I like the old-school crookneck squash, but this year I am going with Goldprize and Sunburst. Still too early for us in Central Kentucky. I usually plant these warm season crops the week of the Kentucky Derby (first Saturday in May). I am also trying max pack and stonewall cucumbers. I usually grow national pickling cucumbers. I had good luck with calypso last year.

We’ve got that nasty storm comin in on the 17 th ( Panama City)and I sure hope I don’t lose all those tender plants! I have all my starts ready to put out the day after. This year I'm doing Slick Pik yellow squash and Sunburst from your seed and Dixie Hybrid and Summerpac. I'm trying Expedition for the first time like you and National Pickling cucumbers from your seed. I also planted Pick a Bushel again. I planted it last year and didn't notice it was gynoecious and only planted four plants as a test. Got lucky and got a male plant in the mix. It performed well. I'm doing mine as transplants, but I'll also direct seed in another month when it's ready here in 7B NC. We have three nights coming up that will be in the 30's that is worrying me. Not freezing, but they keep dropping the forecasted temps lower with each passing day. My dog started howling while I was watching your video. Seems like it was about 7:30 mins in. ;-)

I am starting every single thing indoors this year except green beans. I have about 350 sweet corn started indoors too. Transplanting sweet corn let’s you plant them deep, real deep and you can hill them. They don’t blow over then.

One of my spots used to have a good bit of roots. You can take an axe and try to get rid of some of them. But I had to let some just naturally break down. Gets better every year, but I still hit one every now and then.

Our greenhouse is usually full this time of year, and we have pretty good success direct-seeding them. Many folks (including all the commercial growers around here) do in fact transplant them as you suggested.

I love your channel. However, I do not love the 'random pollinator seeds' thing. It's good for people with a lot of space, but I am only planting 2 cucumber plants per variety.... However I'm growing like 10 varieties. So I ALWAYS only plant like 2-3 of cucumber seeds. And I succession plant them similar as you due to the disease pressure here in central GA 8a/8b line. :) Again love your channel and I love the bits of biology and genetics. I see the simplicity of having the pollinators mixed in though. Because it's very simple when you plant in rows like farmers do with even small plots of LAND.

Have never planted by the almanac. It's always a couple weeks late in my opinion. We like to take chances and try to plant as early as we can.

Thanks as always for another great video. Question... is your drip system being run off city water or well water! Or does it matter? Here in Florida I have a shallow well (50’ or thereabouts) for irrigation purposes which off puts that distinct sulphur smell and has enough iron in it to turn a white fence orange/rust over the course of a year or so. I wonder what effect that may have on a vegetable garden, if any. Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom.

Well water here. I'm not sure how the sulphur and iron would affect the garden long-term. If you have a way to filter the water at the source, that might not be a bad idea.

I know that I could drill the well another 50 or so feet for clearer (less sulphur and iron) but that’s a bit overkill for a lawn irrigation system. I will look at a filter system between the spiciest and automated drip system though. Hummm.... might your products contain that very thing? Just a thought! Thanks for the suggestion.

Our drip system does contain a fine filter to catch hard minerals, but not sure it would pull the sulphur and iron out the water.

They'll go away now that we're spending more time in the garden. They don't like disturbance. Once we start cutting the grass again, they'll move to the woods.

I have issues with powdery mildew on my squash, zucchini and cucumbers every season. I plant some in the raised beds and some in pots. You mention succession planting and my question to you is; mildew is air and soil borne so once it’s in around my property will it not attack the next crop of them? Do you spray the areas with anything organic to try and get rid of the lingering spores? I’m so tired of losing my crops to mildew and throwing out and wasting so much soil from my potted plants Thankyou

We have several mildew-resistant varieties on our site that can tolerate it better than others. At some point later in the life of the squash plant, they'll all get it. That's why we pull the plants when they get it bad and plant more. They can fight it off pretty well when they're young and growing. You can also spray Liquid Copper (hosstools.com/product/liquid-copper-fungicide/) which helps.

Probably like any other slicing variety. If you don't care for the seeds, go for one of our burpless varieties.

I'm in zone 9b, central California, and planning to grow Beit Alpha cucumbers. We have drought conditions and get over 100 degrees in the summer. What kind of timing do you recommend for succession sowing?

We're usually done with all cucumbers and squash by the end of July when we start getting close to 100 degrees. But we can usually get three crops before then, planting a new row every month or so.

Just plant a few seeds of a standard slicing variety like Marketmore. Max Pack is not gynoecious, so it won't need the pollenator variety like the other two.

What if you get ants in your garden bed? Do you leave them? I’m not sure if this is true but I heard that they feed off of seeds. I have some ants issue in some of my areas (and they are me up) and was wondering if I should get rid of them? I have a mixture of 1 part borax and 1 part sugar and add a little bit of water to make a paste. It works sometimes

Ants don't like disturbance. So a little regular, light cultivation once a week will usually make them move elsewhere.

I have not heard that. I guess the only way to see would be to plant a standard variety next to a parthenocarpic one.
