Ian Hislop has been editor of Private Eye since 1986 and is probably best known for his role on the BBC show Have I Got News for You. His guests on the night are award winning political cartoonist and graphic novelist Henny Beaumont, actor and impressionist Jan Ravens (Spitting Image, Dead Ringers), and British Library curator Tamara Tubb. Sorry I missed this exhibition. Of course I’m in Montreal and there’s a bit of water in the way… But I will visit the Library next time I’m in London. I’m fascinated by the subject of satire. Years back I saw a very interesting exhibition in Paris on the history of Le Canard Enchaîné, France’s equivalent to Private Eye. Let’s hope there’ll be an exhibition about the Eye again soon. I greatly admire Ian Hislop. Even more so because he’s a train nut like me too. Greetings from Canada! 🍁

1:09:25 Americans are more interested in visual clowning/slapstick than satire which occurs mostly in your head and requires a minimum information level about the subject being satirised. I think John Cleese has made this point.
@darkZarchon
@darkZarchon Жыл бұрын
I think the minimum information level really is the key. The US is so big that a political scandal or news event of less than the absolute most importance can go basically unnoticed by not just one person, but everyone that person knows as well. If none of your friends know or care about a particular story happening two or three time zones away, are you really going to be sharing satire about it?

Despite being an American, I am constantly asking myself why we have no sense of humor. I think it stems from taking ourselves too seriously - or simply seriously. SNL is really more slapstick than satire. Carlin was great, but his delivery could be a problem. Smothers Brothers: we know what happened to them. I think this was a good talk, if a bit uneven. Cannot tell if calling Zelensky the most admired leader was being satirical … I hope so. Thank you.

While this is a year old comment, since nobody has replied... I think it is largely down to the nature of US society as a largely immigrant population, with varying levels of English. England was extremely homogenous up until the 60s, and though it is much more multicultural nowadays, there is still a core britishness and the vast majority have a native level of English which lends itself to more complex humour. Of course, there is plenty of intelligent US humour and british toilet-humour. One of the most popular shows in the UK is Mrs. Brown's Boys, which is absolutely abysmal stage Oirish (I'm Irish , by the way). Also, popular comedy in Spain, Italy and Germany is absolutely juvenile crap for the most part. I can't speak for the comedy in other countries than those.

The US is far more litigious and touchy these days than the UK. That's why we have no biting satire.
@jeffreyumeh8580
@jeffreyumeh8580 Жыл бұрын
Eh like yeh you can take it to far and if you are doing it simply to keep up appearances pleas don't, but earnestly being sympathetic enough to truly be angry on someone else's behalf is not a bad thing. For example I am angry that the US doesn't have a universal healthcare system when it would cost less and get better result, now that is more an economic rather than soical concern, but it doesn't actually effect me, but to think that 300 million people are suffering to benefit a very few when it has been shown time after time that a univeral healthcare system can be cost effective and generally just effective doesn't really make me angry as much as it just annoys me. To be fair though the thing I think you are criticizing most is people getting offended by jokes, which I like to believe I have a tolerance as wide as the ocean for as long as it's not intended to be hurtful or malicious. Love South Park for example because they take the piss out of everyone, nobody is singled out and being able to laugh at yourself or even just laugh at the caricature of yourself while everyone else is getting ripped on is a virtue.

these are very good panellists, but they are bit of 'the old guard' who have views of American satire from maybe how it was over 10 years ago, also seemed to be a older generation in the audience too, who perhaps don't watch the American late night shows or recognise that a lot of people in Britain watch American comedy, that guy talking about the American office doesn't have a clue how it's loved here, and there was no mention of things like Seth Meyers Closer Look, the success of John Oliver over there, Jon Stewart etc, finished now, but VEEP did well too, they really don't hold back, they aren't tame towards the American government and companies. There is actually more topical comedy shows in America than there is here in the UK, and most air 4 episodes a week, year round (usually a 3 weeks one, 1 off schedule) we get what 20 episodes of Have I got News for you a year, that is now the ONLY pure topical comedy show on a main channel. (an argument could be made to include The Last Leg too, but even that only aired about 20 episodes too ) some more stuff on radio, but still not huge numbers. We simply don't do enough to be feeling high and mighty towards the Americans, when since this happened, topical shows got pulled when The Queen died, out of respect... I don't want my satirists to respectful of the powerful, they get a pass to make the points and jokes, during the nations mass hysteria, I got the best satire about it all from American late night shows. Ian Hislop should have been embarrassed his show got pulled, not just from airing when it was scheduled, but from even being made!

TV should have more diversity & outlet of different views, but i would still think that all TV shows live & die, ultimately, by their viewing figures. Obviously comedy is subjective, but i didnt find The Mash Report very funny, nor do i find Nish Kumar funny. I guess this is a problem (modern??) whereby shows that may have smaller viewing figures but are really enjoyed by that fanbase, dont get the chance to continue due to the fact that viewing figures may not be big enough. Was this different in the past with fewer channels where TV shows were given more of a chance because of the audiences lack of choice. In regards to this video, it unfortunately felt very stilted, with no one except Ian & Jan seemingly willing to contribute to the discussion. The first drawing of the tractor was just painful with no one saying anything.

Being offended on someone elses behalf, such as when you object to the bigoted abuse of a transgender person, is called empathy. The opening diatribe of this comedian is typical of individuals who don't feel or understand such things as empathy, compassion, kindness or things such as shame or remorse. In other words they are the words of a sociopath.
