Great vid, Keith. Classic Hopeus! What a superb find, mate. Some other nice ones there too. That ‘fake’ penny was interesting. Looked like it had been coated with silver on one side. Maybe it was used for sleight of hand tricks etc. I once found a ‘penny’ with George 6th on one side and Edward on the other. It was two pennies filed thin and soldered together, and was in the rotten remains of some old garment that was just about recognisable as trousers, having been buried for decades. I always imagined the ‘coin’ was used for gambling/ cheating, or some sleight of hand trickery. It’s amazing what we dig up.

The penny is base metal clad in copper and I was surprised to learn that copper coins were still being counterfeited through the Victorian era and into the Edwardian era... how on earth was it financially viable to do that with all the work involved in making them! @@HOPEUSMAXIMUS yes mate, a couple of boats full of Norwegians. The Reeve of the shire rode out from Dorch with some of his met to meet them, thinking they were traders. But they were attacked by them and chopped up. They then went ransacking before sailing off into the sunset!! Did you know the Norse word for house was Rann? It’s where we get the word ransack from. It means to search a house! 👍🏼

I'm quite surprised hear that copper coins were still being forged in Britain in the time of Edward VII. In Canada blacksmiths quite commonly forged British copper coins in the time of George III, when only very worn real ones were in circulation. I have one, dated 1807(?), but it's genuine.

I was very surprised when I unearthed the young Victoria penny forgery. There are references online mentioning them and I'm amazed that considerable time and effort went into producing low value copper coin forgeries just to save tiny amounts of copper. I've since found out that the rough sand shiny crystalline core appears to be that of zinc alloy which has a low melting point. ATB Keith.

You may not thank me for telling you this, but sceat is properly pronounced 'shat', not 'skeet'.

Hi William, yes I'm sure your right, I've heard a few variations of how it is pronounced and I know of FLO's (Finds Liaison Officers), (who are required to have a degree in archaeology or a related discipline) have pronounced the coin as 'skeet', 'seed' and 'shat'.
