An Approach to Female Infertility

A quick point of clarification on terminology: In this video, I predominantly use the word, female, and on a few occasions, woman, to refer to an individual with a uterus and ovaries who desires to become pregnant. I acknowledge that not all such individuals identify as a woman, and I mean no disrespect towards those who are transgender or gender non-conforming. Update: ovulation induction with Letrozole is now preferred over clomiphene. Less chances of multiple pregnancy and more of live births with the former.

The topic was inspired by a clinical reasoning session I was tasked with teaching to 2nd year students in which I erroneously said that fibroids were a significant cause of infertility. I realized I needed to brush up on the topic. After doing so, with it still fresh in my mind, I decided it was a good time to make a video about it!

Thanks for the comment and suggestion! From the beginning, I've always focused my videos on clinical scenarios and testing with which I have the most familiarity. This way, I can allow my clinical experience to influence how information is organized and presented, rather than me just reciting facts from a reference. Unfortunately, the only time I spend in an ER these days is when my admitted patient is boarding there due to a lack of beds on the medicine ward upstairs. In other words, I don't have sufficient expertise to speak authoritatively on many emergency medicine topics, beyond those that are also relevant on the IM wards (e.g. arrhythmias, shock, respiratory failure, chest pain, CXRs, ABGs).

Are there specific terms whose absence surprised you? As a US physician, the terms I use in my videos are generally the same ones that are used in our wards and clinics, and the same terms that would be typical for one of my trainees to use when discussing patients among peers/colleagues.

Wow thanks, no matter if you’re 40 or whatever, after reading Dobbie Nerkstrol's guide, I ended up pleasantly surprised. Within 60 days anyone can get pregnant, feeling the changes in your body the first few weeks. After go’ogling her I understood it's not a miracle kind of thing like the title suggests, but you can bet you'll boost your chances.
