Awesome watch guys from here in New Zealand. I was born in NZ but went to Dundee (Wormit to be precise) as my Dad (Dundee born and bred) was in the merchant navy. Lived there until I was 5yo and returned to NZ where I have remained. 50 years on (this year) and I still haven't been back to Dundee 😞. It is my desire to travel back and find the graves of my grandparents and pay my respects. It is amazing from videos from Steve how many things remain vivid in my memory from when I was so young. The emotional attachment remains so strong. In the above video @2:05 I remembered exactly the building (recalled a tall glass facade) where Boots is where I used to get a wee Matchbox car when we went there like it was yesterday - probably been refurbished and modernised since then). Keep up the great work. I loved how organic and naturally flowing the video was too. Just for reference my grandparents lived in a wee village called Rait, then Monifieth, then Broughty Ferry until they passed. I'll need to check out some of the latter's pubs too when I get back....

Hi Steve, I absolutely loved this video! It was a real memory trip for me. I went to the University of Dundee in the early 90s and visited the Phoenix a lot. It’s just as I remember it. I had a friend who lived in Broughty Ferry and like you too I preferred going out there with him on a Saturday night. I had many brilliant evenings in the Ship, the Fisherman’s, and I think the Anchor. Sometimes we’d end up in Buddies night club which was always an experience! I’m going back there in August on a nostalgia trip and can’t wait.

A great authentic video Steve. You were both beginning to slever away like poachers' dugs towards the end ! I have a confession to make, although I do not come from anywhere near Dundee I have visited all the pubs on your list, apart from The Tinsmith and Gunners. The Ferry is a nice wee place and The Royal Anchor just shades it from The Ship Inn. In Dundee, Phoenix Bar just shades it from The Speedwell and The Pillars. I like them all - without wishing to be compared to over-indulgent day trippers from Montrose !! The reason I am so well acquainted with the pubs so far from my home (the Glasgow area) is that I have been researching my mother's side of the family who came from Dundee and Kirkton of Auchterhouse (the family name was Fenwick). I do remember finding somewhere in my researches that Phoenix Bar got its name from the very first owner, who was also a Dundee wine merchant, called Peter Fenwick .... it was Fenwicks !!! Anyway, I couldn't find a link to him and my mother's family. Without bias, however, I would say that the overall winner was Phoenix Bar.

@Grangeburn ....my mothers side are from near kirkton of auchterhouse and a place called PITEMPTON (strathmartine/craigmill) .....many delaminated gravestones still survive in local cemetery at Craigmill....think some stones go back to 1700 or before ....before then from kettins/blairgowrie,cortachy and before then edinburgh.........current family still in same area hundreds of years later - we hate moving house :))

I found my great-grandfather's family gravestone in the graveyard of the Kirk in Kirkton of Auchterhouse. David Fenwick was his name and he was the village blacksmith. We are talking roughly around the years 1860 - 1890. His son Alexander married an Elizabeth Noonan from Dundee. My grandpa and grandma were shunned by both sides of the family as he was Kirk and she was Catholic. She gave birth to their son before being married in the Kirk at Logie? in Dundee. The Fenwicks are scattered all over the world, as are the Noonans. @@geoffdundee

Fenwicks Blacksmith were at - 2 Fairfield Street Dundee. newspaper article from 2015.. A leading Dundee blacksmiths has gone into provisional liquidation with the loss of 14 jobs. Fenwick Blacksmiths was founded in 1904 and had an annual turnover of about £800,000, but was hit hard when fellow city firm and key customer Muirfield Contracts went into administration. The business has closed with immediate effect, with all 14 staff let go. The firm's assets, including property, vehicles and machinery, will now be sold off. Liquidator Tom MacLennan, of FRP Advisory, said: "Fenwick Blacksmiths was a highly regarded specialist blacksmith business with a good customer base. The administration of Muirfield Contracts meant that the company was unable to continue trading. "This is a difficult time for the staff and we will provide as much support to them as possible."

Nice video, but a little unfair on the Dundee pubs - expecting an atmosphere on a Monday morning. I was in Mennie's (The Speedwell) the day after you - as the painting had just been finished. It's the best trad bar by far - cask ales, best whisky collection I've seen in a city cente bar for years, no music. Funnily enough I got talking to a Spanish (or Portugese) guy next to me at the bar who was a beer afficianado, and he said he often travelled into Dundee from Broughty Ferry (where he lived), just to have a beer in Mennie's. Mennie was the name of the German lady who ran the bar in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Spent nearly 4yrs in Dundee leaving in 2002, still don't think I managed all the pubs, was too busy working in Flares nightclub myself.. A fantastic wee city that I still miss to this day..

The lemmings game was born in Dundee. 2 of my cousins were in the team who created it!

Great video. Dundee was my stomping ground in the late 70s/80s so it was great to see so many of my old haunts.

Great effort by the two of you, nice to see around some of the more traditional pubs over the water! The Tinsmith was a real surprise, musg give it a try👍

Fun day! I don't drink alcohol, but would love to visit a few of the pubs, and honestly, a drink can be soda, right?!

You know I searched your channel for 'Falkirk', but was surprised to not find a video. Any plans to visit Falkirk and the Kelpies?
@steve-marsh10 ай бұрын
I have it penciled in to do a walk between them both. I'm glad to still have plenty options for the channel :) I certainly walked through Falkirk on my 'attempted' walk from Edinburgh to Glasgow video

Excellent. Remember to check out Falkirks oldest pub(The WheatSheaf 1797), for a nice hand pulled pint.@@steve-marsh

I'm impressed. In my younger days (in 1969) I arranged with a friend that we would walk from the suberbs of Copenhagen, where we lived, to the Town Hall Square in Copenhagen and stop at every bar on the way and have one beer. A tour of less than 20 kilometers. We did'nt recon there would be so many places, so it would be an easy task to do and youh'd probably get sober on the way walking to the next stop. In the beginning, there were some distance between the bars, so it went off quite well. But after a while the bars got more frequent and on around the 10 kilometer mark we were unable to walk or stand, so the project were cancelled. But we had a fun day 😀
