Good advice. Basically what Bradbury said, “Just barf it out then fix it later.” He just didn’t say other well repeated advice, “Edit, re-edit, re-re-edit then do it again.”

Thanks for that! Bradbury was a genius level writer, if you ask me.

Thanks Datta, I remember you said this before, and totally related. Working on my first fiction book and it's exactly how it's being crafted. I like that word better than editing. It allows the writing to evolve and makes space for my own learning curve in the process. Great distinction at the end, knowing when the layering phase is over.

Thanks Joy. I like the word crafting, too.

I love this approach because sometimes I get so bogged down in a big project like a book. I love the idea or layers. Brilliant!

This is what I do. My first book I did what you described not to do. It was tune consuming and I wasted a lot of time. Prose and dialogue comes last. Parts can be placeholders. Just go over it again and again. It will get refined. It just takes work. Great advice! It works.

Thanks for that. Obviously, I agree with you, and admire that you are willing to do the work. A lot of that work is course correction, if you ask me. I put out a new video (on character arcs) today, and I'd love to know what you think: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZulc61rjNuIhtk

I used to write a lot but all useless stuff. I think we need more videos like this to give more ideas to be more productive. Thanks for the upload. Great stuff. Take care and stay Blessed 🙂

I did try to get my first chapters in a certain quality stage, but it was in the fist place to prove to myself to be able to acquire a trust in myself I can do write a book of a considerate length and that I get to know where I'm good at and worse. But now I can leave that consideration behind, so I follow your advice and try to get to the finish of my book on a certain level before continuing in the beginning. Also great tip to not yet let beta-readers read it, since indeed, there are still some changes I need to do in the beginning that should be exciting for the readers.

Sounds good! Beta readers can be helpful, but it's always best to make as much progress as possible before sharing it with them. That said, most of the time I will have one or two early beta readers (alpha readers?) to get an idea of the basic direction and plot ideas to see if they work. Just remember, that you can only use a beta reader once per book.

In Russia we have a proverb for this thing: Do not see the forest because of trees. Helpful, thank you.

When I was writing my dissertation, I called it "threading thru" or "detangling" each time I rewrote.

There is a flip side of this coin. With approach of layring you will become so tired of you novel that you rather not to see it at all.

That can be a problem. My approach is to make it interesting enough to me that I enjoy it each time through.
