The tune Charlie quotes in his solo is the fiddle tune "Old Joe Clark". Ian Dury was a huge Ornette fan, and he later copped that lick for his big New Wave hit "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll". A few years later, Ornette was playing in London, and Dury approached him and admitted that he had copped the lick. Ornette (or maybe it was Haden) said something like, "That's OK, we copped it from "Old Joe Clark"."

Thanks for doing this. Back in the 60's I listened to Ornette a lot (along with Archie Shepp). "Ramblin'" really swingin', yet tight number! Not as far out as some of Ornette's other stuff.

Definitely. A perfect place to begin listening to Ornette and these great musicians in his group.

I heard Ornette when I was 15 and he blew my mind. I didn’t know wtf was going on. I kept listening and it wade me a lifelong jazz fan. The year before it happened when I first heard muddy waters. There were never things that were heard anywhere that sounded like ornette anmd most white white people really never heard electric blues. This music still sounds fresh but no longer revolutionary.

Amazing stories!! What a trip that must have been. I heard Dave Liebman and Ritchie Beirach duo (live) when I was about 15, and I was NOT READY for that either! Love these experiences!!

Thanks for the Ornette Listen, I had sort of forgotten Billy Higgins was on there - what an amazing player he is just a great model for drummers who might be listening - like myself- few drummers support the band as well as he does- thanks

SO SO SO SUPPORTIVE. Yes, there was "freedom" here in many moments, but man, such incredible listening and support from Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins.

For whatever reason, I think of Ornette more as a tenor player. Always interesting to hear players you associate with one horn playing on another - like hearing Brecker on alto or Bird on tenor. This is a really cool track. Never really listened to him before, but will check out this album. Sounds cool!

Glad you like it! I don't know that Ornette ever played tenor, but that would be cool!

Have you ever analysed Anthony Braxton at all?
@JeffAntoniukEducator10 ай бұрын
You know, I haven't. That is a WHOLE other thing. I could (and would have to) listen and talk about it from the existing set of ears and knowledge that I have, but there would bet WORLDS going on that I'm ignorant of. I have friends and colleagues who have dived into Braxton's music. I'm jealous!
@monsterjazzlicks10 ай бұрын
@@JeffAntoniukEducator - I'm at the point now where I think I can arrange some of Braxton's more accessible pieces in Sibelius for a combo. But I would not have a clue regarding his graphic-score notations!

My ears are getting older....years ago I would have considered this too far outside for my taste. Today, at 70, it sounds like it takes some familiar sounds and arranges them in a interesting, quirky manner. I like it! I must add that most of Ornette's music is ....not what I'm interested in, to put it diplomatically. Thanks for getting me to listen to this, because I wouldn't have sought out Ornette on my own!

Great post David. Yes, amazing how "the time" that something happens in is so important. Stravinsky's Firebird Suite caused a riot in Paris when it was premiered, yet today it sounds like all the music we hear in cool film soundtracks!

I don't care for how Ornette plays but I did enjoy hearing you explain what was going on with the band. I'm impressed with how you are able to sort out what they are doing. Did it take you some time to figure it out ?
@JeffAntoniukEducator Жыл бұрын
I took a LOT of time! I played this with a band years ago, and we really had a lot of discussions (arguments) on what was going on and when. It's fascinating playing from these legends here. Thanks for checking it out!
@davidcox8961 Жыл бұрын
@@JeffAntoniukEducator I bet it did take some time. I'm sure that in the process of learning to play it you had to sort out what was going on.
