Everyone generates a carbon footprint based on what we do in our daily lives. Alex Jovy has come up with My Tree, an app that teaches people how to offset their carbon footprint and calculates it based on a person's behaviours and the choices they make on a daily basis. He's seeking an investment of £70,000 in exchange for 7% of his company.

The cost of uprooting and moving a mature tree would generate a huge amount of carbon, this guy could be his own best customer if he bought trees to offset his own carbon foot print. Also, if he abandons the land and the trees are individually owned then the landowner could quite possibly pursue the owners for the cost of clearing the land.

He still didn't understand in the end. There is nothing to prove them wrong about. They liked the idea. But they are also investors, so they wanted to understand the business model and see a projection about when they might get their money back. He came in with an app that hasn't launched yet. He had no idea about the market, that is, how many trees people might buy in a year. No investor in their right mind would ever give him money after such a pitch.

@@TheArccore See, that's where this sort of thing needs to be taken by the courts outside the current ltd framework. If you're a director-shareholder of a business which you use to wilfully scam people (and the courts get enough evidence), then you are personally liable for restitution to each victim. Bankruptcy or no bankruptcy. And if ya don't pay - off to debtors' prison.

I would very much like to know what's on the land now, in the picture it looks like grassland. *Here's the thing,* grassland reflects more sunlight than trees, thus lowering Earth's average temperature (or at least not increasing it). Grasslands have a very high biodiversity, forests in the Northern temperate region don't. Grass, like all plants, capture atmospheric carbon. If he's planning on planting trees on grassland he is doing the environment a disservice.

If you buy the land for 200K you have not spent 200K you have aquired assets in the company for 200K. He should however have a timelimit on the trees people buy, so he can do stuff with the land later on, or re-sell

It is an asset but this business idea relys on the trees staying on the land for their entire lifespan. If sold the new owner may get rid of the trees and moving the trees increases the carbon footprint greatly.

Actually, some reports say that tree planting isn't all good. They often destroys the earth where they're planted, and its often foreign trees needing lots of water, like eucalyptus. Carbon is also stored in the ground. When they burn in fires, which trees often do, the carbon is let out in the atmosphere, while the ground still store it.

What a rubbish idea. I'm bored with carbon credits. The global system being implemented between countries means carbon credits can be 'transferred' between nations, so for example let's say that China pollute the atmosphere more than their allocated credit allows, then China simply go and buy credits from a small nation who's carbon footprint is relatively small and have plenty of spare credit to sell on.

Perhaps I’m naive, but this seems a bit rubbish. The guy fairly well explained how he could turn a $400k profit per orchard. The dragons have been MUCH more approachable to presentations MUCH less viable quite often. People come to the den and part with high equity for expertise rather than going to a bank for a loan. I’m sure, of the 5 of them, at least one could have been a bit more helpful in projections. Essentially what they did was bark at him for being honest enough to state it’s pre-revenue and he doesn’t have a crystal ball of the future earnings. How is he supposed to do a thorough and reliable market analysis when he’s the first and only one? Of course it would be speculative and then I’m sure they would have dogged on him for pulling numbers out of the sky. Perhaps it was lost in editing, but also perhaps the dragons were ready for lunch.

Peter was incorrect, there is also value in the app and the tech behind it, that has to be factored into the valuation too. I actually think this was a case where maybe Peter and Deborah could have offered something like 200k each for the entire business. This guy had a great idea but was not knowledgeable enough to run it... With the backbone in place, they could have reset the revenue model to make it more profitable and it would have looked great on their personal portfolios.

But there’s no barrier to entry if anyone else wanted to build the exact same business and already owned land, plus I’d guess that acquiring customers could end up being a lot more expensive than the entrepreneur thinks. You’d have to employ a sales team for a start, an app alone won’t automatically sell something which wouldn’t be on most people’s radar
