When I was in the 1st grade I recall planting a couple of pinto beans in one of the cafeteria 1 cup milk container and learning how to start it's growth and maintaining it. This should be one of the first lesson's taught to a child.

My Jambalaya Okra germinated in TWO DAYS! I had them in a 162 cell tray, with my new HOSS Heat mat under them turned up to 90*F. At four days they are already 2 INCHES TALL! The Jambalaya was very productive last year, and started producing at about 18” tall. Good stuff fo sho. 😎

We can't get an okra harvest soon enough, so we start seeds for transplants. I've soaked my seeds before starting them. I didn't notice them germinating any sooner. Heating mat works great.

Last yr. was the 1st year I planted Okra. I GOT ALOT and I had no idea what I was doing! At first, I picked too late and could not eat any of it. But after someone on U-TUBE told me not to eat those giant Okra, I paid more attention to the size, so I could eat what I was growing! I loved the process. This year I too will be planting Crimson and my seeds pods are almost ready to plant in my container. Will let you know the results. Again, I love your shows, especially on Thursday night. Always good information, and it seems I always pick up a little something new, too! This will be my first year growing in this location, and my first year growing pumpkins of any sort. I just didn't have enough room back in the suburbs! This year in Zone 8b, I'll be following y'all pretty close. It still seems weird to be starting things so late, as we're about 2 weeks to a month behind Zone 9b, but I'll have to say it's giving more time to get going. With still unpacking from the move (Does it ever end?!!!), and getting situated in a new place, I certainly need the extra time!

I think another good perk of using perlite is that it makes it easier to see any little green sprouts! The green color would pop against all that white.

Travis I have grown the Jing okra for two years now. I really like it and will continue growing it. It stays tender longer than other types and you can see the pods much easier. I also tried Burgandy last year and liked it too. I thought starting okra in trays was crazy until I tried it after your suggestion. I got much better germination than in direct sowing. It's just so hard to wait for the soil to get warm enough for okra. I always jumped the gun and tried to plant in the ground too early. I'm trying Jumbalyia for the first time this year. Got it from you. I'll let you know how that goes if I can wait long enough for warm weather. I'm a month behind you in planting.

Hi Travis, I'm trying the vine borrer bait trap this year since I'm growing the Al winter squash. I've never tried this trap before so I hope it'll work. Stepped up my Red Snapper, Celebrity, and Tatchi tomatoes today, I also installed my drip irrigation kits too! It only took a short time to put everything together, and works great! I am so happy. Last year I direct seeded 4 Okra and they caught up and grew 4x as big as the 4 eight week transplants and out performed them. The transplants were store bought so that could of made the difference. This year I will I will start my own transplants and and direct seed and see.

Hi Travis I have a question how long do you think the average time it takes the jambalaya okree to germinate. I am really impressed I got the seeds on Monday may 17 and today is the 19 and I have 4 out of the 9 I started all ready germinated I do have them on a heat mat and I live in Kansas in the far north end of zone 6b

The Average time for germination on those is 7 days. Sound like your got a head start at only 2 days!! That's AWESOME!

There are lots of things im always told I can't grow. I'm not going to dispute that C. moschata are _more_ resistant to vine borer, but me and my neighbors lost all of our Butternut to vine borer last year (as well as all the rest of my cucurbits, with the exception of cucumbers and cantaloupe).

Still trying to understand the cross pollination on winter squash. If you aren't seed saving and just growing for the current crops, does it matter if they cross pollinate or does it change the fruit you grow that year. What about other crops like beans etc. Thanks!

I know you have your trays on mats , I'm wanting to move my mats and try germinating some stuff in my unheated tunnel but our days are 60 degrees and sunny but nights are in 30's you think the mats are enough heat to keep them alive at night? Maybe covering them with plastic at night also?

Nights in the 30s is a little dicey. We use a little portable heater in our greenhouse when the nights get in the 30s down here.

They usually take about 4-5 weeks to be ready to transplant. So if your last frost will be gone by then, go for it.

We noticed that all the commercial greenhouse growers around here use it, and we gave it a try. And really like it so we have continued to use it. It's not 100% necessary, but works great if you can get your hands on some.

From our experiences, there's not a whole lot you can grow in there when it gets hot. Shade cloth would help. I think that's a great size to have for seed starting.

My research and experience says that in order for a pepo type of pumpkin to get pollinated, it has to be from a pepo type. So in other words, a maxima type cannot pollinate a pepo nor can any other type. Maxima to Maxima, Pepo to Pepo etc.

Correct. So as long as you don't grow two C. pepo species near one another, no worries of cross-pollination.
