This is the best quality reproduction of this TV show to date. No other film star of the 30s crowned the end of his career in a comparable way. Marlene Dietrich condenses her career, her 50 years of experience in a unique work of art. Everything comes together here: origin, self-irony, sentimental world pain and political conviction. Fascinating how Marlene Dietrich had maintained her hypnotic charisma over the decades.

I remember watching this show on American television in the fall of 1972. There was only one Dietrich. Ernest Hemingway referred to her as “The Big Kraut.” Her signature song will always be “Falling in love again” from “The Blue Angel.” Yes, her voice had very limited range, and she was not really a very good singer. Still, she knew how to use her limited talents to a maximum effect. She created a persona of sexual allure that was unmatched among her peers. Here at 70, she maintained the seductiveness of a 25 year old. Nobody could sing a song in German like Dietrich. This 1972 show from London is priceless. It’s so wonderful to be able to watch it again after these many, many, years. Nobody can replace Dietrich. Nobody.

She was hitting all the right notes just not necessarily in the right order. She had great self belief in her talent, definitely more than what others saw in her. Her image was amazing though and when that had faded she retreated to the shadows so it would never fade from the public. Now that’s a star ⭐️ x

If you listen to the studio recordings she made in the late 1950s and 1960s, her singing was noticeably more accurate and on pitch than in the 1970s. By 1975, she sounded like a tipsy old lady way too much of the time, often slurring her words in addition to being quite off pitch. Her daughter and a couple of other biographers attribute this to alcohol consumption, which increased as time went on. As she moved into her 70s, performing also became physically harder--- her legs were deteriorating badly, and she took several bad falls. The third one ended her career in September 1975, and with the death of her husband in 1976, Dietrich was unable to summon the will power to return to concerts. In 1979, after other falls at home, she became bedridden for the remaining 13 years of her life, and never appeared in public again. She was in pretty good shape here (this video was filmed in late 1972, shortly before her 71st birthday), although she's not as spirited and relaxed as she had been even in her Broadway shows in 1967 and 1968. She was frustrated at the filming conditions, and she wasn't accustomed to television. She knew that she wasn't at her best and she blamed producer Alexander Cohen, who later sued her for defamation.

I don't know if it's that she can't singa note ut she has a very low range in her boice, interesting that she still ket on singing. Still there was something about her vice, the emotional delivery, no one could sing Lili Marlene like her.

She took this show on the road across America as well as Europe. I saw her do it at a venue in suburban Chicago. I cannot think of any other performer I have seen [I am 75 and saw my first Broadway show when I was six] who was as good at creating an illusion with just her voice and lighting.

With Dietrich it concluded (thus was 1976), with this concert. I knew of her from TV reruns 📺 movies, "witness for the prosecution", in particular. Her face, the name Marlene. Of all actresses, along with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, she's the most intriguing person who was disciplined and emotionally connected in her performance tiwards the audience. What a treat to finally see the legendary Dietrich stunningly performance, i seen a VHS back in 1993, however not merely as clear version as of this gem 💎🎶. 🎉
