i just started reading that book by stephen rush. ornette was even ten years ahead of miles imho. one part of the book mentions 'playing the ethos of the composition'. I think that pretty much sums up a lot of it. it took me a while to appreciate ornette, and now i don't think he gets enough credit. i think he's as important as miles or bird or anyone for that matter. and really, though many reacted almost violently to his debut at the five spot in 1959, it's just a natural evolution and reaction to bop. like miles, ornette never backtracked or backed down from his artistic vision.

I ve heard some people say 'There are 3 names in Jazz: Louis, Monk and Ornette. The rest is filling material ' :)))

That part towards the end about Miles and even Coltrane loses focus on what was a useful analysis of Eventually .Let me add 2 things 1) With Lonely Woman, Eventually and Peace, TSOJTC has easily the most important Side A of any record. 2) Ornette on Tenor is from1961. Just listen to the first song to conclude that nothing more advanced has ever been played by anyone. :))

I came to listen to Ornette Coleman after hearing a Pat Metheny interview in which he said he loved listening to Ornette's music when he (Metheny) was growing up in Lee Summit, MO. I went out and got one of Ornette's records and had difficulty in listening to it. I thought to myself "Pat Metheny is either insane or a musical genius." Turns our the latter.

This is just about one track on a classic album, you could do a one hour video about SOJTC, it is worthy of analysis and there is fuck all on KZbin, Stephen Rush's book is good too, some nice transcriptions as well. Ornette was a creative genius and his bands.
