building they had several rides to test your skills of staying upright, including a teufelrad (with an american name which I have forgtten). That was in the 1940's, but I guess things like that have been scrapped by america's increasingly litigious society.

I only have been on the opening day in 2006. So we got no preparation and no videos to watch about what to expect. Wasn’t a culture shock to me at all; it felt better than large gatherings I experienced in U.S. We left Mainz around 06:00 in the morning and wandering in when they opened. No running, but we did speed walk to find at tent. Tried Paulaner first I loved their beers and Brauhaus, but the line was long and didn’t seem to go anywhere. Some locals told us we might not get by tapping. We decided to go try to find another and we landed a stop in Augustiner. The kegs were tapped at 10:00 and we got our first Mäß just before 10:30. Certainly the drunkest I’ve been before noon! We spent most of the day there. But one thing I noticed in the video that was different was the music. In 2006, it was mostly Volksmusik (Blasmusik) and US 80s music. But I guess there’s a bit of a difference in the mornings over the evenings, even then. The Mainz Oktoberfest had more of a modern band that did some Volksmusik and mostly 80s music. Can’t wait to go back to the Wiesn! Hopefully next year! Oh, and SUPER excited to hear that they have vegan options there now!! I was wasn’t vegan or vegetarian then, but started going down that road in 2009 and vegan since 2014. It’s wonderful to see such a meat centric culture embracing it better than many places in the US still.

I also experience my first Oktoberfest this year as well while living in Munich. The thing I just realized is that my experience at fair and fest grounds in the US is that there is an entrance fee and all the rides and good is an additional charge. We have been to several dults and now Oktoberfest and there is no charge for entrance. It’s fantastic.

This was fun to watch! BTW, having a couple of drinks before going to an event like the Oktoberfest is called "vorglühen" in Germany. It's originally a technical term. Derives from "preheating" a car engine. Very popular among younger people with a smaller budget.

But the most beautiful funfair is still the *_Soester Allerheiligenkirmes_* (Soest All Saints' Funfair): 😘 More fairground attractions than at the Oktoberfest, similar number of visitors per day, ... - and all this _within_ the ancient city walls of the beautiful medieval town of *Soest* (Westphalia). 👉 The biggest (greatest!) old town center funfair in the world! Tip: When the funfair closes (at 02:00 at night) the partying continues in the many cozy pubs! 😁 BTW: This year it starts on November 2nd!

I didn't realize there was so much to do at Oktoberfest! All those places in the beginning of the video makes it look like a huge exhibition! That's nice that people have to share a table at Oktoberfest. Would make it less awkward for someone if they went to the festival alone and wasn't sure how to approach people. That's good that they had vegetarian and vegan food. Normally during mosaic I don't bother going to the food part of the German Club, but if there were vegetarian or vegan options for the food, I'd be more likely to check out the food more often.

Ben, you can find almost all of those big temporary/portable rides, including the roller coasters, at larger fairs in the USA. Especially larger state fairs, such as Texas or Minnesota State Fair, which are the largest. In Kentucky, you'll probably only find those rides at Kentucky Kingdom (which also provides the rides and games for the Kentucky State Fair, a relatively small state fair). In the eastern half of America, in general the farther north you go, the larger the fairs are.
