I like that their friendship doesn't mean their lives revolve around each other, they can go off and do other things unlike in a lot of shows. Aristotle's idea of friendship is a bit odd, since he ties it to the class-structure of the time (i recall him saying that you have to be equals in rank to be friends because poor people will want stuff from richer ones). I'm unsure if i agree with him that liking someone just because you like them is better than liking them because of some reason, it seems like you've become 'addicted' to them at that point, seems like you'd find it harder to judge if your time is really best spent with them rather than on someone else if you get to that point, but i end up getting 'addicted' to people anyway. TBH i feel like all relationships are really instrumental but we trick ourselves into thinking that we like people in themselves. Leorio definitely risked a lot for Gon when he punched Ging so it does show their friendship has evolved to be important for leorio (and Killua takes risks to restore Gon), but it seems like a silly risk to me. Given how well recieved this anime was, i really hope it gets "finished" one day, but the long gap might mean that never happens =/
@HidinginPublic6 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong here, but Aristotle talks about people needing to be similar 'rank' in terms of virtue, not in class, wealth, or rank like we would think of today. The idea is that people can't continue to align and improve one another, if one person is very strong in virtue, and one is weak. It takes two people of similar virtues to be friends. He uses different examples to illustrate his point, but it all comes down to virtue, not more arbitrary characteristics like looks, or status. For you, all relationships may be instrumental, and that is not bad ( as stated in the video), but it is hardly a trick if you commit yourself to die for another person and follow through, as many have through history. Especially of those people who don't believe in an afterlife. It may seem silly but can actually be an important part of self actualization for most people. I hope it's finished one day as well, it would be nice to finally close the book and have a conclusion. Hopes for the best.
@WorthlessWinner6 жыл бұрын
@@HidinginPublic - I distinctly remembered him talking about differences in wealth for about a paragraph, but when i checked the text he only mentions it once and talks about differences in virtue for the rest of the treatment of "unequal friendships." Scary how you can be confident you remember something, but it turns out it's a fake memory.

Thank you for this excellent analysis. I interpret one point differently. Beginning @4:04 you describe Killua's action at the end of the Hunter Exam Arc as a reaction to the unfair suffering endured by Gon. But if that were true, why would Killua kill Bodero? Hanzo would be the more natural target since he was the one who inflicted the suffering. I see the situation as more of the actions of a shattered heart and soul, after being forced by his brother Illumi to essentially abandon his friendship with Gon.

Great video! I was just thinking of something similar recently. That, the effort we make to make friends and the effort to maintain that relationship is quite hard but I think the reason this video resonates with me is how you talk about the stages of friendship and how you become friends with people in the first place, which, in my own opinion, partially answered my thought.I hope that one day I can put my words out there in a video as well and watching yours continues to light that fire in me to do so. Dope essay man, I really liked the shinji/deku video too. Im interested in seeing more from you, since rn im trying to formulate my own shonen storytelling and taking what i can from the stories before it. What do you think Shonen is wanting/missing rn. I feel as if MHA has taken the role as the next sincere shonen, improving the existing formula to create a better piece, do you feel as if there is room for something similar or perhaps something like Hunter that takes existing concepts and subverts or deconstructs them. I know this is a subjective question and really vague, im just interested to hear what you have to say. Keep up the good werk homie :P

@@AtlasSSBM Read the manga, don't watch the anime. And the reason i like it is how the author utilizes shounen tropes. For all the talk Hunter gets for deconstructing and subverting, by people, i'd argue that it embraces those tropes even more than it subverts, it just plays with them. Trigger is the same for me; i honestly appreciate how it does this better than MHA tbh.
@AtlasSSBM6 жыл бұрын
@@vaginalarthritis1753 Subverting expectations at the right time is a mark of a good writer. Eva and Hunter are considered deconstruction because it replaced the building blocks of shonen/mecca troupes with something that would impact said troupes in the long run (shinji and gon's personalities). Im wondering what would be most refreshing/innovative for the genre as a whole.

Actually kurapika does have a moment like this in the dark continent arc SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY Ill try to keep it breif for any person who decided to read past the warning; While not as dramatic as leorios during the continent arc kurapika thinks to himself and openly acknowledges this fact. He states something along the lines of te fact that for a long time all he wanted we’re to get the eyes and nothing else mattered. That was his drive for living and thats all he had left to fight for. However he admits that he’s found new meaning and things worth fighting for through kurapika, gon and leorio. This is important considering within the dark continent arc kurapika is very close to completing his goals and getting the eyes and is wondering what he’ll do once he collects them all

uhhhhhh, this is an interesting analysis and I think Its really well done… but your unfortunately missing a very large amount of underlying meanings… Komugi and Meruem were friends but Its very implied they were in love without realizing it. Its something many english readers have no idea about but sealed this idea at the end of the arc. Komugi uses an old fashion japanese marriage line acceptance line as her final words to Meruem. “Though I may not be worthy, allow me to join you.” If you wanna see their relationship as platonic thats totally fine too, but This is something a lot of the fandom is clueless to. On the flipside, its fair to view gon&killua as just friends, because obviously they are and the story is about their friendship, but friends can also have feelings for eachother too. Togashi has made their relationship ambiguous on purpose. for a tiny example Why else would Killua be born on Tanabata, a romantic holiday about a girl who weaves for her family and is so good at her job, but she becomes depressed because she can never have a real relationship. her father lets her leave because he loves her but only in a twisted way, because he wants her to come back and work for him. There is an insane amount more to that reference and so much more subtext in the story, I suggest looking into it. Hxh is written in an ambiguous way so people can view these relationships however they choose.

I haven't watched the show or read the manga and while I've only seen a snippet of him on an anime clip I can feel a strong sense of fraternity with the character. Mainly I watched the part where he cuts his arm. Having watched that I had to stop watching as I was overcome with the swelling sensation of wanting all of it, of wanting to know all of it, of wanting to know right now to verify if we're the same. I get those kinda feelings sometimes. I've listen to this video god knows how many times. And I've listen to it a lot more since I began wanting to watch your content in earnest.
